Good Scanner software

I have an old Canon CanoScan N650U scanner, and the scanning software that came with it is lame at best. I sometimes scan in old hard copies of pictures so i can have electronic copies in case the originals degrade. My question is, is there software out there that will let my scan in the whole bed of the scanner and automatically detects multiple pictures and saves them to seperate files at a specified DPI?

I know this is a tall order, but any help is appreciated

I've used ABBYY FineReader before. It is pricey IMHO for home use though.
