philosophy of football

if i was the gm of a footblall organization

my main focus would be the offensive line

rounds 1 though 5 of the draft all i would draft would be offensive lineman. (exceptions might be made if i really liked a certain player). in 5 years, enough of my picks would pan out that i would have the best offensive line in football.
i would pay as much money as i had for the best offensive line coach
i would filnd offensive coordinator who utilized offensive line

my reasons:
quaterback is better w/ more time
runningback quality is less important if your line is opening holes as big as kansas
time of pocession wins ball games
demoralizing to other team when ball is being rammed down their throat
lineman are less expensive than running backs and qb's

everything else i would spend on free agent's and quality veterans who believed in winning and had good heart. having a beard or a fro would help in you being selected.

What if you are the Patriots? I don't think they have a single first-day draft pick on their line.

It isn't when you get a player, it's WHO you get.

Now, when you have a chance to draft a Jonathon Ogdan or Orlando Pace top 5, you do it. But don't just flat out say "this is what I'm doing and that is it", because that is how teams waste their picks.

Look at the Ravens. Their drafting philosophy under Ozzie Newsom has been Best Player Available, and look at how they have done. Only one first round pick of theirs is no longer with the team: Duane Starks. They drafted Ogdan over Lawrence Phillips when they already had a left tackle and needed a running back. They drafted Suggs last year despite their need for a quarterback or receiver. In 2001 and 2002 they had late first-round picks, and got Todd Heap and Ed Reed respectively.

The only time they have really streached is trading picks to draft Boller last year, but he's still the QB of the future (after failing to trade up and pick Leftwich).

those systems you speak of are good systems and are proven winning systems. but just because certain systems are succesful doesn't mean other systems will not be. my goal is to have the best offensive line in football and it might not be possible if i don't draft offensive line 1 through 5. if i do draft 1 through 5 offensive lineman my odds of having the best offensive line go up significantly. not only that but those lineman will be young and less prone to injury. and as i said if there was a certain player that i really liked i would change my philosophy for 1 pick. hopefully i would have an overabundance of lineman so i could trade lineman to teams like the dolphins who desperately need line help. this in turn would give me more picks in the draft or a quality veteran to fill a role. the patriots also proved you can pickup veterans relatively cheaply through free agency to solidify positions on your team that are lacking. Corry Dillon and Rodney Harrison come to mind. and i know they have done that w/ countless others.
