Dvd ripping software
 

Hi,

I have some dvds that i'd like to back up onto my computer. Unfortunatly many of them have copy protection. It has been a long time since I have worked with dvd ripping software. What is the best software out there for getting around this protection? Also if the software runs under linux it is a plus but not necessary as I can run it under wine if I need to.

Currently I use k9copy on linux but it seems that there are some types of copy protection and/or phyiscal dammage to the dvd that prevent ripping in some cases.

I use dvdshrink with no problems.

I also use DVD shrink,and DVD decryter, they're both freeware.

I also use nero, and a modified version of alcohol 120%, I decrypt with DVD decrypter, shrink it to fit a standard DVD with DVD shrink, then mount the iso image onto a virtual drive I created with alcohol 120%, then burn it with nero.

My nero software came with my DVD burner hardware, but they wanted me to pay for the full version, which you can use to create the virtual drive. I downloaded alcohol 120% from a P2P network for free, and used that for my virtual drive.

you can use Ripit4me in conjunction with the programs mentioned if you run into problems.

Handbrake for Mac.

The problem with DVD decrypter is that is no longer updated. I would suggest DVDFab freeware version for ripping, as it includes the newer decryption standards. Then use DVD Shrink for pulling out everything else you don't want.

Handbrake is nice but can't handle more than CSS. Most big titles which tend to get the newest confusication technologies will completely baffle it. Ditto with Shrink, whose development IIRC was halted by DMCA threats from our fair-use friends at Sony.

Here's another vote for DVDFab, sometimes just to pull the main title from a horribly confused DVD. Then Shrink ,or even VobBlanker for better control.

I've been looking for an alternative to DVD decrypter since, as said before, you cant get any more updates. So far its worked on everything I've tried though...

can dvd fab rip it to an ISO? Also a quick google of dvdfab brought up a purchase page. Is there a freeware version?

I found a freeware version of fab , but its an old release. It says use DVD decrypter to make the iso image. I bet you can find a newer release on a P2P network, and hopefully you'll be able to convert it to an iso, without using DVD decrypter.

On Linux, I use "vobcopy", to rip and "mkisofs" to create ISOs.
