mac/quicktime/wmv help!

so i recently bought a new imac, my first mac to own... and i'm transfering files over from my old computer... i have several video files that require windows media player to watch. i went to the windows media download center and see 2 options for me, either download windows media for mac os x or download something called 'flip4mac' which allows wmv files to be played on quicktime.

i downloaded flip4mac and it says it can't install it because "QuickTime version 6.5.1 or later is required to run Flip4Mac WMV Player." but my quicktime is 7.0.4.... brand new right? what gives?

i also tried downloading windows media as it's own program (even though i don't necissarily want more crap than i need) and when i go to open the file that downloads it sends me to excel.

EDIT--> so i'm dragging up my own old thread because the problem isn't fixed, i just got preoccupied.

to redlemon: i tried that, but you can't save the info.plist, it only will save as a new file and it won't save under the flip4mac package. i also went back and updated my quicktime to the newest version about 30 minutes ago.

to willravel: i downloaded VLC, but that doesn't help me with webpages with .wmv as far as i can tell, i also downloaded flip4mac from the page you linked as well as microsoft's page

anyone else?? help!

Strange. I just did a quick web search, someone said

Copy package to HD. Right click > show package contents
Go to Contents > double-click Info.plist
Find "IFRequirementDicts" & delete @ the top level.
Hope that works!

The most widely applicable player is VLC, and it can play most anything on a Mac. I also have Flip4Mac, and it seems to work well enough. Did you download it using Safari browser? As I understand it, Safari is set up to automatically install it. Try opening Safari and downloading it from this page.

Ah, even better:

Bet you're on an Intel Mac. Update the OS to 10.4.7 and check to see if your Intel Mac needs a firmware update too. Always Repair Disk Permissions Before and After ANY software install including Apple's.

I see your Quicktime is also a bit out of date. Run Software Update first, update everything it asks for, then go back and try to do the FlipWMV.

ya I think the Flip4Mac for Intel chipsets just came out. I dunno, mine works fine. Try running software update like Redlemon said
