Bowl Game Predictions

Make picks on all the bowl games. After the results come in... we'll tally up the scores and see who made the best predictions.

Quote:

7 pts for picking an unfavored team to win a BCS game

5 pts for picking a favored team in a BCS game

5 pts for picking unfavored regular bowl team

3 pts for picking a favored regular bowl team

points will be awarded based on which team is favored to win, not whether or not they cover the spread.

Who is to judge which team is favoured?

irateplatypus 12-08-2004 12:07 AM

i was counting on taking the vegas line unless there is some list of predictions published by the AP or USA today closer to the games.

The_Dude 12-08-2004 03:07 AM

texas > blue
ttu > cal

The_Dude 12-08-2004 03:08 AM

and of course, OU > USC.

pac10 is almost as bad as big east =D

warrrreagl 12-08-2004 06:18 AM

I usually do pretty well with bowl predictions, because I always pick the team that has the better scoring defense. "White" means I got it right; "red" means I missed it; "yellow" means the game hasn't come up yet.

several issues:
1. there are multiple Vegas lines (e.g., Stardust, Mirage, etc.)... which one will be used, and when will it be used (see item #3)?
2. some of the lines are either off the board or haven't been set (e.g., Marshall-Cincinnati, UConn-Toledo).
3. the closer you get to game-time, the more the lines tend to move. a team that is currently listed as the favorite may suddenly become the underdog, or vice-versa (e.g., Okie St. is currently -1.5 over Ohio St.; by game-time, the Buckeyes will likely be favored). how would these types of situations be scored?
4. what's the deadline for making picks?

warrrreagl 12-08-2004 09:54 AM

Since irateplatypus started this thread, I'll let him pick the odds source. It's not like there's any cash involved, or anything...

yeah, i didn't think this would be such an issue a month away from the games... but this is what we'll do.

let's just use Anderson & Hester's BCS rankings. it's one of the computer polls that the BCS uses to figure the official rankings.

so... don't worry about odds or spreads. if the anderson & hester computer rates a team higher on their Dec 6th list, they are the favored team. this way we'll have a common set of ranking criteria to start off with and one that will be static throughout the rest of the year.

the only statute of limitations is that all submissions must be made the day before the start of the first bowl game. feel free to edit your submissions until then.

you've obviously not watched many pac-10 games. and USC is going to win the Orange Bowl by at least 10.

does that account for their loss to usc last year?

I hope everyone that picked Troy over Northern Illinois is wrong... My Huskies are gonna pull through you wait and see

Avail 12-15-2004 04:29 PM

Top three bowl games to watch in my opinion:
USC and OU
Boise St. and Louisville
Texas Tech and Cal

clockworkgreen 12-15-2004 06:41 PM

VT is going to give Auburn a run. They might not win, but it'll be damn close.

Avail 12-15-2004 08:21 PM

I don't know about that, Auburn is coming into this game trying to prove that they should be playing USC in the Orange Bowl. Hard to tell on that game.

clockworkgreen 12-21-2004 05:42 PM

But they're playing a very, very underrated VT team, who have reeled off 8 straight wins.

And while they had a good season, you shouldn't be scared of a team that beat Louisiana Monroe, Miss. St., The Citadel (?!?!?), Louisiana Tech, Kentucky, and Mississippi for 6 of their wins.

Avail 12-21-2004 08:22 PM

But then again they have beat Tennessee twice, Georgia, and LSU.

Anyhow, Syracuse got their behinds handed to them today. :( I thought they'd do a little better considering they were coming off a win against BC.

Avail 12-27-2004 02:58 PM

Good job Bond, the only one of us who chose Fresno State over Virginia. That was an interesting game to say the least.

thanks, but I'm making up for it with my pick of Toledo in the Motor City Bowl.

Avail 12-27-2004 08:25 PM

Yeah, today wasn't a very good day for my picks. 0 out of 2.

Chemical Smoo 12-28-2004 10:32 AM

I like your Org State pick tonight, but not too sure about the Iowa State/Miami O game... I will prolly stay away from that one. Good Luck

Avail 12-29-2004 12:35 AM

I'm not doing too hot. I guess I should do a little research before predicting next time.

For example, Toledo's QB had screws in his throwing hand which hindered him majorly.

I've only gotten four predictions right.

that's one of the downsides of trying to predict the outcome of games three weeks before they occur.

btw: yeah, yeah... hindsight's 20/20... whatever... but I can't believe I predicted the MAC to have a 4-1 bowl record!

Avail 12-29-2004 03:09 PM

Plus Notre Dame players didn't even want to play in the bowl game since Willingham was fired.

Haha, I gave them a 4-1 record too. I was 50/50 on the Miami game and just picked them randomly. I didn't really know much about either team.

bond007 12-31-2004 07:37 AM

irateplatypus... good call on the Holiday Bowl. you were the only one of us to correctly predict that Texas Tech would kick Cal's ass!

Avail 12-31-2004 09:17 AM

Heh, I felt obliged to pick New Mexico in the Emerald bowl considering I used to live right next to the campus in Albuquerque.

Skerious 12-31-2004 11:29 AM

all i know is that Miami better beat the Crocs!!!!!

Avail 01-01-2005 12:21 AM

Anybody been able to scrape Mobo123 off the floor yet?

Gatorade Frost 01-01-2005 01:29 PM

I just got back from the Cottonbowl and I can't describe it as anything but brutal. A&M's ass got handed to them, but as life goes they fumbled that too.

bond007 01-02-2005 02:19 PM

woo-hoo! Vince Young was simply amazing... way to go Longhorns!

Justsomeguy 01-03-2005 12:58 AM

Disappointing bowl year so far in my opinion. I watched the Texas-Michigan rose bowl, and I must say that I have never been so bored watching such a tight game. What is the point of the Auburn game? I see analysts on sports stations commenting that if Auburn loses it will prove the BCS got it right. In my opinion, it proves jack shit. People just do not realize that the problem is not whether or not the BCS puts the 2 best teams in the championship. The problem is that it still does give every team in the nation an equal shot to contend..which was a primary problem with tbe old system.

I was happy to see Saban go out with a loss. The only thing he ever had working for him was his ability to recruit. If Dinardo actually attempted to recruit, I guarantee the LSU fans would pick him any day over Saban. At the games the crowd hated him because of his shitty coaching decisions. I'm glad his coaching abilities were illustrated in the Iowa loss.

California beat one ranked team all year and that team pulled off a squeaker against Purdue. I don't know why people expected them to dominate so much. Was it because they played USC so well? If so, what about Stanford and UCLA?

So far, the only games I've enjoyed have been the Cotton Bowl and Fiesta Bowl. Even though the games were blow outs, it was exciting to see Tennessee shut up all the critics. Also, Utah's win really proved they could contend with top 3 teams.

bond007 01-04-2005 08:59 PM

well, at 48-10... I'd say it's pretty safe to say that USC's gonna win... so, here's the unofficial results of the Bowl Game Predictions:

bond007 (21) -- 91 points
indebut (17) -- 73 points
hokieian (17) -- 67 points
funkeodor (16) -- 66 points
warrrreagl (15) -- 65 points
quicksteal (15) -- 59 points
irateplatypus (14) -- 58 points
avail (13) -- 57 points

NOTE: the number of correct predictions is listed in parenthesis (out of 28 total games).

indebut 01-07-2005 10:58 AM

I'll take second....helluva job bond!

bond007 01-07-2005 09:26 PM

thank you!

warrrreagl 01-09-2005 06:30 AM

Yeah, great job, Bond. So much for my "Scoring Defense" system. I barely broke .500.

And I still think Auburn could have beaten Southern Cal.

Avail 01-11-2005 05:25 PM

Haha, my predictions sucked this year. I did fairly better last year, getting over 70% right. I'm under 50% this year.
