Reformatting, yay!

Boo, actually...oh well.

Some of you may have read about my Abit problems...sigh.

Anyway, it seems that somehow, something did get fucked up with the OS, cause a clean install works just fine. Guess it was those unstable heatsink drivers...lol.

So, here's the deal. Right now, the old beast only has XP on it.

What else should it have?

I'm going to be adding Systemworks2003 Pro, so I can Ghost the damn thing when I'm done and not have to worry about wasting a week of reinstalling everything the next time I fuck it all up.

Discuss among yourselves.

Yep.

To recap: I installed a new heatsink, and when I turned it back on, there was a problem, the USB drivers were busted. Sadly, it's an Abit AT7, which has no PS/2 ports, and thusly I was boned.

So, what kinda stuff should I put on there?

I'd ghost twice. Once now, when there's nothing on it. Once when you have your selected programs on it.

Might as well throw the XP service pack on. Office if you use it. Antivirus software. Latest version of whatever browser you use. Latest drivers of whatever you have (printer, sound, etc.) Anything after this is optional in my opinion.

Not sure what your machine is used for but...

WinZip?
RealPlayer?
QuickTime?
Latest Windows Media Player (or whatever player you use)
WinAmp?
KaZaa?
Pop-Up Killer (If not using Mozilla)?
Video/Audio Codecs?
Snood? (hehe, guilty pleasure)
Powertoys XP?
Folding@Home (with TFProject as your Team!)

Once again, not sure what you use your machine for soooo:
Visual Studio?
Photoshop?

Anyways, I don't know if any of that helps you.. I just tried to go through a mental list of what I do on a reformat. Good luck.

Good reccomendations, remeber to check out the Windows Top Downloads thread in this forum.

A few of my own reccomendation:

WinRAR over Winzip any day of the week
Kazaa lite over Kazaa (can't stress this point enough)
AVG anti-virus (quite good and FREE)
Ad-aware
The rest is totally up to you and what sort of user you are....

I meant KaZaa-Lite [K++].. sorry about that.

I thought about suggesting Ad-Aware, but decided that it'd probably be something that you'd do after a ghost restore. The signature files come out fairly regularly, and it' be cool to be completely up to date w/ that kind of stuff.

Another thing: do you use a text editor besides notepad (i.e. UltraEdit). If so, install the editor as well.
FTP Program?
mIRC/Script?

Think that's it.. again.

I have heard of Mozilla but forgot what it was or what is does, (something to do with preventing popups? i think?)

Powertoys XP sounds interesting...

Mozilla is a highly reccomended web browser (still souce code?) which has great funtionality (it has a built-in pop-up killer for instance)
Codecs are file decompressors. They essentially make it possible for you to listen to or view digital media like mp3's or avi's
As I recall snood is a type of game (not really familiar with it)
Powertoys XP is the windows XP version of powertoys, which are very useful third party add-ins for Windows. They do all sort of minor registry changes like automatically clearing IE history or get rid of arrows on shortcuts
Folding at home is a type of protein folding simulation using users computers to help with computations.

Thanks Great Scott, summed it all up nicely. Snood is an adictive puzzle game. It's not complex at all, just fun (and I always seem to find myself saying "Just one more game....")

VLC - It runs most video formats and you do not need extra codecs as far as I know. Its free and availible on multiple platforms.
