Sorry about not posting a question after getting my question right - I hadn't logged in since I answered...

My guess is they had multiple games.

djtestudo 03-20-2004 09:52 PM

forseti is right - there were two games a year (not doubleheaders...)

Go ahead and ask.

forseti-6 03-21-2004 04:39 AM

Who is the youngest player to win the triple crown?

JoeyB 03-21-2004 04:55 PM

I changed my mind...I think it's Carl Yastremski.

pan6467 03-24-2004 12:17 AM

would it be Frank Robinson?

forseti-6 03-24-2004 06:47 PM

not frank rob or yaz

forseti-6 03-24-2004 06:48 PM

hint, he's dead, in the HOF and not known for homeruns

pan6467 03-24-2004 07:50 PM

Dead, HOF and not known for homers.......hmmmm

good hints and good question.........

Ty Cobb?

SAM821 03-24-2004 07:54 PM

djtestudo 03-24-2004 09:15 PM

Correct. It's Cobb

djtestudo 03-25-2004 07:41 PM

Good job. I didn't even see he said it before me. Congrats.

pan6467 03-25-2004 07:59 PM

Woohoo...... Damn good question.

Ok here's a Cleveland Indians question......

Who was Cleveland's 1st FA and what is special about him and the team ?

djtestudo 03-25-2004 10:19 PM

I can think of two possible answers here. I'll give the first.

Napoleon Lajoie was stolen from the NL Phillies by the AL Athletics during the time when the two were competing directly and players were jumping leagues. The Phillies got a state court to force him to play for the Phillies, but this only applied to Pennsylvania. So, the AL allowed him to go to Cleveland, where the only restriction was he couldn't play games in Philadelphia. The team named themselves the Cleveland Naps in his honor, then became the Indians after his retirement.

pan6467 03-26-2004 08:50 AM

good answer but not what I was thinking of. No this guy was in the '70's.

djtestudo 03-26-2004 09:32 AM

Well, I just looked through Baseball Reference and I haven't a clue. Next guess...

pan6467 03-26-2004 10:20 AM

This player was a pitcher.

djtestudo 03-26-2004 10:58 AM

Wild Guess...Len Barker, who pitched the only perfect game in franchise history?

pan6467 03-26-2004 03:56 PM

no good guess though

he was originally a Baltimore Oriole

djtestudo 03-26-2004 07:46 PM

Frank Robinson being the first black manager?

I know that isn't right since that was a trade, but dammit I'm gonna get this one :p

forseti-6 03-26-2004 08:27 PM

Joe Charboneau? I dunno, his named popped up in my head for some odd reason

djtestudo 03-26-2004 10:46 PM

The answer is Wayne Garland, but I have absolutely NO idea what is special about him and the Indians :)

Edit: I found it...Damn that was a challenge :D

I had to Google to find it so I'll wait until no one else can get it to post the answer.

JoeyB 03-27-2004 06:10 AM

If the answer is Wayne Garland, there's no question that it was a challenge!!!!

forseti-6 03-27-2004 07:20 AM

Ok I cheated and googled him, and know what's special about him.... he pitched a no-hitter in his first start...

djtestudo 03-27-2004 09:32 AM

Really? This is what I found.

He was the first FA to sign a million-dollar contract, with the Indians for 10 years, and was waived after five after hurting his arm warming up on his FIRST DAY of spring training for the Indians, pitching poorly that year, undergoing surgury the next year, and never was the same.

My guess is that you are closer though.

pan6467 03-28-2004 07:40 AM

DJ is right, the special thing about Wayne Garland was he became the first FA to sign a multi-million dollar contract (2.3 million over 10 years.)

The no hitter I didn't know about.

wow I had a good one. Normally people race to get to my question.

ok DJ you are up

djtestudo 03-28-2004 11:23 AM

How am I gonna follow that :D

What manager has the highest career winning percentage?

JoeyB 03-28-2004 05:20 PM

Connie Mack

djtestudo 03-28-2004 05:43 PM

Nope

wrongfullyaccuzd 03-28-2004 08:09 PM

Bobby Cox??

djtestudo 03-28-2004 09:00 PM

Nope

wrongfullyaccuzd 03-28-2004 09:02 PM

Torre?

EDIT: I assume we're talking about a credible number of games? I know there are a few guys who retired like 3-0 and stuff.

JoeyB 03-29-2004 04:49 AM

Dick Howser

djtestudo 03-29-2004 03:54 PM

1) Nope.

2) I got the answer from BaseballReference.com, and he is a legendary manager.

3) Nope

JoeyB 03-29-2004 04:07 PM

Okay, before I just start rattling off names, which wouldn't be fair......my last guess.

Joe McCarthy.

forseti-6 03-29-2004 05:38 PM

Casey Stengel or Sparky Anderson?

Joe McCarthy.

Good job :)

I was hoping it would be that hard, since even though he was the manager of a series of great Yankees teams, he kind of gets lost deep in the shuffle of the great managers.

JoeyB 03-29-2004 07:58 PM

I got one?? Blind squirrell---nut.

What player went the longest without a stolen base????

forseti-6 03-30-2004 07:38 PM

Cecil Fielder

What trade involved the most players in baseball history?

clifclav 04-02-2004 07:55 AM

I believe that was the Orioles trade their first year here, 1954 when they got Gus Triandos for Don Larsen and there were like 20 other guys involved. Leave it to the Orioles to trade the Yankees their Series perfect Game Pitcher:):):)

clifclav 04-02-2004 08:09 AM

I'll assume that was correct and throw one out there:

Two guys have won the National League Rookie of the Year and the American League MVP award. Name them.

djtestudo 04-02-2004 08:17 AM

Dick Allen
Frank Robinson

The Mighty Turtle is right again. Your question sir.

Love the new sig line also but I think it is truly, no e.

djtestudo 04-02-2004 10:02 AM

I always spell tru(e)ly wrong, so I don't care anymore :)

Dammit, I'm running low on questions...Who holds the record for most home runs allowed in a single season?

clifclav 04-02-2004 10:23 AM

Bert Blyleven?

I remember that because two or three years ago. Jose Lima was on pace to give up some ridiculous number like 75 or 80 and shatter Blyleven's record.

Assuming I'm correct Here goes:

What pitcher holds the MLB record for having Three Picked Off runners in one inning?

DJTestudo since you should already know this one by heart you have to tell me who the catcher was and who they were playing against.

djtestudo 04-02-2004 12:55 PM

Well, if you insist :D

I'm not 100% sure about the pitcher but I believe it was Tippy Martinez.

As for the rest of it, Baltimore's other catchers were out of the game, so utility player Len Sakata was forced to catch. Each of the three Blue Jays hitters who got on base were so anxious to steal on Sakata, they forgot about the pitcher and were picked off.

Sakata then came up the next inning and hit a game winning homer.

JoeyB 04-06-2004 10:26 AM

Is there another question out there or do we cap it off with Lenn Sakata?

Wait...we haven't mentioned Floyd Rayford yet, so we need to continue!!!

clifclav 04-06-2004 01:04 PM

I left it for DJT to take. It's been a reasonable amount of time now though so why don't you take it JoeyB, You Yankee Loving Scum......

Sorry thats just a reflex. Nothing personal man.:):):)

No offense taken! After 20 years, I've accepted 3 truths.....Steinbrenner is an idiot, with all of their money--I would still take Ron Guidry over most of the high priced free agents.....and third, people are going to follow up "Yankee Loving" with the word "scum".

It's the price we pay.

:D

djtestudo 04-07-2004 06:52 AM

Just as long as you know :D

For my question, an easy one.

Who has the most career losses as a manager?

pan6467 04-07-2004 08:13 AM

Connie Mack Philadelphia A's

djtestudo 04-07-2004 10:33 AM

Told you it was easy :D

pan6467 04-07-2004 02:50 PM

Ok........

Philly and NY are 2 of the 5 cities that contained MLB teams (since 1920) at the same time. Name another city, the 2 teams and the new city one relocated to. (this should be real easy so making it a multi parter won't matter much)

Example: NY had the Yankees and Giants, the Giants moved to San Francisco.

Extra credit if you can name all the cities and teams and moves.

djtestudo 04-07-2004 03:03 PM

St. Louis Cardinals and Browns (to Baltimore in 1954)

Boston Red Sox and Braves (to Milwaukee/Atlanta in 1953)

Chicago White Sox and Cubs

djtestudo 04-07-2004 08:33 PM

Since I have a question, I'll assume that I'm right (as if I need to ;)).

What were the original teams that made up the National league at its founding in 1876?

pan6467 04-07-2004 10:02 PM

Good Job DJ. May not agree in politics but we both share a love for baseball so you have to be a decent man.

I'll let another answer this one. get some new blood in the mix.

I object.....A Henson question would be a highly publicized baseball question that may seem like a great question, but really is only at about a AA level.

Then the question decides to become a football question instead.

Now...please continue.

Reds is one of them?

djtestudo 04-08-2004 10:13 PM

Yes...

djtestudo 04-10-2004 01:37 PM

This shouldn't be THAT hard a question...

JoeyB 04-10-2004 02:17 PM

Braves, Cardinals and Giants.......???

djtestudo 04-10-2004 09:40 PM

That's four...

JoeyB 04-11-2004 02:57 PM

How many were there???

Braves, Cardinals, Giants, Reds (already given)

Let's add the Cubs......what about the Dodgers???

djtestudo 04-11-2004 08:37 PM

Yes...no...

pan6467 04-11-2004 09:05 PM

Boston Red Stockings, Chicago White Stockings, Cincinnati Red Legs, Hartford Dark Blues, Louisville Grays, Philadelphia Athletics, Brooklyn Mutuals and St. Louis Browns.

With Chicago beating the Grays 4-0 in the season opener.

Baseball history is a beautiful thing to read and know about. For a game that builds itself on tradition and the past they keep reliving it with teams facing bankruptcy and owners not wanting to share the money with each other.

Ok an easy one now...........

What was Albert Belle's first official "baseball name" extra points if you can tell why he changed it.

djtestudo 04-12-2004 05:29 AM

Sorry...I had the Brooklyn team listed as the "New York" Mutuals, but their home field was in Brooklyn, so nice job.

As for your question, that would be my good friend Joey Belle.

forseti-6 04-12-2004 04:22 PM

He changed it because he didn't sound tough enough?

pan6467 04-12-2004 10:46 PM

Lol no he changed it because he went through alcohol rehab in what was supposed to be his first Major year and felt Albert was a more "mature" name.

To show where maybe he had some head problems, early in life his mother claimed that the Indians brainwashed him into thinking he had a drinking problem. But there were stories here in Cleveland and to basically summarize them, if he hadn't gotten the help, he would have never made the majors for any team.

Albert through all his head problems does have my respect in that he sought help and overcame his addiction. Sad story his, he was a hard working player who just couldn't get away from the press, he truly wasn't a bad guy. Don't know about what he's like now tho.

djtestudo 04-14-2004 12:19 PM

I feel evil today so I'm giving a very hard question.

Everyone knows why Babe Ruth was sold by the Red Sox to the Yankees. Before that, he was a Baltimore Oriole for a short time, before being sold to Boston. Why was he sold by the Orioles? And as a bonus, what other player was sold along with him who later became a part of baseball legend?

JoeyB 04-14-2004 02:36 PM

Evil.

moonlight 04-17-2004 03:36 AM

I only know half the answer to this one. Funny thing is, the Ruth to the Yankee deal might never have happened if Connie Mack and the Philadelphia A's had not first passed on Ruth before the Orioles sold him to the Red Sox because the Orioles were in financial straights thanks to the Federal League plunking a team in Baltimore. Ironically, it was also financial reasons that sent Ruth to the Yankees. I can't even begin to speculate who the player might be so I'll just throw a name out:

Ray Chapman?

djtestudo 04-17-2004 10:26 AM

Nice job. Ray Chapman isn't it, though.

HINT: The player was a pitcher.

pan6467 04-18-2004 10:06 AM

Ok this is officially a stumper we need th answer and another question to keep thread moving.

djtestudo 04-18-2004 10:10 AM

Ernie Shore.

Moonlight got the important part of the question, so he can go.

moonlight 04-19-2004 05:33 AM

What batter did Nolan Ryan strike out to break Koufax's single season strikeout record?

bellzboy 05-05-2004 03:51 PM

Robbie Alomar? or was that the all time record?

dammit now I remember, that was the 7th no hitter.

(bump)
