Chicago Cubs

Are the Cubs going to be a disapointment again this year, I am affraid that they are going to be. If they don't figure out who is going to close, get rid of Sammy or patch things up, and put someone decent in Left field.

absorbentishe 01-14-2005 12:28 PM

Hard to say, they've lost some pitching, hitting, so their numbers won't be as good as last year, but they still have some good pitching. I think they'll be 2nd in the division behind St. Louis and miss the playoffs.

present_future 01-14-2005 12:32 PM

I don't think that this season should be too much of a dissapointment to Cubs fans, I mean they're so used to losing already.

In all seriousness, I see them finishing third in the division behind my Cardinals and the Astros.

Astros are going to stink the joint up this year. Lost Beltran, Miller, Kent, Berkman is hurt, and they're probably going to lose Clemens. I think last year was the high-water mark for the Astros for quite a while.

As for the Central, I foresee something like 1st-Cardinals 2nd-Cubs 3rd-Reds. After that, who knows, who cares.

pan6467 01-14-2005 01:53 PM

Ah silly fools.... underestimate Cincy as you did in 1990 (WIRE TO WIRE BAY BEEE, only team until then to do it in division ball). There is no doubt in my mind though that based on strong pitching the NL Central is by far the most even division in baseball where almost any team has a chance.

They need to pick up one more starter, which come spring training and the boys are hitting the cover off the ball Kearns/ or Dunn will provide us with.

On the other side the AL Central Indians are starting to look a little tougher and may take the weakest division.

Dingo2879 01-14-2005 02:22 PM

Even if Sammy is still on the squad, I still think we are going to compete. The starting pitching is still one of the best in baseball, and with Nomar, Ramirez, Lee, Patterson, and Barret I think this club can make some noise in the central.. and who knows, maybe Dempster will work out as a closer, maybe the bullpen will be more solid this year, and there is even a chance that shammy could have a break out year. He is in his contract year, so I have high hopes for the cubbies, and although they might not make the playoffs, I am positive they atleast finish about .500 again and that in itself is something to be happy about if your a Cubs fan.

Its funny how people think they will win the world series or they will finish at the bottom. I picked win the world series, but who knows??

Harry Cox 01-18-2005 04:48 PM

The only people picking the Cubs to finish at the bottom are either Cub haters or idiots who think that what happened 50+ years ago has any bearing whatsoever on today's team. The fact is that the Cubs have a lot of talent on the current team. Will they win it all? Will they even win the division? Who knows, but barring multiple major injuries they have enough firepower to at least keep themselves near the top ever if they underperform.

Cross-Over 01-18-2005 10:18 PM

If their pitching stays healthy, I think they will make it to the playoffs. By healthy, I mean maybe missing a few games. No team can afford to have their top two pitchers miss as many games as Prior and Wood missed last year.

onodrim 01-18-2005 10:32 PM

I have to vote "Win the World Series." What kind of Chicago resident would I be if I voted otherwise? :p

jbswads 02-17-2005 04:26 PM

It's hard to say what is going to happen to the Cubs this year. I am glad that Sammy is gone. All he did was bring the clubhouse down. The morale should be much higher now. And that alone wins baseball games. The Cubs have a lot of talent on the team and they look great on paper but it is hard to say what will happen once the season starts. But I still say GO CUBBIES!!!

heccubusiv 02-21-2005 06:58 PM

They better watch out, the Pirates are getting better and better every year and if they can hold a season together and not trade away everyone they will make a run. They have to have the most young talent in the league and just need them to stick together for longer than 2 months to play good baseball. For the past few seasons we have had great starts 8-3 and such then went on a west coast run and then go sub 500. Also we ahead of the astros at one point last year before we lost 20 or so in a row. The cubbies are weak this year and they should be afraid

betula 02-21-2005 07:05 PM

I have a feeling they'll just miss the playoffs. Good team, really strong starting pitching, but they don't have many throwers for the 8th and 9th innings. the offense will be decent, and if they pick up a good trade at the deadline like last year, they could make a wild card or division push.

zerosk8 02-25-2005 08:23 AM

GO CUBS GO!!....I always have faith in my cubbies...i know they can finish at the top of the division.....Im so happy that they signed Michael Barrett!! I think that he can be a cornerstone....him and Aramis Ramirez...don't worry cubs fans...we'll be just fine!!

soccerchamp76 02-26-2005 11:35 AM

Sosa was only part of the problem. The main problem is Baker and the rest of the Cubs management. It is wrong for everybody to blame the Cubs problems on one person.

Have faith though, for they will finish below the #1 team, the St. Louis Cardinals.

P.S. Zambrano is a chicken-shit player.
