Ugliest incident in sports.

What do you think? I can think of three.

1. McGahee (SP?) against Ohio State in the championship game. The way he broke that knee. Made me wince. Good to see him coming back strong.

2. That Goalie back in the day that got sliced with the skate.

3. The Lion's player that was paralyzed. He played about ten years ago. Shocking how quiet that stadium was.

Watching MNF some 20+ years ago (1983?) and watching replay after replay (from every angle possible in those days) of Joe Theisman busting his leg.

Watching Tom Browning pitch and in mid throw his arm snaps, (some what like Sid Vicious when his leg snapped in mid air coming off the rope).

Watching the Cleveland Browns play.

I could think of a few more....

That was a rough weekend.

Baseball players shooting roids then breaking homerun records of the guys that set them the old fashion way.

Leagues that go on strike for more money.

Fans that cant hold on to a cup of beer. And the players that go into the stands.

Pistons/Pacers Brawl was just ulgy.

Michigan State loseing to Michigan from a 21 point lead with 2 mins left on the clock. Game went into 3 overtimes and ended up being 45 - 37 UofM (my ass was sore after sitting in the big house that entire time)

I have to agree with two of yours, being:

2. That Goalie back in the day that got sliced with the skate.

3. The Lion's player that was paralyzed. He played about ten years ago. Shocking how quiet that stadium was. (that was truly a sad day, I was tearing up myself. What a horrible way to go)

And I would add the most recent incident in Detroit.

This basketball thing where the fans and players fought in the stands was none too pretty.

The goalie was Clint Malarchuk, who played for the Buffalo Sabres at the time of the accident. There's a pretty graphic picture HERE. I know I'll never forget that.

I'm pretty sure that was against Pittsburgh, right? For some reason, I also think Lemieux was on the breakaway and his skate cut Clint.

nope, it was against St. Louis and Steve Tuttle was the guy on the breakaway.

If we're talking about various snapped limbs in the NFL, I'll never forget the opening Monday night game, Labor Day 1994, Raiders vs. Niners and Napoleon McCallums leg breaking.

Also, I remember Moises Alou maybe 10 years ago, when he was on the Expos, sliding into 2nd base in St. Louis and dislocating his ankle. The ball got into center field and he tried to stand up and run but his foot was 180 degrees facing backwards.

How about Bertuzzi's sucker punch on Moore?

I mean I love the guy... Bertuzzi is one of my heroes... But, it was damn ugly and sad that something like that happened.

I was going to mention that as well. 2nd most horrific thing I've seen during a sporting event. I just mentioned this earlier in another thread, but Go For Wand breaking her leg during the Breeders Cup Distaff was the worst thing I've ever seen involving sports.

i had never heard of the goalie incident (dont watch too much hockey and was probably pretty young)...what happened to the guy? was he seriously injured/killed? did he play later in the season? later in the game? just interested here...trying to fill in the gaps

MArty Macsorley using his stick as a bat hitting Donald Brashears head was pretty nasty. Ditto with the Perezhgin incident where he made the opposing player convulse on the ice.

One of these things is not like the others

Bertuzzi, McSorley and Theisman.

And any and every instance of a fan/player fight. Dumbasses.

edit - a player on the opposing team in my rec. hockey league had some sort of seizure on the bench and died the next day in the hospital. He had just scored a goal that game, too. That really sucked.

I was thinking the same thing. I was about 12 at the time, but I can still see that knee bending the wrong way.

The hardest thing for me to watch was not that graphic. It was Hank Gathers of Loyola Marymount running down the basketball court and collapsing. What is bad is that you can pretty much tell that he is dead before he even hits the ground.

Sergei Zholtok of the Minnesota Wild who collapsed and died shortly after a game. T'was a shame, he was deeply involved in charity work. :(

i saw something like this a couple years ago at a Seattle Thunderbirds Game (WHL)
except the guy got cut on his head and it was during a huge brawl
id have to throw in another for the recent basketball event. that was pretty shitty

the little girl going to a Columbus Blue Jackets game on her birthday, getting hit in the face with a puck and then dying a few days later is as bad as it gets in my book.

February 18, 2001 - Dale Earnhardt killed on the final lap of the Daytona 500. That will FOREVER stick out in my mind, as the racing community lost one of the best racers...ever.

As far as the crushing deaths at stadiums...that's just fucking stupid. There ain't NO game THAT important. Never has been, never will be. I'll never understand riots after big games...ESPECIALLY when the home team wins!!!

The goalie getting cut by the skate across the neck...just gruesome.
John Smiley, Tony Saunders and 2 other pitchers I cannot name off the top of my head who broke their arm throwing a pitch during a game. People said it sounded like a bat hitting a ball. Sad thing is Saunders arm broke THREE different times after recovery attempts.

Few years back, Washington Huskies defensive end was paralyzed during a game after a big hit. He died a few years later due to complications with his injury. It's sad to see such a young player go.

The worst I've ever seen was Bryce Florie taking a liner off the eye area. The McGahee injury was bad too.

Aw man! That Clint Malarchuk incident looks horrible! Did he live though the slicing? Yee! It makes me shudder thinking about falling down while ice skating, and just having my hand sliced... think about your throat! MAN! *shudders*

I remember watching this game on TV when I was younger and being totally freaked out by it, we didn't have to wear neck guards back then in minor hockey in my hometown, shortly after this incident we all wore neck guards.

In this time of sports where people are willing to intentionally willing to miss a shot, just to get a triple double (alla Bobby Sura) and pull out a cell phone after a touchdown just to look cool (see Joe Horn); its refreshing for me to learn about players who sacrifice their all just to play the game they love.

In my opinion, no one fits into this more than former Quebec and Buffalo Sabers goalie Clint Malarchuk. Some of you avid sports fans may have seen the Sportscenter story about him, but for you've who have not; I wish to enlighten you upon this amazing person.
Clint Malarchuk was born in 1961 in Alberta, Canada. He was selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the 4th round in 1981. In 1987 he was traded to the Capitals and in 1989 he was traded to the Buffalo Sabers. It is this where his life took a tragic turn for the worse...

In 1989, only 16 days after he was traded, during a game against the St. Louis Blues. On a routine play; St. Louis right winger Steve Tuttle was charging toward Malarchuk with defenseman Uwe Krupp closing in from behind. As the puck flashed through the crease, Krupp grabbed Tuttle and Tuttle's leg kicked into the air, his skate blade slicing through the exposed flesh under Malarchuk's mask.

The skate blade of Tuttle slashed Malarchuk's exterior jugular vein in his neck. It was this accident that caused goalies wear neck protectors. In seconds there was a pool of blood on the ice so large it filled the entire crease. During this whole time, Malarchuk remained conscious. It is because of this, that he remembers the words that he spoke after the accident. Malarchuk flung off his mask and collapsed to the ice in a pool of his own blood, fearing that he was about to die. He asked the trainer:

"Am I going to live?''

Malarchuk struggled to stay conscious, sensing that if he did pass out he'd never wake up. Aware that his mother had been watching the game on TV, he had an equipment manager call and tell her he loved her. Then he asked for a priest.

Something in his mind was telling him to get off the ice, "because I didn't want to die on the ice. I was saying prayers. I was scared."

"I did think I was done," said Malarchuk 13 years later, "Somewhere I'd heard that if you cut your jugular vein you've got a matter of minutes, like three minutes. I was going through the minutes preparing to die. I thought I had just three minutes to live and I've got a lot of repenting to do in three minutes."

The sight was so grizzly that 2 spectators suffered heart attacks and 3 of Malarchuk's teammates vomited while still on the ice.

It was estimated that if the skate hit 1/8 inch higher on Malarchuk's jugular, he would have been dead within 2 minutes. In the dressing room and on his way to the hospital, doctors spent 90 minutes and used over 300 stitches to close the wound.

But Malarchuk's story did not stop there.

In only 3 months, Malarchuk returned to a standing ovation.

As if Malarchuk's jugular scare weren't enough, the Buffalo goalie suffered another close call on Jan. 27, 1992. On that day, following a Super Bowl party, he mixed pain medication with the alcohol he had been drinking at the party. Malarchuk had been given the prescription for pain killers to treat a stomach illness that he contracted on Jan. 23, 1992. The stomach trouble had landed him in a St. Louis hospital. Three days later, he had three or four beers as he watched the Super Bowl in Buffalo. He then went home and took his medication with another alcoholic drink, figuring it would make him drowsy and help him sleep through the night. Instead, he managed to poison himself. During the time, Malarchuk feel into a deep depression, and his unknown Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder caused him to have many sleepless nights. He was determined to get sleep; at that point he didn't matter if he woke up.

He lost consciousness and was rushed to the Erie County Medical Center. Malarchuk called the mixing of drugs and alcohol the "most traumatic experience I've ever had. The biggest mistake of my life."

In such current times where players wont sign because they want an extra $2 million on their contracts, shoot at the opposing team's basket just to get a rebound, or almost refuse to play due to the fact that their personal trainer is not allowed in the locker room; it's a breath of fresh air to know that some people are still willing to sacrifice everything to the game they love.

Pieter van Zyl coming onto the field and attacking referee David McHugh. The guy had a grudge against him for years, it's pretty sad.

Silent Jay... thanks for getting that up there. Glad to hear he's alright. Man, to say that'd be freaking scary would be an understatement! :-O I hope I never go through something like that...

His knee went about 90 degrees the wrong way, it was horrific. I couldn't even imagine the pain.

Being from Buffalo I remember vividly when Malarchuk got cut. His injury may indeed be one of the worst since he was nearly dead by the time the trainers even got to him.

Alex Zanardi losing both of his legs was also very horrific and a truly terrible incident.

Steve Yeager of the LA Dodgers in 1976 gets hit in the neck with the jagged end of a broken bat while on deck. Much like the hockey guy, Yeager introduced the neck gaurd that all catchers wear today.

I remember watching a Bears game many years ago, when a wide receiver was running a pass route and collapsed and died. I remember the announcers, seeing him down, assumed tha Butkus had hit him. As they we wheeling him off, his arm flopped and the announcer said he was waving to the crowd, but he was already dead.

Didn't happen during the match itself, but when the Colombian Andres Escobar was murdered by sports "fan" back in his country because he scored in his own goal in the match agaisnt the States.
That was sad.
