Funny, I saw him on SportsCenter the other day saying that the Cowboys were going to be his team this season.

Oh well, it will be nice seeing Vinny play once again.

Cowboys Send Last Years Starting QB Packing

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

In a stunning move that likely pushes 17-year veteran Vinny Testaverde to the top of the team's depth chart, the Dallas Cowboys released Quincy Carter on Wednesday.

Sources told ESPN and ESPN.com that Carter recently failed a team-administered drug test. Carter already was in the NFL substance-abuse program, having tested positive for an illegal substance in the past, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Carter, the starting quarterback for the last three seasons, left the Cowboys' training camp in Oxnard, Calf., early Wednesday. The release of Carter is expected to be official later Wednesday afternoon and addressed by coach Bill Parcells at his daily press briefing between practices. Owner Jerry Jones has confirmed the move.

A three-year veteran, Carter had started 31 games in his career, including all 16 in 2003, when he led Dallas to a 10-6 record and a wild card spot, the first postseason appearance by the team since 1999. The former University of Georgia standout was a second-round pick in the 2001 draft.

"I think I probably speak for all the guys of how disappointed we are that Quincy is no longer going to be part of this team," Testaverde said. "But at the same time we know we have to look forward to getting things down and go out and win games."

After practice, Parcells gave the players some sort of explanation about Carter's departure, but players declined to comment on the discussion.

Carter's career has been a roller coaster, with flashes of brilliance often followed by very uneven performances. Just days ago, when asked about his starter for this season, Parcells acknowledged that Carter had "a leg up" on the No. 1 job.

What changed that, at least for now, is unknown.

In his three NFL seasons, Carter completed 507 of 902 passes for 5,839 yards, with 29 touchdown passes, 36 interceptions and a passer rating of 70.0. He threw for 3,302 yards last season, his best year in the league.

Testaverde, 40, was signed by the Cowboys in the spring after the New York Jets released him for salary cap reasons. Testaverde played for Parcells in New York and, even before the Jets freed him, it was obvious he was headed to Dallas for a reunion with the coach.

The 17-year veteran has completed 3,334 of 5,925 passes for 40,943 yards, and he has 251 touchdown passes and 235 interceptions.

The other two quarterbacks on the roster are rookie Drew Henson, the former Michigan star who in February abandoned his pursuit of a baseball career with the New York Yankees to return to football, and second-year pro Tony Romo.

Hopefully their running game will carry them.

Out of playoff race in 5....4....3...

Hanxter 08-04-2004 12:04 PM

the boys iare in spin control...

sems that if it was league administered he would have been suspended only if he tested positive, but...

if the club had done it, then they would not have been able to release him under the bargaining agreement which is why they're not saying why... only that "it was not a difficult decision" per jerry jones...

Cocaine.. now there's a tough habit to kick.

Gee, the man tested positive for coke, you think Parcells is gonna let him slide? Sports reporters amaze me sometimes. Anyways, they're not out of this playoff race just yet, and I think Julius Jones will be one of the big surprises in the league this year, just watch.

BigGov 08-04-2004 04:38 PM

No, they didn't cut him for coke because that would be against the Collective Bargining Agreement. That's a VERY bad thing.

The Cowboys wouldn't DARE cut anyone for testing positive for a controlled substance.

(They're doing their job, they're reporting what they're told. Right now it currently looks like the Cowboys are in direct violation for the CBA but reporters are doing the right thing and NOT attacking the Cowboys. They're just doing what they're told.)

Jesus Malverde 08-04-2004 06:48 PM

What the hell is this. I don't even know what to say. All I can think of is this might be a blessing in disguise or a terrible, terrible decision. I have faith in Parcells, but how could Carter let the team down like this (whatever it is he did)?

Because Quincy was SO outstanding last year... right ?

BigGov 08-04-2004 11:44 PM

He wasn't horrible. There were far worse quarterbacks in the league, and Quincy was showing some good progess.

pan6467 08-04-2004 11:50 PM

CBA or not players need to learn what ZERO tolerance is. Unless they come and admit a problem BEFORE the test a second pop should be a year's suspension and rehab and a 3rd pop automatic cut and banned from the game.

If I worked at a job that tested for drugs and I popped, I would be fired on the spot.

These players need to be welcomed to the real world and not babied and given passes. Tired of these million dollar pussies getting away with whatever they want. It only adds to their problems.

Look at Daryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Steve Howe, and on and on and on. Keep getting passes and slaps on the wrist they have no real reason to quit and won't. You give out tough love and set examples people learn reral fast.

You do the crime you do the time.

Addiction is a problem, but sports teams have great resources to help, far better than anyone on the street can usually ever get.

VTBrian 08-05-2004 12:20 AM

If I fail a company administered drug test even once I get fired. Athleats should learn that they are not exempt from the rules the rest of us have to fallow.

Yes there was. I had to suffer through the Bears Kordell experiment. Good god. I wouldn't wish that upon my worst enemy. Even the Packers...well maybe I would :D

bond007 08-05-2004 05:19 AM

well, so far, here is what we know:

1. Quincy recently tested positive for an illegal substance.
2. at the least, this was Quincy's 2nd offense.
3. the Cowboys are NOT in violation... directly or indirectly... of the CBA!

iamtheone 08-20-2004 06:19 AM

Carter was a good QB, very good out of the pocket, he does have a trend to throw some interceptions. I really don't think he was star material however. Vinny? Come on, well, at least we have experience in QB. They need to start Julius Jones at RB... I don't know what is going to happen this year, I have been a Cowboys fan for 10 years now, i have seen it all.....

archer2371 08-20-2004 10:34 AM

If Jerry Jones wasn't such a jackass back when Jimmy Johnson was the coach, we'd be leading the entire league with Seven or more Super Bowl wins overall, but noooooooo.... Owner likes to play coach now and then, being on the field during game.... grumble grumble grumble. Sorry, severe hate still for Jerry Jones, at least he seems to not mess with Parcells too much.

Rdr4evr 08-20-2004 10:45 AM

Quincy could not play well under pressure, with or without him though, Cowboys are going nowhere.

Amen brother! Jimmy Johnson was the man, back in that locker room, after the game, when he yelled "how bout them Cowboys" it actually brought tears to my eyes. One hellava couch... Ah, soo many weapons back then, sooo many weapons. Emmit, Novacheck, Norton, Troy, Dion, Moose, Irvin, the list goes on......

Oakland Raiders. And Jerry "greatest reciever to ever play the game" Rice. Dont forget Gannon, Parella, Woodson, both Buchanon's, Gallery, Porter, Wheatley, Washington, Sapp and Collins. My friend, Raiders are an all-star team, Cowboys are not :) . Oh yeah, lets not forget the best punter in the league, Lechler, and one of the most powerful kickers in the league, Janakowski.

My point will be proven Saturday night.

Jimmy was the one that wanted out of Dallas, 'cause Jimmy wanted to be the GM. Jimmy knew that he'd never get that from Jerry, so Jimmy started doing all he could to get Jimmy fired. Jimmy couldn't just quit, 'cause then Jimmy wouldn't get his freedom, nor would Jimmy get paid all that severence money. in the end, Jimmy got exactly what Jimmy wanted!

btw: rumor has it, Jimmy also liked Elaine.

Spartak 08-20-2004 06:30 PM

Go Raiders! They're always fun to watch.

But I don't think they will get far without a running game.

I'd call Wheatley and Fargas a pretty decent running game, along with Crockett at FB.

Ahem Rdr4evr...

Late Drive Pushes Cowboys Past Raiders, 21-20
The Cowboys didn't need to win the game Saturday night to show improvement over last week. But they were able to accomplish both after backup quarterback Tony Romo engineered a 17-play drive in the final five minutes, capped by his one-yard touchdown run with just six seconds to play. The score gave the Cowboys a 21-20 comeback win over the Raiders at Networks Associates Coliseum and a little bit of confidence as they head back to Dallas.

What happened yo?

Man, I need to edit my other post :o . We played an excellent offensive game, but the defense let up early. The refs are also waaaaaaaay to strict in preseason, they basically kill the CB's job man. It didnt help that they were completely against the Raiders either :). Its all good though man, its only pre-season. Wait till the real season starts and we get more serious. Non of this 3rd string BS :). We will prevail.

iamtheone 08-23-2004 09:18 AM

Good attitude..... May the best team win.

Looks like Quincy is a Jet now. From ESPN.com:

Quote:

Free agent quarterback Quincy Carter, released by the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 4 after allegedly testing positive in violation of the NFL substance abuse policy, on Tuesday sign a one-year contract with the New York Jets.

Financial details of the deal were not immediately available, but it is believed Carter will earn more than $500,000. Once he learns the Jets offense, Carter is expected to serve as the primary backup to starter Chad Pennington.

Thanks for the update! I have mixed feelings on Quincy, he was great out of the pocket, great awareness but I don't think he was the next Cowboys QB for years to come.

Plea:
C'mon star QB, come out whereever you are, come talk to Jerry, come and play for America's Team and put us where we deserve to be.... On Top! (again).......
