I/O Device error on DVD-RW

I've been having this intermittent problem with my dvd drive lately. The drive shows up in My Computer but it does not recognize the disk inside and when I try to open it, I get an I/O device error. I have a SATA plextor drive and an asus mobo, this is my first time using SATA so it's probably some stupid mistake

I have no idea what the PIO and DMA settings should be at so they're both on auto. There's also some weird stuff going on in the bios, my hard drive is 3rd master and the dvdrom is 4th master while 1st and 2nd master are empty.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe but the writer is brand new, maybe 3-4 months. The disk doesn't even show up, it just shows the dvd-rw drive as if there's no disk at all.

The same amount of time, I saved only a few parts from my last computer and built this one mostly from scratch.
