some help please, Cd Drive
well the drive wont read cds, or burn them for that matter.
i just really want to get it to burn, after i leave a blank disk in for about a day it will finally pick it up, ill start to burn, as soon as it starts writing the cd (about 6 or 7% into the first song) it will stop writing. Dont really have enough cash to take this baby to a repair shop, anyone have any advice? |
Would the repair be more expensive than just buying a new one? CD Burners are pretty cheap these days.
|
yea it's not really something you get repaired. if you want to open up the computer case you can check a few things, like making sure the cables are all nice and tightly plugged into the drive and also into the motherboard. possibly get a can of compressed air and blow out the drive a bit while the tray is open? but these drives do go bad sometimes and are then just junk...
you can pick up a new one for $20 anywhere online (for $30 you can get a DVD burner/CD burner). |
i've got a stack of 5 optical drives that in some way or another dont function, pitch it and get a new one for $30
|
wow, i had no idea they were so cheap.
thanks |
If you shop around a bit you can get a dvd/cd burner for $45. tigerdirect.com or newegg.com would be good places to look. or save yourself $20 and just get the cd burner whatever fits your needs better. but they are real simple to swap out.
|
tiger direct is a rip off and there rebates are a scam, go with newegg.

You could also try cleaning your drive - you can buy CDs with small brushes attached to them specifically for cleaning the lens.
By the sounds of things though your drive is dead. Luckily they are really cheap so you should definitely be able to get a new one. |
