A relatively minor problem compared to others, but I am at a loss....
The mouse I had began getting 'jumpy'. As I'd move it up the screen, the cursor would suddenly drop off; I'd go left, it'd go up. Since I use the mouse to draw in Illustrator, this was becoming a major problem. So, off to Target for a new mouse. I got a wireless. Same problem. I go into the settings and move things around-slower cursor speed, etc. Didn't work. Ok, faster...nope.
I ran Spysweeper Monday thinking something got in that would have made this issue, but that didn't cure it. The new mouse didn't cure it....
What next?

What are you using as a mousepad? Maybe it's hard for the optic mouse to "read".

I would try:

a) Replacing the battery.

b) Positioning the Transmitter in an unobstructed spot, away from other electronic devices that may be interfering with it. Keep it close though.

c) Go the the Mfr. website and look for a newer or more appropriate driver.

d) Is there a "reset" button on the mouse and transmitter? Often it's just a little
hole that you push a paperclip through for a couple seconds. Try that too.

If these steps fail, try plying it with chedder.

Was your previous mouse optical, or a ball, wireless or no? What are you using for your mousepad?

If both mice are wireless, snag a cheap wired mouse. With opticals if the mousepad, or what you're using to "steer" with is hard, this jumping around will happen quite often. Snag a generic soft mouse pad, and you should be set.

Had a mousepad, ditched it thinking that was the problem, so was just on the desk, back to a new mousepad, still jumping.
The wireless is brand new, got it last night. Both it and the previous wired one are both optical. (not using the batteries it came with-I put in everreadys)
The transmitter is under the desk by the wall; the tv and phone are about 6 feet away, around the corner (my area is in a sort of alcove of an L-shaped room).
I bought the wireless because it was $7 cheaper than the wired optical....I don't like it-it's tiny so my hand is cramping and it seems to jump around a bit more than the wired one did.
This is really frustrating.....and the first person that says 'reformat!' gets it right between the eyes!

How is the mouse connected to your computer? USB or PS/2? Are you using any converters (PS/2 to USB or vice versa)?

I've had things go haywire on me when there's something in between the mouse and my computer. Things such as KVM swithces, mouse and keyboard combiners, or USB/PS2 converters can make funky things happen. If you're using anything of the sort, try the mouse without them and see if it's better.

Queries:
Is it a processing thing? i.e. if you look at the task manager are the CPU and or HD access spiked?

Is the connection of the mouse to the PC a little loose? (my USB on my laptop started wearing out and my mouse was spastic.)

Is it a laptop with a built in mouse, in addition to the external mouse? Or do you have another external device like a tablet?

Is your desk wood grain? I have a wood lap desk for my laptop, and once the urethane coating wore through the texture of the wood grain was sending my mouse everywhere, or added a "drift" to the cursor, even when I wasn't moving the mouse.

Any new electrical devices in the vicinity that may be causes electronic interference with the mouse?

Not sure what you mean by 'spiked'. But in any case, nothing is amiss anywhere else. It's a 'desktop' pc.
Connection isn't loose and it was both mouses (mice?). Receiver to the new one is plugged into a different USB port than the old one was. No converters although the new USB card I'd installed months ago is a 2.0 and the computer was at 1.0, so took some finagling to get it recognized.
No other externals, re tablet.
Desk is woodgrain. Mouse pad is colorful, last mousepad was quite worn-not much left in the way of color. At first I thought that wearing down was the reason...
No new electronics.
Did I just answer my own question with the USB reply???

Might be a good idea to eliminate it as the cause... do you have any built-in USB ports on your motherboard? You don't need the extra speed of USB 2.0 with a mouse, so if you've got any built-in USB 1.1 ports, I'd say give that a shot.

Did you uninstall the old mouse drivers before installing the new ones? kinda sounds like a driver might of gone bad if its doing it with both mice.

If all else fails... reformat =P

do you have any other wireless devices near? have you tried the mouse on another computer in a difrent location?

no other wireless near the pc.
I put back my old optical mouse, took the wireless off. It seems to be better(also using a new mousepad and it's not plugged into the newer 2.0 USB, but rather the USB of the pc), although I haven't tried it in Illustrator yet.

Is your mouse better now?

by "spiked" I mean if you open the task manager is CPU usage at 100%.

If your wireless receiver is near a power supply it can cause the mouse to do funky things...
