usb/internet/wireless problems! HALP
no fixes yet. i'm cp'ing this from another forum. so i apologize for the splintered/awkwardness of it.
o yea, lemme describe my situation. My computer -> piece of shit usb wireless dealy -> router every once in a while/all the time, my internet either stops working or i cannot connect to it. i do some fiddling, go to control panel. the wireless connection is x'd out. i do some uninstall/reinstalls/unplug/enable/disable etc etc in device manager/network properties, but nothing. when i 'disable' it just disappears, and i cannot re-enable it with out restarting (and then it's still x'd out) when i run the device manager to attempt to see what's up, it gives me the yellow Exclamation, indicating that that hardware is not working properly. i click on it and it says "this device cannot start" (this is after 'disabling') when i just use device manager normally, it tells me everything is running fine, but it just will not connect to my router, even though it sees it from network properties. last night it was working fine, and then i plugged my camera in to the other usb. intarnets stopped. camera would not read. nothing, nada. no new found hardware etc etc. after some fiddling i got the camera to work, no internet. reset, stopped using camera, internet works. now, i've booted in safe mode w/ networking. internet works like a charm. my mouse does not (wireless) i go to device manager to install my mouse, and again, it gives me the yellow exclamation and tells me "device cannot start" wtf. i hadn't had any problems with have 2-4 things plugged in (2 in back, 2 in front) in the past. so now my mouse works in safe mode. wtf? i thought it would be gravy running in safe mode, but i uploaded 2 things and my connections just veronica moser'd all over my face. FUCK it's not working (i'm in safe mode, so it probably won't work for much longer) my roommates are using the internet. earlier today, no one was home and i had ZERO problems. this is shit. both our service AND our router are supposed to support multiple users. why is it that my computer, and no one else's can not use the internet when anyone else is? i checked various irqs and stuff, no conflict. it seems like i just can't 'get to' the shit cuz it's being hoarded or something but there has NEVER been a problem in the past. this has only been going on about ~1 month. A few questions.
Is this a laptop, or a desktop? Everything you are connecting to the PC (mouse, keyboard, camera, usb wireless) are all USB connections? Do you have a USB splitter (a device plugged into your USB connection on the PC that splits it into 2 or more USB connections to plug in more devices)? USB requires power. If you have a USB splitter you will want it to have its own power supply, but even that is not a total resolution. My suggestion, get rid of the amount of USB devices on your PC. If it is a desktop, get a PCI wireless card. If a laptop, get PCMCIA wireless card (assuming you have ports to plug it in). Now, what throws me off, is towards the end you say only one person can connect to the router at a time. The first issues you are having are obviously USB problems. Resolve those first. You need to be able to plug your camera in at the same time as mouse/keyboard, and I recommend getting a solid state wireless card, not a USB one. After that is resolved, then troubleshoot the router. Check it's configuration and make sure it is set to allow multiple connections at a time.

shitty, not the answer i was looking for.
i can't go out any buy any new parts. i need my internet. writing essays, and our shitty school decided to close because we got a few inches of snow. it's a pc. everyone else can connect to the router when anyone is on, just not me. i was on last night until 3am when no one was up and using the internet fine. (and i wasnt booting in safe mode) now that people are using it, i can't. what the fuck. it DOES sound like a usb issue, but i don't know. i can use it sometimes, and other times not at all. |

do you have a limited IP range setup on the router (in terms of DHCP). This *might* explain some connection issues, though does not really explain why it is only you.
I agree with Kurty - it sounds like it might be a power isse. What other USB things do you have plugged in? Can you take out anything not useful (for a test - even remove your mouse if it is usb and see if that makes your connectivity better...)
