Alternative to Facebook?
Is there any alternative to Facebook in which you don't agree to a slave contract?
|
Facebook has major issues, I can't believe people don't see this but for whatever reason people insist on using it.
I've heard a lot of people talk down on Myspace but not one person has offerend a legitimate technical reason "why" Facebook is "better" than Myspace. I think the only thing better than both of them is livejournal, for it's privacy reasons (the custom filters are quite powerful) |
I'm not sure I see how "slave contract" = rights to your pictures and writing on their website, but OK.
Google has a decent social networking tool called Orkut - it uses a Gmail account if you have one. |
I don't have anything particularly personal posted on there, but I do have a lot of pictures... I wonder if I should remove them, or is the damage already done? And what are alternatives for sharing mass amounts of photos with lots of people, without having to send out some kind of notice/e-mail/password?

TFP. Duh.

Facebook is a government machine..
personally I like the local pub better.. but then I'm not much for artificial interaction (with the exception being here of course) |
Facebook was destroyed with the stupid application framework they launched. You can't go to the average person's facebook now without having to wade through an eFleaMarket of trash to see the actual page. Zombie bites, Vampires, poker, personality quizzes, stupid presents, constant BS one every page you go to. The only (and I truly mean only) reason I keep my facebook is so I can see how friends are doing. Even though now it's hard to even see that because every single update is some idiotic application update. I swear facebook is now like the early days of the Internet before anti-adware programs had launched. Spam, spam, spam.
It pains me to say this but I have to: MySpace is better than Facebook. Ask me that a year or 2 years ago and I would have laughed at that answer. But MySpace really is better now. |
Myspace recently added app support ala facebook so it may soon be on the shitlist too.
hopefully people realize this is why facebook sucks and dont go overboard with it. |

Facebook recently allowed you to block applications, which saved it for me.

I meant blocking application invitations. Whenever you get one now, there is a link with "Block This Application" next to it. Yes Virginia, you never have to delete an invitation to be a vampire again.
You can also collapse applications on people's profiles. For example, sick of seeing the "Top Friends" application? Click on the bar and it collapses. Best of all, it collapses on ALL your friends' pages when you view them. Hurrah! |
ugh.... IMO they are not better than yahoo pages, geocities, aol towns, and all those other "I got a webpage and look at how many crappy things I can tag onto it."
i got not alternative |
I am getting to the point that is "Fuck social networking!"
I have gone the route that is business cards. My school starts printing students' business cards with their name, school email, and degrees (to be completed). Much more effective than "Jenny poked Ally" or something like that. "Go Away! Who invited you anyways, Facebook?" "Mysapce." "Who wants to be my friend!" |

buhaha yeah, pretty much why I don't tell anyone that I'm here either. it's definitively candid conversation, some of my opinions and forums I participate in here just seem kind of like it'd weird out the more conservative types I run in to. (read: sexually repressed nutjobs) |

Perhaps this thread should go hand in hand with the alternate personality thread. |

I've shared this forum with 1 friend who originally taught me the meaning of "kinky" (not personally, but through my observation of her lifestyle and listening to her stories). I think the whole thing was probably fairly tame for her level, so I doubt she checked it out again. |
There needs to be an application kill-switch. Like check yes or no. If you check yes, every app on your page and anyone else's is invisible to you so all you see is their oldschool facebook page. If you choose no then you get the new bloatware version that can only be triumphed by going to the local fleamarket on a saturday morning looking for a nice used leather jacket with only $3 to spend.

I'm a big of of blocking ALL application invites from some people... there are two people in particular who send me EVERY SINGLE invitation, so when this option came along (to block any and all future application invites from them), I took advantage of it immediately. Haven't had any invitations since then. :D
