Looking for Laptop Hardrive recommendations - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Hi all,

Had the hard drive on my laptop die recently and am going to have to replace it. Was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what to go with. I know I've had bad experiences with 3.5" maxtors in the past. Are there any that are better than others or are they all pretty much on par?

I got a 5400 rpm 40gb Samsung spin point for like 60 bucks, ive had a good experience with it so far. Just remember higher RPM means running hotter and less battery life. At least with my experience

Some laptops ship with real dinosaurs. Expect a big improvement if you hand-pick your replacement drive.

I'm very happy with my 100GB Seagate. (Momentus 7200.1) Fastest notebook drive I've used yet it's nice and quiet. Hitachi Travelstars have a good track record. My simple render and copy tests put raw performance above Seagate. YMMV.

There are 5400 and 7200RPM versions and different sizes of both.

Development has really made a difference in power/heat/noise of 7200s. Some of them are better than their 5400RPM kin (as with the Seagates).

Thanks to both of you for suggestions, I ended up going for an 80Gb Samsung spinpoint. It will be interesting to see what the faster 5200 RPM does to the machine heat and battery life wise.
