Finding a good keyboard?
 

What keyboard does everyone use, do you like it, would you recommend it based on what you read below?

My keyboard recently broke.. a short in the wire, going to see if replacing the wire will fix it later.

Anyways I got this crap keyboard to fill the emptiness while its broke and I hate it. Yah its cheap but its the style the really bugs me. The biggest flaw is a power/sleep/wake buttons right above the arrows. Then other style issues I have are oversized Enter key, tiny backspace key and very stiff keys - It's making my fingers tired pushing them down. It also seems like I am hitting the wrong keys alot more(i dont know why but that makes me have to use the tiny backspace more and so without slowing my typing speed down to about half I end up with mes\agg\es lil\ke tis. My other keyboard, has the "\ |"key under the enter key which screws up the shift key, I can't stand that either.

I guess I'm just a little too attached to my old keyboard...

Microsoft Natural Keyboards are nice.

I like the MS ergonomic (not the one that's angled at the middle) and the cheap black IBM keyboard (http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...7415&storeId=1)

Logitech makes the sweetest keyboards! Get yourself a nice wireless one and you'll be really happy. The batteries last for nearly a year, and there are no problems with it communicating with the receiver.

Funny, I was thinking about keyboards just
this weekend. Back in the late '80s I was using
an Apollo workstation that had the sweetest
keyboard I've ever used. When you pressed
a key, it seemed to resist the pressure just
a little bit more the farther down it went, until
suddenly it would ease up and the key would
bottom out and the stroke would register.

It wasn't snappy or clicky, more like the feeling
of rolling something up a hill and suddenly
rounding the crest.

Anybody know what mechanism that was, and
if there are any keyboards today built on the
same principles?

Because I'm pretty tired of all this general
mushiness.

There's this great computer store near where I live. They usually have cheap shit, but sometimes they actually get some quality items. Last time I was in, they had black Dell OEM keyboards for $7. No IE or Microsoft keys or anything, just pure, glorious functionality.

So, I would recommend skipping Best Buy and finding an independent store locally, and seeing if they do something similar.

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro

has all the media buttons at the top... and the arrow keys are normal and not all squished like on some of the ms natural keyboards...

I like going to a local puter shop and getting just a cheap generic keyboard without all the extra buttons im not gonna use anyway.

Make that three for the Logitech. I have the cordless version in black with silver trim. Also the cordless optical mouse to match. Unlike Boco, mine's kind of a battery hog. I replace every them every 6 weeks or so.

I've been using the original Microsoft Natural Keyboard for years.

I tried using a new Natural Keyboard but found it wouldn't work with my KVM switch. I also tried a standard keyboard and my wrists hurt. So, I went back to my vintage Natural Keyboard.

I love my Logitech wireless. I've had it for just over 6 months and haven't had to change the batteries yet.

i use a compaq internet keyboard that came w/ the pc.

when i built my new pc, i switched the keyboard over.

to me, it doesnt really matter how fancy it is, but i just want my keyboard. i'm really used to it and i know where everything is.

I've always had a question about keyboards, what are the keyboards that are split in the middle to make it better for your hands or something? I've always wanted to try one of those, are they good or bad?

rack up another one for Logitech. I have a Cordless Freedom optical and I absolutely love it. I usually get about 2 months on a set of batteries.

I want one with the squishy stuff on the wrist part, but I havn't bothered to get a new one.

I use a 1989 IBM keyboard. I love it. Each key is a mechanical switch, no membrane crap. Also, no stupid windows keys. Lol. It rocks. I had replaced the IBM with a MS Office keyboard, but after a month, went back to the IBM.

Adesso makes some pretty nice boards without all the added crap like windows keys or power keys.

Nothing will beat the old IBM mechanical switch boards.

I have a logitech something, a logitech elite, and the Auravison Eluminix. I love to use all three. I would say that the Eluminix is just like my laptops keyboard with teh addition of a number pad and it lights up for easier use in the dark. I do like all three because they do have the larger backspace keys and the enter keys arent too large or small. and the feel of all three is nice and solid without being overstiff.

MS Natural (old skool w/non squasy arrows) if you can find it, or grab the MS Natural Multimedia edition, it's nice too.

I use the microsoft internet pro keyboard... very cool.

I've got a logitech usb keyboard. Good feel overall but I'm a big fan of the older, clicky IBM keyboards. Too bad I can only use usb though.

I used to use the old IBM "Model M" keyboards, but my fiance complained that it was too noisy, and that my typing was keeping her up at night. I then switched to the Logitech Cordless Keyboard, and I love it almost as much as I love the Model M. Coupled with my Logitech Cordless Mouseman, it freakin rocks. I'm all about cordless desktop components, I even switched to the Logitech Wingman Cordless Gamepad. It works beautifully with GTAIII and GTA:Vice City :)

loved the microsoft natural keyboard at work so much that i bought one for home. love the feel of the keys. kind of remind me of the feel of old school apple computers. anyway, not really sure if it helped my hand or not - they kinda hurt either way regardless of the type of keyboard used. i would have to go w/ the ms keyboards regardless of which type.

I gave away a M$oft natural, as I could not adapt to it. That is not to say it isn't good, I just could not adapt. Bought another M$soft keyboard, the Office version. Gave that away also, (my grandchildren think I have money because I give them stuff I don't want). Keytronics makes a pretty tuff ten dollar keyboard. No frills, no instant shortcut keys, no nothing, just a cheap keyboard that lasts a lot longer than my family wants. Ya know, "what's he gonna give us".

Personally I've always felt is depends from person to person. Everyone in my household has their own personal preference. Personally I find my keyboards by going around computer fairs and stores with a laptop and just testing different ones out. My current keyboard, which I feel is the best I've ever used, cost only 5 pounds, and was found at a car boot sale. And yes, it is a bog standard logitech keyboard. Shiny and black though. Oooh...purdy.

Though one thing I will never see as justified are normal keyboards sold at hundreds of dollars. I mean, at the end of the day, its a keyboard. You don't need rocket science to make sure that the keys can be depressed smoothly.

logitech navigator ,extremely nice kb

One more Logitech cordless user here too. I've had it for a year and a half and I've changed the batteries about 3 times. I'd get another cordless if and when this one packs it in.

I'm using the Logitech Cordless Navigator Duo + MS Optical Explorer mouse. The Cordless Navigator Duo comes with a mouse and a keyboard but the mouse is a piece of sh*t. I think the best (and most expensive) combination is Logitech Cordless Elite Duo keyboard + Logitech MX700 mouse

I agree! Great keyboard click for feedback and nearly indestructable. Plus they make great door stops since they are heavy.

I have a Microsoft Natural keyboard. I love it. It took a day or two to get used to the split but it is VERY comfortable to use.

I'm putting in another vote for the IBM Model M. My personal Model M will be 13 years old in a month and it still works like a charm. You can't go wrong with a clicky.

mine's a logitech wireless kb + mouse combo. though i find it annoying that there's no close button. with the f-lock mode on, you can't even use alt+f4.

I didn't know that mine was a Model M, but the pic above is what I have. I love it. I thought it was a 1989 model, but it was made July 16 1991. Still like new! Now, with mice, I'm all for innovation. I have a cordless Logitech MX700, and it rocks. But I don't think it's possible to make a better keyboard than this here IBM. lol

Hey, does anyone have a recomendation for a good mini-board? I tried the Adesso Eagle Touch, but the feedback was horrid. I spend about 80% of my time infront of a laptop keyboard and switching to a full sized board is tough at times.

I would prefer something fairly cheap as I tend to type really heavy and break boards often, as I used an IBM 'M' board for years.
