Yankees vs. Red Sox
Is there a greater rivalry in all of sports? I can see some Laker vs. Celtics argument, but these two teams have hated each other for far longer.
I am a huge Yankees fan, and HATE the Sox with all of my heart. I hope they lose every game from here until the end of time. There is not even a single player I respect or like on the Red Sox. They will play well until August and then they will collapse like they always do! They SUCK and will never win a World Series again. At this pace they are lucky to make the playoffs. |
I am a HUGE RED SOX FAN and yes I HATE HATE HATE the evil empire. It is a great rivalry however and one that I hope continues. As far as winning or losing don't open your trap too much.. your mighty yankees are in a bit of a slump right now. Wonder who they are in a battle for first with?? UMM THAT'S RIGHT THE RED SOX :D
|
I just hope you are watching the game right now :)
My greatest Red Sox memory is the one of Bill Buckner going to field the ground ball in 86. Awesome! :) I am just kidding with you. My father is a huge Yanks fan, but my mother is a Sox fan. For Father's day (a little early) I got my father 4 box seats to the Sox Yanks game on the 28th of this month at Yankee stadium. |
It is a great rivaly but it really loses something since the Red Sox Suck. I mean if there was a shot that the Sox would do something it may be more excitong, but they have not won a WS since 1918 - 1918!!!!! .
There is certainly a lot of emotion though. Boomer rocks. I am listening to the game right now over mlb.com |

Maybe the soxcan develop the next greatest baseball player of all time and then sell him to the Yanks for $250k.
Oh forget it - they already did that. . . |
heh at least we had the greatest hitter of all time..
on a side note.. I wonder if the Dodgers would have stayed in Brooklyn if that would be a bigger rivalry? They didn't really give much comp to the yanks..but they were close.. |
Bosox fan here, $$$$$$$$$= Stankees
always has been about the money always will be untill salary cap. And before anyone gets their pinstriped panties in a hiffer, let me present the best " it is ALL about the money arguement" What happened during the years when CBS owned the Stankees? How many world series wins? 0. Why? They didnt spend any money. |
cardinals / cubs is a pretty good and friendlier rivalry

I know a Sox fan is not complaining about money. You guys have a pretty high payroll too. Difference is that Soriano, Jeter, Pettite, Williams, and Posada were all developed in the Yankee farm system. Sure we have to pay to keep them, but it is not like the Yanks don't have any development. Look at who they have traded out of their system...Lowell and Milton to name two. The Sox spend money just like the Yankees, they just spend it in the wrong places. I guess letting Clemens go was a good move, huh?
|
bigblue,
50+million buys alot of talent, we are talking about Soriano, Jeter, Pettite, Williams, and Posada salaries, now add them to alot of teams and you have instant contender. Oh Soriano played his "minor league" ball in Japan. |
Yeah we spend some money..and most of it seems to be in the wrong places. The yanks are high and above any and all in the spending category though. Soriano isn't a product of the farm system. The money that we (sox) have spent in the last year has made the team better IMHO. Add a few more pitchers and we'll be where we need to be.
|
Soriano was bought as a minor leaguer for like 1 million. The Yankees saw what otehr teams did not. I bet any team in the majors would have spent that money knowing what they do now.
He also played for many years in the Yankee farm system. I remember a couple of years back (2000 maybe) the Sox had the highest payroll in the majors to start the season. They spend a ton of money and have nothing to show for it. The Yankees make a profit every year and have to compete with another baseball team as well as other sports. What do the Sox have to compete with in Boston? Point is, that Yankees have a better orginization and anyone could spend the money if they wanted to. |

The mets spend $185mil for teams that suck. It is deeper than money. You cannot sign a bunch of Jackasses like Mo Vaughn and expect to win.
|
The Yankees have to compete with other sports and another baseball team? LOL that's funny. The mets sucks.. the knicks suck, the rangers suck beyond comprehension so I wouldn't really say they have alot to compete with in that area. At least in Boston we have to compete with the Bruins and the Celtics  The Mets, Knicks and Rangers have huge payrolls and they still suck. I don't care how much money a team spends, I'm just a Red Sox fan and I will always hate the Yankees.. plain and simple. Another thing, this curse of the Bambino.. what a load of shit. There is no curse. People are so consumed in this thing.. it pisses me off. At least with Boston I don't have to worry about all the commercial bullshit either. Hell the Yankees are the biggest fad.. everyone wants to wear their logo. Why? Because they win all the time, nope.. just because they are "in style" most people that wear the crap couldn't even tell you a single thing about the Yankees. 98% of Boston fans can give you a full discourse on the history of the team. Sure there are some loyal fans in New York.. but we'll see what happens when the yankees hit a dry spell and don't win championships for a while..which will happen soon ;)
|
It was so good to watch the Red Sox beat up the Yankees today in Yankee stadium. The yankees are in a slump aww where are all the "fans" now. The Red Sox are 2 1/2 games up in first place. Both will be in the preseason.. and I'm willing to bet that the Red Sox come out of the division if we keep hitting like we are now. Early? Yeah I know but I can hope right? :D
|
I am still here, and guess what...every year for the last three or four the Sox have been on top at one point through the season. You know what always happens...the CHOKE!!!! There are a ton of loyal Yankee fans. I have been watching the Yanks since I can remember. My father is a Yanks fan, and his father was. Here are who the Yankees have to compete with for headlines:
Nets Devils Giants Jets Mets Islanders Rangers Knicks Not all of those teams suck, and most have been very good over a ten year span. The Knicks, Devils, Nets, Rangers, Giants have all been to their championship game over the past ten years. How many NBA finals or NHL Finals have Boston teams been to over the past ten years? The Pats are the team with the most recent success. The Red Sox have competed with the Yankees in payroll over the past five years, and while the Yanks are a little higher, their success is immeasurably higher. The spend money, but more often than not they spend it in the right places. Tonight's game should be fun and I plan to watch. My father is going to the game with frint row seats on the first base dugout tonight as a father's day present from me. |
I will grant you that we choke alot.. and the yanks have had great success..but.. george is restless.. something is going to happen.. hopefully for the worst :p
|
I think this rivalry is the greatest in sports, and each team is better off when the other is playing well too.
I hope they don't trade for another bat and they just ride it out while Bernie and Nick Johnson are out. George is an ass about a ton of things and I dislike everything about him other than his desire to win. He underminds his manager, coaches and players at every turn. I am glad that he will spend the money though. There are plenty of teams that could spend the money and don't that it is nice to have him care about winning. |
You're right this is the greatest rivalry in sports..and each plays better when the other is playing well. I wish the Red Sox would actually spend something on pitching. I hate all of our starters except for Pedro of course. we need a decent closer and some relief.. our bats are fine..(up until the last two games) Nomar lost his hit streak damn yankees :p
|
Where in NC do you live? I assume Charlotte from your post about the Panthers in another thread. I am leaving for Charlotte at like 5:45am tomorrow. I live in Raleigh currently.
|
By the way, your Sox are not going quitely into the night like I had hoped. I am starting to get pissed!!!
|
As an Orioles fan, I root for the team that is lagging to keep the "games behind" lower. Tell me THAT isn't a sad statement.
I just got back from the Yard, where the O's performed well again tonight. It was a great game! :-) |
Quote:
what a great game the other night.. we killed your precious "save king" sure we lost but umm the ump missed a great call.. oh well I don't think the whole game was his fault and I don't blame the officials ever, nonetheless George and the entire front office was sweatin' bullets |
Another one in the NHL would be Toronto-Montreal.
This year, 6 times!!! |
Another sox fan here. And friendly rivalrys suck. Where's the fun without batteries being chucked at the away team? Concerning the money issue, Pedro said it best when he said "George can buy and sell the whole league but he can't buy fear to put in my heart." Damn straight.

Yes, the Yankees spend money. And now, we also give EVERY team in the league money to help you try to beat us. When the other owners decide to piss it away on shitty players, or worse, not use it on baseball at all, then it's not our fault. The Yankees sign players to high salaries, but if they don't perform, they're gone. And for my special friends, the Sox fans, we have the same rivalry a hammer and nail have. Let me refresh your memory. Quote:

Having grown up in Winter Haven, Fla. in the 70s, and spending my springs watching the Sox get ready for the year, my heart will always be theirs!
|
It's hard to make an arguement for it to be the worst in sports because there is no real way to compare. But in baseball, it obviously is the biggest.
For Football it would have to be the Packers and the Bears, for Hockey, up in the air, as of late the Red Wings and the Avs, for all time, probably the Maple Leafs against everyone, for basketball, the Lakers and the Celtics obviously win out. |
All I ask is that the Red Sox win the World Series once in my lifetime.....is that too much to ask?
|
The time will come. Someday we'll act all smug like the yankees fans and we'll cherish it much more then any other team could even imagine (except maybe the Cubs).
|
Mikey, you raise many, many valid, good points. However, it is my duty, as a Red Sox fan, to ignore them completly while I fervently wish that they win. That said, we'll see about this year. We'll talk in October, when one of us will get to say, "Told ya so". Probably you.
|
it is a great rivalry, but in recent years it has been pretty lopsided.

Sox fans, HERE IS HIS ARCHIVE where you will find much, much more Anti-Yankee material to keep yourselves warm during the long, cold winter. Happy reading! -Mikey |
Thanks Mikey. It's not that I really hate the Yankees, it just turns out that they're more like the scapegoats for the Red Sox constantly sucking.
Sox in '03! I hope. |
Lifetime Yankee fan here. All I have to say is "1918 1918 1918 1918 1918!"
|
Byung-Hyun Kim !!!!!!! Maybe my favorite closer besides Rivera. Thanks for making this trade Epstein. Really. This was a smart move if you want to win the pennant.

$185 million payroll this year (ith Benefits), then next closest team is the mets at something like $116m. But its not about the $$$. |
All I want/need to say is "NOMAH IS BETTER."

i just bought a hat from dunkin donuts' "the 100 year rivalry" boston vs. new york

Posada Catching Petitte SP Rivera RP Jeter SS Soriano 2b Bernie Baseball CF The core of this team is home grown and came up through their minor league system. They just pay to KEEP their good young players and then they build around them. Also - that thing about Soriano is a cop out. The A's are weak iof they actually said that which I am sure they did not. |
George Steinbrener (spelled right? I don't care) is the anti-christ of baseball. Bring on the Red Sox to take him down.
|
The RED SOX FANS are complaining about the YANKEES not being home grown?
HELLO! Pedro Martinez (Dodgers) Manny Ramierez (Indians) Todd Walker (Twins) John Burkett (Giants) Tim Wakefield (Pirates) Robert Person (Mets) Derek Lowe (Mariners) Doug Mirabelli (Giants) Kevin Millar (Marlins) Damian Jackson (Indians) Jeremy Giami (Royals) Gabe Kapler (Tigers) Bill Mueller (Giants) Johnny Damon (Royals) David Ortiz (Twins) YOUR ENTIRE FRIKKIN' BULLPEN!!! Your homegrown talent on your roster is IN TOTAL: Nomar Casey Fossum Trot Nixon Jason Varitek THAT'S IT! So don't come griping to Yankee fans about "buying" a team. You're just as guilty of it, if not moreso, so get off your circa-1918 milk carton and go cry about Bill Buckner or Mike Torrez or "Hung One" Kim. And you know what? Even if you were to somehow WIN the World Series (by some miracle of GOD), you'd still need to win it another TWENTY-THREE times to even have ANY bragging rights over the Yanks. So until no less than the year 2026, SHUT YOUR FREAKIN' MOUTHS, you whiny buncha bean-eaters! |

And it's Steinbrenner. Big Stein to you, pal. |

More like, looking for the acknowledgement that there is a big financial advantage to the Yankees. It has nothing to do with "cheating" or not following the rules (they definitely are following the rules). I don't care where a player is developed, if you have "up the middle" --- Jeter, Williams, Posada, Mo, Pettite all making $10m+ per year, then you add in Clemens, Mussina, Giambi at over $10m per year to that - then still have money to waste on Contreras and Drew Henson - it is a huge advantage period. |
What happened when CBS owned the stankees? Nothing
Why? They didnt spend any money so yankee fans just stay on your high horse and keep believing it is not about the money, you think red sox fans are they only ones complaining about georigie porgie and his huge pocket book. all of baseball is complaining about it, but just keep looking at the baseball world through your pin-stripe glasses. |
So how did the Angels win the World Series last year smarty?
How do the Mets end up in last every year despite having the 2nd highest payroll? |
New York Mets = $116,253,927 = 2nd highest payroll = Last in their division, 3rd worst record in NL.
Texas Rangers = $106,277,880 = 4th highest payroll = Last in their division, 4th worst record in AL. Kansas City Royals = $48,475,322 = 4th lowest payroll = First in their division, 5th best record in AL. -Mikey |
As Big Stein pointed out in an interview yesterday, Ain't nobody won nothing yet.
|
Doesn't matter, cause the Giants are winning the World Series this year

Speaking of the Royals...
Since they joined the league in 1969, they've won 7 division titles, made 7 playoff appearances, won 1 pennant, and one World Series. In the same time, Boston has won 5 division titles, made 7 playoff appearances, won 2 pennants, but NO World Series. So who's had more to show since 1969? I'll answer for you. It's the YANKEES! 12 division titles, 13 playoff appearances, 8 pennants, 6 World Series. But hey, take heart. The Sox have something the Yankees will NEVER have. A cute and cuddly mascot! http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/bos/pho...eam_mascot.jpg -Mikey |
Damn you wally!

What a steal that was. |
Don't forget to add Scott Williamson (Reds).
-Mikey |
Yanks lead is now 7 games, the biggest it's been all season. Tonight the Sox blew a 6-2 lead and lost 8-6. They left SEVENTEEN men on base.
Why? Have the Yankees "bought" another one? Must be all those late-season acquisitions, like always. Fuckin' Yanks. It's that damn Aaron Boone. He's hitting .154 since coming to NY. Oh wait, it must not be him. Well, David Delucci is hitting .182. Wait, it must be Jesse Orosco, with his 12.27 ERA. Ah! Gotta be Home-run-do Benitez. Shit... umm, yeah. I know! Could it be because the entire baseball world that was so convinced Boston had finally built a Yankee-proof pitching staff was WRONG? Scott Sauerbeck: 0-0, 0 Sv, 4.05 ERA. Scott Williamson: 0-1, 5.40 ERA. Todd Jones: 6.64 ERA. Jeff Suppan: 0-1, 8.82 ERA. What a bunch of great pickups. Who blew it for the Sox tonight? Here's a hint: his initials are Byung-Hyun Kim. If he keeps pitching like he did tonight, the Sox won't have to worry about how he'll perform in the playoffs. Sox are now 2 games behind Oakland for the AL wild card. It's not just the pitchers' fault, the "best offense in baseball", that hit .308 in May, .315 in June and .289 in July, is hitting a whopping .247 in August. In other words... THEY'RE CHOKING! You can't blame this on the payroll. The Yankees spark plug since coming to the team has been Karim Garcia (.343 BA with NY, .944 August SLG%) who makes less than $1M a year. Big names like Mondesi, Zeile, and Ventura, Benitez are gone (and thus, their salary hits don't count.) Jeter's hitting .321, but he's overrated. Nomar's better. Right? We all know the real reason for this... http://www.1918redsox.com/images/dugout.jpg -Mikey |
