Lappy won't connect to the internet!
My laptop doesn't recognize the internet connection. It is hooked to our cable modem. It is saying network connected, but when I try to get online it says page not recognized. I tried the "repair connection" but it takes forever and finally stops. Any wisdom on the subject would be appreciated. |

| Insane | Are you connecting directly to the modem or through a router? Some ISP's require you to register a new device if you are hooking it up directly. If you are behind a router, try this quick check: go to start>run, type "cmd" (no quotes) then type ipconfig /all you will get a message with an IP address and subnet mask and gateway. It should look something like this: Quote:

| Mine is an evil laugh Location: Sydney, Australia | The cable company I'm connected to in Oz requires that you power cycle your cable modem if adding in a different directly connected device. This is worth a try if your lappy is directly connected.

| Upright Location: Northern Virginia | It is hooked to directly to a wireless router. It is wired so to speak. I tried looking for the gateway and that line was blank. I tried a bunch of stuff, even system restore, then tried "repair connection" It is saying "cannot renew IP address"? |

| Insane | put in a static IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS. you shouldn't have any issues after doing that. if you are using a linksys wireless router, use IP 192.168.1.20, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1, and DNS 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.3 Last edited by oiekeooiyw; 10-16-2007 at 09:35 PM.. | Addict Location: Hoosier State | Start - Run - type cmd - a DOS window pops up -type ipconfig /release - wait a few seconds - type ipconfig /renew - exit. You should get a "...network disconnected.." message, wait a few more seconds, try getting on Internet again. If you know how to get into your router's admin, there should be a page that lets you restart the router. Static IP is probably not recommended by your ISP. |
