replacing lan cord caps?

i got new caps for my one lan cable, but i can't quite figure out how to replace them, i figured i can yank em off, but i'm not sure if i'll beable to slide new ones on without messing up and mixing up the order.... the snaps on my lan cord broke off from use and abuse

any suggestions would help!

are you talking about the RJ-45 connector? If so you're gonna need an RJ45 crimper. It can be done without one, but it's a pain in the ass and half the time it won't work anyway.

New caps???

Not being a poindexter, but you're reffering to the connector that you plug into the jack right?

What you need is an RJ45 crimper. You could yank/cut the ones off, but then you'd have to cut back the outer sheathing and crimp on the new one. It's tricky to do and it takes a bit of practice.

Making cables is such a thankless job. I just buy these days unless it's panel or wall wiring. Fry's has crazy-cheap deals if you keep your eyes open. Last pile I bought were 25' Cat 6 for $3. That's nuts. It used to be cheaper to make them.

Unless this cable is permanently attached to a device you need to keep, I would recommend throwing the cable away and replacing it. Re-terminating the end of a cat-5 or cat-6 network cable is tough and I would not try to unless you have experience and the right tools. The only reason I make any of my own cables is when I need a length that is difficult to find.

I'm with Jack1.0. Unless you plan on making a ton of cable lengths, just buy a new one.

Skeelz y0.

Dudes, today a monitor was getting tossed so I snipped the VGA cord off. Maybe I'll try a VGA to CAT5 mod for kicks.

I always make my own cables. It costs me about $1 plus 5 to 10 cents a foot.
