new asus p4p800 mobo up and running, first problem:

Woohoo! i installed my first system and without any major fuck-ups! I've installed windows xp pro and things are running so far except it won't connect to the internet. I may have screwed something up during the install when I was asked how I'll connect to the internet and there were a couple of boxes dns and something else and I checked both of them.

The motherboard has it's own onboard gigalanbit thing for networking. Now is there something in xp I can do to get back on the internet? When i click on explorer it just hangs and takes forever to try to connect.

I'm gonna ask the obvious.... Did you install the drivers for the motherboard so you can connect to the internet?

yes

i installed everything that came with the mobo. It recognizes that it has a network adapter and when connecting to the internet it seems like it will (it shows the site's ip address but just keeps trying to connect to it)

You may have to go through the connection setup process again. Incorrect choices during that process can screw things up. How do you connect to the internet?

I also just set up an Asus P4P800. I connect through a DSL router connected to a DSL modem. I'm running win2k so my connection process may be a little different, but I basically answered no to most questions. Mine connected first time, which did actually surprise me.

may seem a lil bit obvious, but did you set up the internet connection?

try the wizard

start->programs->accessories->communicatoins->new connection wiz

The even more obvious question...

Is the network cable plugged in? On both ends?

Is the green "link" light on on the NIC?

Do you have a router/hub setup for the computer to connect through?

Not trying to be a dick, just thinking through things I've fucked up in the past :)

Some ISPs dont like you switching the MAC address of your NICs, I have had this happen to me many times before, all I had to do was call them up and they would reset it for me. The other option is to wait for them to do a complete network reset, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday here at around 3-4 AM

Vanquish hit it on the nail. I called today and it turns out that because it's a new network adapter, it has to be registered or I can't hook up to their isp or something of that nature. The dude guided me through some steps and now it works. Now onto my next problem...

Vanquish 06-14-2003 11:50 PM

I wish someone had told me this the first time it happened to me....I was ready to throw my monitor out the window when I couldn't figure out what went wrong.

Anyway, whats ur next problem ;)
