Away Goal Rule

Could someone who follows soccer please explain the "away goal rule" in simple English to a non-soccer follower.
I heard it on Sports Centre and didn't understand, checking the Internet I was confused. It could just be my laziness to figure it all out, but I'm sure some TFRers could just tell me (I hope).

read a little bit about it and here is my understanding

when a series is tied (by the # of goals), they look at how many goals the team scored AWAY (that is, playing in the opponents country, or not at home)

team w/ more away goals get the series win.

the dude is right, in a soccer series there's only two games.

for example: a fictional series between Liverpool and Bayern Munich:

game #1- in Liverpool: Liverpool beats Bayern Munich, 3-2

game #2- in Munich: Bayern Munich beats Liverpool, 2-1

They're tied in AGGREGATE goals. even though when Liverpool won it was by a larger score than when Bayern won, Bayern scored more goals when they were in Liverpool than Liverpool scored when they were in Munich. That's the away goal rule. Hope you understand.

Because it is thought to be harder to play at opponents' stadia, the away goals are weighted more heavily when the scores over a two-leg series are tied.

Bizarre scenario last night when AC Milan and Inter Milan, who share the San Siro stadium, finished with a 1-1 aggregate score (0-0 in the first leg) and because AC were the 'away' team last night they go through to the final. Italian football is very dull.
