File list on a website
I have a friend that occasionally uploads pics for me to his website. He just dumps them on the server but doesn't actually link anything to them. I then use them on various forums and such. My problem is that, after awhile, I tend to forget what I named the pics and can't retrieve them. Is there a way to get a file listing of the pics that have been uploaded? He says he doesn't know how to do it.

Sounds kind of odd to be asking something like that to all of us when you could just ask your friend.
|
I suggest you use better file naming conventions. ;-)
|
just ask your friend to create an index.htm file and put the names on it.

if he can't see the filenames, how is he uploading? with some feature on the website's pages, i guess -
he should connect to his ftp with a real ftp program, then BAM there's the file list |
How about keeping a copy of them on your machine as well. Keep the names the same.

Is it that you want to be able to get a directory listing and can't?
This is something that puzzles me and I've been meaning to research. If a directory has permissions of 755 (rwxr-xr-x), everyone should be able to view a list of the files within. I'm sure everyone has seen web pages that are just a list of files. But on my site, I can't see lists of files in directories that lack an index.html (or other default) page. I get a 403 Forbidden error. If I find the reason, I'll post back. |
I've found out through my college hosting that any directory that has an index.html file will NOT display the directory listing of uploaded files. For my website on the server, I simply deleted my index.html file that I made for my class, and all of the files became listed when I went to the address. That's as much info as I know about it.

You can usually FTP to the webserver and see the files. Most of the time you don't even have to know the password to the account, as it is marked as a public view folder/file. You won't have permission to change anything on it though.
This is an old technique used to find login:password encryption files. |
