DENVER (AP) -- Carmelo Anthony was cited for marijuana possession before getting on a team flight last week, but the Denver Nuggets' star says the drug was left in his backpack by a friend.

Anthony was issued a summons last Friday at Denver International Airport; he flew with his teammates to Milwaukee for the next day's preseason game but didn't play.

Anthony's attorney, Daniel Recht, said the marijuana was left in the bag by an out-of-town friend who borrowed the backpack last week.

``The friend obviously uses marijuana and left a small amount in the backpack when he returned it to Carmelo,'' Recht said Thursday. ``Carmelo had no idea there was any marijuana in the backpack.''

Anthony was charged with possessing less than 1 ounce of marijuana, a petty offense with a maximum $100 fine and no jail time. He was in Los Angeles for a preseason game Thursday against the Clippers and not immediately available for comment.

Recht said he met with a city attorney and requested the citation be dismissed. He also said the friend acknowledged the marijuana was his and would come forward to accept responsibility.

Recht also said he received a letter from Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe verifying Anthony passed four random drug tests last season and another two weeks ago. The letter also said tests from U.S. Olympic Committee at the Athens Games this summer came back negative.

Anthony also was involved in a scuffle at a New York bar in September
I don't know if I buy his story. If you ask me, it's just another case where a professional athlete will be let go with just a slap on the wrist.

I think the fight at the bar was because someone spat on his girlfriend MTY VJ La La

People who leave marijuana in your backpack are not your friends...

oh carmello isn't squeaky clean anymore.

Jimellow 10-21-2004 07:33 PM

The fact that Kiki has data showing Melo is drug free, and his friend is fessing up to be the one owning the weed makes it highly unlikely anything will happen to Melo.

I don't even think his image will be tarnished, as smoking weed isn't really looked down on in general IMO.

If the "friend" wasn't a friend earlier, he is now for bailing Melo out (assuming it wasn't really his). Either that, or he is an acquaintance that just got a bit wealthier in the last week.

It may not be looked down by society, but it IS looked down on by any potential sponsors.

In my opinion, you're getting paid several million a year, for fuck's sake wait until you retire, then do all the drugs you want.

I agree with this, but I also wonder.. Seeing that quite a few young adults in America smoke weed, would a product endorsed by a known pot smoker successfully target those consumers that do smoke weed?

For instance (assuming advertising works), a collge kid might decide that since Carmello also smokes weed, he can relate and is like him, and thus may buy his product because of this.

I certainly agree that drug use is definitely looked down upon by the bigger sponsors, but I wonder if smoking could be a positive selling point to a certain percentage of America's young consumers...

Thoughts?

^^ plus mcdonalds would want him as a spokesperson. Got the munchies? grab a quarter pounder!

toverfie 10-22-2004 11:31 AM

I heard that he will still face prosecution even though someone else signed an affadavit swearing that it was theirs....ironically, pot is not on the nba banned substance list....guess that just goes to show why we need unions......

pan6467 10-22-2004 01:13 PM

Just shaking my head laughing..... these days athletes and celebrities of any persuasion can get away with ANYTHING. While the rest of us "citizens" would get fucked.

Someone please explain why we pay these people millions and millions of dollars while true heroes can barely afford to make a living and are for the most part law abiding people.

docbungle 10-22-2004 01:19 PM

Just like when Mike Anderson of the Broncos blamed it on "secondhand smoke."

Because true heroes don't videotape themselves and flaunt their actions on TV for us to watch.

JackBurton 10-22-2004 04:21 PM

Gee. A friend left it in his bag. Thats original.

Melo is an idiot. His actions at the Olympics showed what kind of attitude he carries.

quest1mark 10-23-2004 08:50 AM

he and ricky williams can be endorsed for high times, funyons, and late night fast food restaurants.

high_jinx 10-24-2004 02:06 AM

the guy had 6 drug tests in the last year and came up squeaky. give him a break and wait till he tests positive like lamar odom did several times.

It looks like pro athelete or not, the maximum penalty would be a 100.00 dollar fine. So in this instance no special treatment is required. All states should be so lenient.

it's so made up, sigh it's ridiculous what celebrities can fabricate when they are famous.

DJ Happy 11-09-2004 05:23 AM

I wish my friends would leave bags of weed in my backpack.

renaldorick 11-14-2004 08:25 AM

I know - it's pretty funny. First he plays like crud in the olympics, pouts the whole time, part of a team of "all stars" that gets routed, cries about larry brown when he returns, then gets busted for pot, and plays like garbage for the first few games for the nugs. Sure, against the pistons he was on fire, moving without the ball, creating his own shot, cleaning up the trash, doing the little things... but it seams he pouts a lot, and resorts to just standing around watching the ball. I think he is kind of a difficult coaching project.
