What exactly happened to the data?

Real hard for me to ask but......what did they decide was the reason for the data loss?

billege 04-19-2003 11:21 AM

I told you, my cat used his mind ray to demagnatize the hard drives.

oldtimer 04-19-2003 11:23 AM

If only that were possible.......
*imagines the possibilities*

johnnysmokes 04-19-2003 11:26 AM

World's King 04-19-2003 11:37 AM

A cow tripped over something and knocked a lantern to the ground and it started this huge fire that burned down most of Chicago.

oldtimer 04-19-2003 11:38 AM

Hopefully not............I ask so my mind can finally be at peace.....when I learn how then I can yell out all the profanities I can (mentally of course) then get back to enjoying the new TFP.

SecretMethod70 04-19-2003 11:56 AM

hard drives fail, it's that simple. In our case, two hard drives fail. Typiycally there isn't a "cause" for these things, they just sort of...happen. :(

billege 04-19-2003 12:36 PM

"two hard drives failED"

FailED.

Heh, I am an ass...hehehehe.

G_Whiz 04-19-2003 12:48 PM

Too bad it happened, but we're back up now.

sngx1275 04-19-2003 01:04 PM

Empty_One 04-19-2003 01:41 PM

I'm just glad they brought it back up. Welcome Back!

GremlinDelirium 04-19-2003 01:47 PM

Personally, I don't care what happened, as long as the site stays up, I'm happy. :)

Amen to that.

rogue49 04-19-2003 02:27 PM

Diddo
Everything starts anew.

oldtimer 04-19-2003 03:15 PM

Likin' the new look......for short notice this is bad ass.

oldtimer 04-19-2003 03:24 PM

Aside from being a stubbon jackass, that's pretty hard for me to believe unless there was some foul play involved. Or it just could be that the hd's were run straineously for far too long. Yeah, that's good enough. I'm over it.

pt415999 04-19-2003 03:56 PM

Aliens... has to be....

bundy 04-19-2003 04:00 PM

Glad-I-Ate-Her 04-19-2003 04:35 PM

I blame OBL, Saddam and the Taliban!

Stinky Pee 04-19-2003 04:36 PM

Well, a physical crash can occur in one of many ways. The heads are held over magnetized metal plates spinnig at several thousand RPM. This creates a cushion of air between the heads and the disk surface. One way that many drives fail (one of the most audible) is that something happens to cause that air cushion to dissipate. The heads physically crash into the disk surface, shredding it on a molecular leval and eradicating data as the disk (literally) screeches to a halt.

Other problems can occur, a motor can burn out, a connection can break, the mounting hardware that holds the individual disks inside the drive can break and let the disks wobble out of control, crashing into the inside of the casing (it's happened to me.)

Someitmes, the data can come back, sometimes not. I burned out a motor, and successfully transplanted the data disks into another drive that had physical damage. If the heads crash, which I'm guessing is what happened, you probably have no hope.

I think we should send billege's cat some kitty treats to prevent another psychic cat attack. I only got in during v3, but 4 sounds like plenty to me, so lets all keep the cat happy. ;)

oane 04-19-2003 08:53 PM

Ventillation/cooling of HDD is very important. The newer drives are much more sensitive it seems. Oh, Segate rocks. Segate Cheetah is the real deal :)

RenegadeSoul 04-19-2003 08:57 PM

well, thanks to Halx for fixing it all back up. Its good to be back

RenegadeSoul 04-19-2003 08:58 PM

well, thanks to Halx for fixing it all back up. Its good to be back, here's my first post of the new version, may we have many good times ahead. Cheers.

Crazboos 04-19-2003 09:36 PM

Ya see MoJo, the lab monkey, tried to stick his thingie in the other thingie and next thing you know there's smoke and MoJo is on the floor holding his thingie.

Xixox 04-20-2003 01:30 AM

They went to Silicon Heaven, of course!

snowy 04-20-2003 01:35 AM

just happy to have my tfp back...:)

Ashton 04-20-2003 02:13 AM

Someone spilled Beer on the server.....causing a massive short to send 1.21 jiggawatts to the flux capacitor, thus propelling both hard drives back to the year 1955.... The information those drives contain could change the world as we know it. I have fitted the SS with the newest version of the flux capacitor, controlled by a overclocked 3.6 P4..... and about to attempt to travel back to 1955, To retrieve the T.F.P's data and perhaps save the world.... Wish me Luck! :)
