419 Penalty Minutes

PHILADELPHIA -- For one night, the Philadelphia Flyers turned back into the Broad Street Bullies.

Claude Lapointe and Mark Recchi scored 30 seconds apart in the first period, helping the Flyers beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3 Friday night in a game that featured five consecutive brawls in the final two minutes and set an NHL record with 419 penalty minutes.

"We're not scared of Ottawa and we're not intimidated by their talent," Flyers goaltender Robert Esche said.

Officials needed about 90 minutes after the game ended to sort the penalties. The previous record for penalty minutes was 406 by the Minnesota North Stars and Boston Bruins in 1981. The Flyers had 213 minutes and Ottawa had 206.

Philadelphia enforcer Donald Brashear and Ray started the fighting by dropping their gloves with 1:45 left. As they skated off the ice, the rest of the players joined in, including the goalies as Ottawa's Patrick Lalime skated the length of the ice to go after Esche.

Once play resumed, all the players, except the new goalies, immediately went after each other. At the next faceoff, Philadelphia's Michal Handzus and Ottawa's Mike Fisher went at it. Another fight broke out 30 seconds later. Finally, Philadelphia's Patrick Sharp and Ottawa's Jason Spezza finished it off.

Man, one guy I wouldn't want to fight on Ottawa is that 10 foot tall freak Chara. Did he kick anyone's ass?

Zeld2.0 03-07-2004 12:28 AM

that is so damn hilarious

Stare At The Sun 03-07-2004 12:38 AM

Damn, those guys know how to fight, NBA and NFL fights are so pathetic compared to that.

Billy Ocean 03-07-2004 06:44 AM

Great game... you know it's nearly playoff time now.

Chara is a beast. I watched him come up with the Islanders and he's got to be the strongest guy in the NHL. It's not just about his size, he's knows how to win a fight also. His father is a world class Greco Roman wrestler and Zdeno wrestled for years. I can't imagine fighting a guy that can put that weight on you and wear you down while his massive arms are clubbing you. I didn't think he was much of a fighter when he first came up, now I've seen him fight so often that I've learned to respect his technique.

yabobo 03-07-2004 07:19 AM

Yea it was too much for PHILADELPHIA!
They go into Washington and get beat for the
first time this year. Ottawa wins its game 4/2
I guess this means they weren't hurt!

silent_jay 03-07-2004 08:49 AM

Chara's a chump he has no style all he does is shake people around, in all his fights I've yet to actually see him throw a punch, it's gonna be funny when he gets speedbagged by Domi, I can't wait.

God of Thunder 03-07-2004 09:24 AM

Just like old time hockey, coach!!

Not that I'm a Chara fan, but the only thing Domi is going to speedbag on Chara is his sack. Domi is a midget, make sure you tell him to bring a ladder and pack a lunch.

rockzilla 03-07-2004 03:30 PM

Funny that Martin Havlat (the reason this whole thing started) was one of the only players left at the end of the game. Can't wait for the rematch, I think it's April 2nd.

I think Philly's coach, Bobby Clarke wanted a piece of Ottawa coach Jacques Martin after the game. He had to be led away from the Ottawa dressing room by security shouting "I want to see that fucking coward Martin right now" or something to that effect.

size really has no bearing in any fight Domi is in he has proven this in the past

Billy Ocean 03-07-2004 07:19 PM

That would be a nice fight. I'm not saying Chara is the best fighter in the NHL, just that he's very imposing. And like Domi "Rag Dolls" people to win fights, Chara just wears people down and then gets in some good punches. I don't think they've ever fought yet.

stickyrice 03-08-2004 12:55 AM

you know you're running out of fighters when Spezza drops the gloves. not that I'm knocking Spezza cuz I think he's awesome, but man that was a good brawl.

Tempboy 03-09-2004 05:09 AM

Hahah.. that fight was sweeeeeeeet! Nothing like a good ol' fashioned hockey brawl to stir up some rivalries. :D

feelgood 03-09-2004 09:02 AM

You know what's even better? In summer time, Pat Quinn is suppose to be joined with Ken Hitchcock and Jacques Martin are suppose to be coaching the Canadian Hcokey team...

Should be fairly interesting run for the playoff...

paj 03-09-2004 02:05 PM

jeesus christ, i cant believe i missed that! ione of the best brawls ive ever seen!

remember folks, its not a true brawl until the goalies go at it

any way i can download that video? where did u get it from?>

losthellhound 03-09-2004 02:43 PM

Thats just disgusting, I missed the game, and Im glad I did.. When I watch hockey, I want to watch hockey, not fighting. If I wanted to watch fighting I'd go home to my parents for the weekend ;)

But seriously, they should stop fights right away, physically seperate people.. Theres no reason for this really

edmos1 03-09-2004 03:43 PM

I have to admit that I would have normally enjoyed this much more, except given the Bertuzzi/Moore incedent it is hard to get enjoyment.

Strange Famous 03-10-2004 11:57 AM

I cant help but agree with hellhound, hockey is supposed to be a sport, not a brawl... people that fight should get automatic 10 game bans, thats the only way to stop it. If you want to see people fight, why not just watch boxing?

Nikilidstrom 03-10-2004 02:22 PM

I've said it in another thread, and I'll say it here, fighting is a legitimate and necessary part of the game. If the players were not allowed to handle situations in one-on-one fights, there would be many more Bertuzzi/Moore incidents. For every 1 injury caused because of frustration even after a there was a fight, at least 10 are avoided because the 2 players were allowed to settle it man to man. Without fighting, there would simply be no other way for players to vent over a situation then going out and taking a run at another player, creating a huge potential for major injuries.

Billy Ocean 03-10-2004 08:01 PM

Not only that but the stick work would really hurt people also. You're a little more responcible with your stick when you know a dirty play will end up with a punch in the face.

Ace_O_Spades 03-10-2004 08:15 PM

link to video so i can download it?

Quite honestly, if these men cannot help but attack and attempt to maim people, then they should not be allowed to play professional sport. When I play sports sometimes I am frustrated, but if someone fouls me in soccer I do manage to resist getting up and punching the other player. What kind of role models are these players to youngsters, teaching them to settle their problems and disagreements with violence?

Because hockey is a vilolent sport? Mabye if they got rid of checking and the hockey sticks it might not be, but then you wouldn't have hockey..

streak_56 03-12-2004 02:50 AM

The funniest part of the whole fights was when Handzeus was taken down a first time.... he quickly gets back up and was tackled down again.... that was just pure poetry in motion

Strange Famous 03-12-2004 11:32 AM

Serpent... gridiron is also a tough sport, full of hard hits and rough play, but the players usually manage to resist fist fighting, and they are punished if they do fight normally. The same with rugby.

silent_jay 03-13-2004 10:30 PM

To truly understand why fight occur in hockey one has to be in a hockey fight and see how they develop. They are not trying to kill and maim each other, hurt each other yes it's a fight what else are you supposed to do. If fighting is taken out of the game all players have rule of the ice and the high-sticking and slashing will be out of control. These players have to worry about their jobs first being a role model is secondary and you are not going to chane your style of play because you think some kid's parents don't explain to them that when you reach a certain level of hockey tough guys become part of the game. If they wanted to rid hockey of fighting they are about 50-60 years too late, take it out now and fans will run away like they are at a Michael Jackson concert.

How can you say people who fight should be given 10 game suspensions this is ridiculous, do you realize some players have between 12-20 fighting majors, now with your 10 game suspension for a fight how many games are these players going to be playing in a year? You get in 8 fights and BANG years over. Not a good solution at all.

Strange Famous 03-14-2004 12:56 AM

Hockey will never be more than the fringe sport that it is then... if they dont clean the game up and get rid of the fighting and make it a genuine athletic contest it will stay what it is, a violent sport full of bullies and thugs, which most people dont want to watch.

To say hockey players are incapable of not fighting when they take hits doesnt make any sense though. Footballers take a lot of hard hits and tackles, and most of the time at least dont need to jump up and start fist fighting.

try skating back and forth for 30 seconds, rest a minute and do it again for an hour, rest 15 minutes and do it again, rest 15 minutes and do it again...
all the time watching where your team mates are in the play while trying to keep your head from getting clocked...
let me tell ya, it's a leg burner, and it does take athletic prowess to play the game...
the majority of fights is brought on by frustration, not hooliganism as you seem to think...

souzafone 03-14-2004 07:12 AM

a fringe sport, have you been under a rock, and hockey not being a genuine athletic contest, like Hanxter said put on some skates and try playing a shift in any game I guarantee you won't last. Hockey is not full of bullies and thugs name me some of these "thugs" if it is full of them.
Comparing football(soccer I assume) with hockey really doesn't work, is there body contact to the extent that there is in the NHL? Not in any soccer games I have watched the get penalties for thing like that. And I seem to remember seeing some soccer player punching a referee at some time in the last couple of years, now that must be a bully. Do you even know what people like to watch during a hockey game? 95% of the arena will be on its feet once the fight start the fans love them, I am assuming that you don't watch a massive amount of hockey. But like Hanxter said the emotions are what lets these things develop not like soccer hooligans.

You are right, in the case of Soccer, the fans are violent enough for everyone. I don't remeber there ever being a hockey game that had to be broken up with tear gas and baton beatings, or hundreds of people having to be carted off on stretchers because of a bad call on the ice caused the fans to go into a rage and rip each other apart. Nope, you are absolutely right, no violence in Soccer at all.

Nikilidstrom 03-14-2004 10:22 AM

As a side note, for once in my lifetime, ESPN finally made some intelligent remarks regarding hockey yesterday. They said that hockey is being unfairly picked on for violence, when intentional actions that have the potential to cause injury in other sports are just called "playing with intensity." What about when a pitcher throws a ball at a batter's head? This happens every year at least once. What about when that same batter throws a bat at the pitcher, then rushes the mound? How many years go by in baseball that you don't see a bench clearing brawl? Those are blips in the news, and everbody moves on, with nobody slamming the sport for being violent. Or how about when a football player spears another player with his helmet, with the potential to end that players career? Or in basketball, when a player gets hacked driving to the basket, gets up and starts swinging at that player, then when a ref tries to break it up, punches the ref and has to be tackled by many of his teammates to end the brawl? All of these events have happened, and many of them happen to lesser extent on a regular basis in these sports, but no one calls for radical changes to be made. They just agree it went too far, hand down a suspension, and go on with the game, with the same "intensity" as before.

wrongfullyaccuzd 03-16-2004 07:52 AM

First off, awesome video, Hanx. Thanks for sharing.
Secondly, I want to back the whole "fighting is a necessary evil that controls high-sticking, etc." notion. This is completely true and, in my opinion, can be likened to hitting batters with pitches in baseball. While not "accepted" per se, (after all, you can get thrown out of the game) it is unofficially accepted as a way to regulate the game within the game. This could spark a whole discussion on the DH, which is not my intention! But you see my point.
I like hockey even without the fighting, and while I can't speak from first hand playing experience, I still believe fighting is an integral part of a very athletic, very exciting game which is no way, shape, or form a "fringe sport."
Go Sabres.
