The EU justice minister Franco (How appropriate) Frattini wants to censor searches for words like "bomb", "kill" or "terrorism" within the EU.
We all know the world changed after 9/11 so of course we should all support this. Censoring these words will undoubtedly prevent the worlds terrorists from finding out on Google how to make bombs or commit genocide, and I applaud this wonderful idea.

And on a more serious note, what the fuck is this chump thinking?

Censorship is kind of like gun control laws. Sounds like a decent idea in theory but in practice it wont stop the people who you want to stop. Any old putz can figure out how to make a bomb. Anyone can set up a proxy to search from a diffrent countries ip address just like anyone can get illegal weapons to do whatever they please. All it takes is a little time a little common sense and a little money.

Oh absolutely. Passing a law making it illegal for criminals to access information just makes a lot of sense. They'd NEVER think of breaking that law somehow would they? ;)

And with issues like this, perhaps we should have one ;) You're right. It's absurd. First off, it won't work. The cyberpunks were right. Information wants to be free. You can't contain it with bullshit censorship anymore. Second, do they really think that terrorists can ONLY make bombs if they can download a pdf of instructions?

Makes me wonder what goes through the minds of these so called "smart/wise" people. As if there is a problem with people that wake up in the morning and think "You know I think I wanna become a terrorist today but how do I start? I know I'll search the web for a DIY amateur terrorist site." Suuurrrreeeee that's how majority of terrorists get started. Just forget the whole terror networks recruiting fresh bodies and training them one-on-one to kill people and stuff.

It's all part of the hysterical fear mongering. Either they're part of it (let's scare the hell out of everyone by coming up with yet more stupid terrorism crap) or they're a victim of it (they scared me, I'm panicking, and now I'll come up with stupid ideas to try and stop the big bad terrorists). I'm not entirely sure which, in this case. . but I'm leaning toward them being part of it.

When people in power get ideas like this, it scares me. This kind of shortsighted thinking does not belong in a democracy. Also as shakran said, this law will have no effect what so ever when it comes to terrorists. I sort of doubt their first source on information on how to build a bomb comes from Google.
