DivX Playback
I downloaded some divX movies but when I play them with WMP or the movie player that comes with the DivX codec it says it can't recognize the file type but plays it anyway. The video then gets sluggish. So I updated the drivers to the latest but it still says the same thing but plays the video smoothly now. Oh yeah i get no sound either. What's the deal?

here is the codec i use http://dvd.box.sk/index.php?pid=soft...pol=0&rid=7437 seems to work good for me for most all files
Here is a website with related material http://dvd.box.sk/ |
I happen to like ffdshow. After installing it I've never come across any DivX or XviD AVIs that wouldn't play.

Check VLC at videolan.org. It's played almost everything that I've thrown at it. Basically if WMP can't play it...this most likely can.

I assume when you updated to the latest driver, you mean codec and that would be divx 5.05 right? Is the file an AVI file? If you right click the file, hit properties does it mention both the audio and video codec needed? Usually if it gives you an error like that it can be either audio or video that has the issue. Since you do not get audio but you do get video with the error ill assume its an audio codec issue. So you need to identify which audio codec is needed...google search for a program called AVICodec and check that out. Let us know in here and we can help more if we (or at least I) know more.

I just use the DivX player itself... divx.com.

As has been mentioned in various otehr threads around here, you can also use Gspot to identify the audio/video codec that you need to play this file properly in WMP

WiMP just doesn't play fair with codecs that aren't loaded natively (you download the installer from microsoft, and what it plays without adding anything else). You can use all the ideas that were given here, as I'm sure they all work. But I found that a really small and non-resource hogging program can work really well. You may even have it already on your machine. If not, download the newest version of Winamp. I think its 2.91 right now. It has a built in video player. Just install winamp, and you may have to re-install the codec. But Winamp is what I use to watch Divx and XviD files.

People on these boards have introduced me to Gspot (as heyal linked to in an earlier post). I have found it immensely helpful and I would recommend that you give it a try.

An even better solution then Winamp imo is a tiny program (under 1 meg installed) Sasami. Quick loading, supports anything you throw at it (vob, divx, mpg, etc) And is unique in that you can have it "stay on top" feature.
