Chat program for Linux.

I'm not sure if this is a repost; if it is, I apologize, but my search didn't turn up anything.

I'd like some opinions on favorite chat/IRC programs for linux. I've been using Trillian in Windows and am fairly fond of it; something that runs in the same vein would be nice. Different styles of programs are okay, too! Just let me know what you use and why, and perhaps show me where to get it. ;)

Thanks!

I use gaim for instant messaging, and X-Chat for IRC. gaim is an all-in one program, but it's not quite as pretty as trillan.

Gaim - http://gaim.sf.net - it comes with most major distributions, but you should probably get the most recent version from their site - MANY improvements lately :D

You can use it for Chat and IRC, but I do prefer XChat - www.xchat.org - for IRC.

Besides, we have a Gaim developer as a TFP member, so you better use it! :p

Gaim and X-Chat all the way :D

Peetster 06-05-2003 07:01 AM

Yup, another happy X-Chat user.

A great place for linux code is http://freshmeat.net

Sounds like GAIM is the winner for IMs. I did upgrade the version that comes with RH 8.0 and it's looking good. :) I have yet to try to download XChat.

I'll say it for ChipX86 (our resident Gaim developer) so perhaps he can not waste the time doing so himself - it's Gaim or gaim, but not GAIM or gAIM. Legal reasons.

Glad you like it - they do some pretty awesome work :)

oblar 06-05-2003 01:55 PM

yeah, definatley go gaim for x im's.. and x-chat for x irc..

if you go console then I am not sure if gaim does console work, but epic4 and bitchx are good irc console clients... and if you look there are aim/icq clients for console as well

Thraeryn 06-06-2003 05:21 AM

I actually didn't have to d/l x-chat at all, it was part of the RH 8 install. Been using it for the past few days, and it works pretty well.

And I'll know about Gaim from now on. ;)

I like irssi for backup and x-chat for usual.

You can keep using trillian in linux, though.

Why would you want to though? You can use the program that has the ability to connect to Yahoo and wrote it themselves, or you can use the program that uses the first program's code to connect to yahoo and has never given them credit for it.

Not to mention the Gaim team is made of innovators. They were the first to bring us tabbed IMing among many other cool things. ("us" being people in general, not just Linux users)

Thraeryn 06-06-2003 08:03 PM

Y'know, the more I use Gaim, the more I grow to appreciate it. The only thing I miss from Trillian is the transparency. Everything else is there!

Antagony 06-06-2003 09:01 PM

irssi is the best linux IRC client, hands down. It's not an X application, but you can still make it relatively pretty with a good X terminal.

irssi irssi irsssi

And for AIM/ICQ/etc Gaim Gaim Gaim

irssi

irssi

Empty_One 06-06-2003 10:54 PM

gotta go with gaim for IM, and either BitchX of irssi for irc.

For a console app that does IM, try pork

lol, what about us kosher dudes?

Ooh, if you're using Gaim that comes with RH8, go grab the newest RPM on http://gaim.sf.net/. That one with RH8 was part of the 0.59.x series. Almost all of the code and all of the UI has been rewritten in 0.60, and we're now up to 0.64. Give it a shot :)

0.65 will be very cool. I'm rewriting the internals and several UI elements. Core/UI-split goodness!

Thraeryn 06-09-2003 07:58 AM

I did get the latest Gaim after finding that the RH 8 version didn't support Y! ;) The new changes sound like good stuff! I'm sure you'll let us all know when it's released. :D

ChipX86 06-09-2003 02:01 PM

Will do. Our release cycle is every 2 weeks on a Thursday, so you can look for it around then. The windows version typically comes out a day or two after that. However, this release is different. So many things have changed, that it'll likely be a week or two late.
