the scenes in Milan

absolute disgrace... if this was an English club in a Euro tie, there would probably be another ban.

Match abandoned due to flares
Reuters
MILAN, Italy -- The Champions League quarter-final between Inter Milan and city rivals AC Milan was abandoned after 73 minutes on Tuesday after Milan keeper Dida was struck by one of dozens of flares thrown down from the stands.

German referee Markus Merk took the players off the pitch at the San Siro stadium after Inter fans began hurling plastic bottles and then over 30 flares on to the penalty area below them after a header by Esteban Cambiasso was disallowed.

Dida received medical treatment to his shoulder while Inter players urged their fans to stop hurling objects on to the pitch.

The goal frame disappeared in clouds of smoke as flares continued to be rained down and burn on the pitch.

The players came back on to the field after 25 minutes but Merk took them off again after just 30 seconds play and abandoned the game when more flares came raining down with no sign of intervention from the police.

Milan were leading 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Andriy Shevchenko, which had put them 3-0 up on aggregate after they won last week's first-leg 2-0 at the San Siro stadium the two clubs share.

UEFA's website reported that "referee Merk will now submit his report to the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body, who will deal with the case".

SECOND TIME

This is the second time this season that a Champions League match in Italy has been abandoned following crowd disorder.

In September AS Roma's game at home to Dynamo Kiev was halted after referee Anders Frisk was hit by a missile thrown from the crowd and the Serie A club were ordered to play two home games behind closed doors.

"There were two or three hundred hooligans who were involved in throwing the flares," said Milan police chief Paolo Scarpi, "They have been caught on video camera -- they were the usual hotheads from the Inter sector," he added.

Scarpi said a large number of flares had been confiscated at the entrance to the stadium before the game -- but clearly dozens more had been smuggled through.

The incidents in Milan also do northing to dispel fears of trouble when Juventus host Liverpool in the second leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday.

The match is the first to be played by Liverpool against Juventus in Turin since the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985 accounted for 39 Juventus fans dying after being charged by Liverpool fans.

Although Liverpool staged a public apology for the deaths at the first leg in Liverpool last week, a number of Juventus fans turned their backs on the gesture and the threat of trouble in the return leg have prompted the authorities to increase security in Turin on Wednesday.

Bah, Dida was very lucky with the flare hitting him just on the top of the shoulder and not his head.

I agree if this were and English club, they would probably be banned from the Champs League for the next season.

fatbob 04-13-2005 06:09 AM

i don't know if that is true. lots of things get thrown onto the field by lots of fans at the moment. i don't know if an english team would get singled out...if they did it is perhaps down to a well deserved reputation...

the actions of the fans were bad though. we'll have to wait and see what action is taken against inter.
i kinda hope that they don't ban fireworks from italian games though because it has become such a great part of the whole spectacle...

WillyPete 04-13-2005 07:50 AM

They should hit them where it hurts. Particularly after the racism fiasco in Spain.
If the home team fans do it (usually the case) they should terminate the game and then the home team forfeits the game and the points equivalent for one win.

No-one will let their own team suffer like that and the fans will police themselves.
They've tried clamping down on player aggression and problems, now they need to be stricter on fans.

Red card them. None of this pussy styled 'sin bin' punishment.

i think "absolute disgrace" doesn't do justice to what happened in Milan. it's fucking assinine. if it was my choice, i would want nothing more than to have the rest of the championship games, including THE championship game, played behind closed doors with NO spectators. what i don't understand is how over here in the U.S., we make a huge deal when fans and players get in a little scuffle during a basketball game, but over in Europe, shit like this happens, and while various head honcho's say that something will be done about it, nothing will happen. it's no big deal to them. this type of shit comes with the sport. fucking ridiculous. i love soccer (football), but i have no respect for the fans.

RubenBaraja 04-13-2005 03:30 PM

Bit of trouble with Juventus - Liverpool in Turin tonight too. Nothing to the extent of Milan though.

About time they banned the "offending" teams for a couple of seasons from Europe. None of this crappy playing two games behind closed doors rubbish that happens. Dida could have been killed if he had turned into the flare.

Fair enough, English fans aren't exactly Ned Flanders wannabes, but our worst followers are no worse than the Italian thugs that caused the Milan derby to be called off.

Its laughable to claim that English fans are dealt with in the same way as any other European nation's fans. One example of UEFA 'fairness'. Leeds v Galatasaray, April 2000. You'll remember two were leeds fans stabbed to death. Galatasaray's penalty? In a word... Nout.

You can't possibly believe Leeds United would have got off scot free if they had carried out stabbings on Galatasaray fans.

fatbob 04-14-2005 10:49 AM

were there not 'circumstances' around those stabbings though...i seem to remember that the fans (or one of them) was stabbed by a non-galatasaray fan...pissed people in a dodgy part of a city and one of them got stabbed, shit, totally shit, but it happens but it wasn't down to football violence if i remember correctly...could be completely wrong though...

i have travelled to a couple of european championships and also a world cup and i have to tell you that the english fans are the worst, the germans are pretty bad too but there is something horrible about the way english football fans are when they travel. i have got many english friends that concur incidently...

there was a rumour going round that the interisti (the inter fans) were going to cause some sort of disruption to the match in protest at moratti the club president. agreed that it was a real shame that dida got hit but there was something going to happen that night and the punishments are what the fans want so that they can hit moratti where it hurts...in his prada wallet!

Strange Famous 04-15-2005 11:46 AM

surprise, surprise, UEFA have decided to issue no real punishment

Inter handed stadium ban and fine

Inter Milan have been fined £132,000 by Uefa and must play their next four European games behind closed doors after crowd trouble against AC Milan.
Inter fans threw missiles on to the San Siro pitch, and Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg tie was stopped with AC Milan leading 1-0.

AC have been awarded a 5-0 aggregate win and go through to the semi-finals where they will meet PSV Eindhoven.

Two games will be added to the ban if Inter reoffend in the next three years.

Inter can appeal against the decision and they have three days to do so.

AC Milan goalkeeper Dida was struck on the shoulder by a missile during the second half of the game as Inter fans protested after having a goal disallowed by referee Markus Merk.

It had been expected that Inter would face much harsher sanctions and the possibility of a ban from European competition had been mooted in some quarters.

But Uefa spokesman William Gaillard defended the level of punishment.

"There will be some people who think it is lenient and some people who think it harsh," Gaillard told BBC Radio Five Live.

This is the largest fine in Uefa's history. It is a hefty punishment

Uefa spokesman William Gaillard

"This is the largest fine in Uefa's history. The loss of four home games amounts to seven or eight million euros.

"It is a hefty punishment compared to anything that has been done for over five years.

"This kind of behaviour is clearly not acceptable and if any more trouble occurs it is obvious that they would get something heavier."

In 2001 Inter were ordered to play two European matches away from the San Siro and fined £35,000 after similar crowd trouble at their Uefa Cup tie with Spanish side Alaves

What???

Who the hell will think its harsh? £130k probably only Vieris weekly wage. Thought the Italian league might have stepped in too.

A farce.

Let's not forget the lost revenue from playing to an empty stadium for a few games. It adds up. Though I'm not sure why anyone would want to go see a team that draws 3/4 of their games. :)
