Changed clock speed, comp doesn't start up..
So yea, my computer was booting really slowly the other day so I thought I'd check bios to see if it was running at 100 instead of 133 like it has done before. It wasn't but I figured id change it to 166 anyways (for some reason, not really sure why I changed it) and now it won't boot. The heatsink starts, the harddrives fire up, but it doesn't ever show bios or anything on my monitor. I tried clearing it with the jumper, and also tried clearing the settings by taking the battery out, still no dice.
I have like a AMD 2200+ with THIS Motherboard. ATI 9800 pro video card 768mb ddr ram Any help would be appreciated! I've been searching google but haven't found anything really. Maybe Ive been searching for the wrong things.. hah. |
Well. It's not impossible the CPU is fried. I don't have enough experiance overclocking to say if there's good odds for that, or what; but, it could have happened.
Can you tell if you're getting past POST? Any beeps or LEDs to lead you on your happy POST code checking way? As you say, you've tried to reset the board's settings to thier defaults. That's the first thing I'd do too. Since you're not getting anything on the monitor, I'm assuming you mean that there's some indication the video and monitor work...but there's no indication the board's getting past post. IE: no bios or boot screen. At this point, the best suggestion I have is to start at question #1: Is it passing POST? If not, try to find out specifically what component is busted. Use POST codes, if any are happening. Then start swapping out components with known-good stuff and keeping your fingers crossed. |
Look in the motherboard manual on how to reset the bios to default with a jumper on the mother board.
hopefuly you just pushed it to far, and it can't boot, unfortunatly you may have fried your chip. |
Some CMOS settings can be persistent. How long was the battery removed? Try shorting the jumper again (pins 2&3) but this time power it up for 2 seconds or so. It won't POST, but this may kick it in the head. Power off again and switch the jumper back to pins 1&2. Any change?
|
Nope, it won't POST. I tried changing the jumper to 2 and 3 and starting up, nothing. I had the battery removed for about 4 or 5 minutes, started up without it and still nothing. Put it back in, still nothing. It would suck if the processor is fried, but it's old, maybe time for a new (faster) one.
Thanks for all the help. |
Make sure the internal speaker is attached.
Disconnect absolutely everything but the speaker, front panel wires, video and one stick of memory. Anything? Beeps, lights, small fires? Edit: When you removed the battery did you also unplug and discharge the power supply? Power settings on some boards can keep CMOS memory alive for a very long time. That the jumper hasn't worked is either mysterious or a bad sign. :( |
it could also be the motherboard too, not the cpu.
|
Does your bios have a critical temp alarm? I have a similar motherboard that will sound an alarm and shutdown if the temp gets over 72C. It saved my ass when I set my clock speed up too high. If you did have that, it seems like it'd shut it down before any harm was done. Also, Did the computer ever POST after you set the clock speed up? It seems like the comp could make it past POST at least once before it overheated enough to fry the mobo and/or processor.

When you said the harddrives boot up, are they being accessed? By that I mean can you hear them working, such as the pin hitting the platter?

edited because you already tried what I mentioned.

So yea, an update.. of sorts.. I bought a mobo and processor, ram off newegg, and I get it installed, windows starts up and not a second later it restarts. I currently only have a 300w psu so I figured that might be the reason why, and I hope that's all it is. Any suggestions?
|
did you format the drive? windows will choke if you have an entirely new mobo/CPU..

Hah yea, I forgot about all that.. I had to head to work and was in a bit of a hurry trying to figure it all out.. But yea, I formatted and all is well. Thanks.
