Jagr's gone!

Caps trade Jagr to the Rangers for Carter, AND pay half his salary. And still I think the Caps get the better deal.

Comments?

djtestudo 01-23-2004 05:29 PM

Thank God. They need to tear that team apart.

Ace_O_Spades 01-23-2004 05:32 PM

My prediction:

The Rangers still suck, and will miss the postseason again.

All the talent in the world can't save that team... its like the black hole of talent, not even light can escape

silent_jay 01-23-2004 05:38 PM

The Rangers have a great team on paper, but on the ice they blow. Jagr won't help much. Carter going the other way maybe he can start scoring goals again, but the Caps need more than Carter.

maximusveritas 01-23-2004 06:51 PM

Sather's just trying to save his ass by getting yet another big-name star. Problem is, he got another goalscorer when they really need help on defense and in the net. Still, they are only a couple games out of that final playoff spot, so they might sneak in.

BulletCatcher 01-23-2004 11:14 PM

The New York Rangers are the Democrat Party of the NHL. Instead of actually working to fix the problems they just continue to throw more money at it :D .

mbchills 01-24-2004 12:30 AM

grrr rangers! they do have a great time, maybe its time for a new coach? or boot camp.

Ace_O_Spades 01-24-2004 12:50 AM

maybe its time to stop pampering their players and make them practice in some cold ass junior hockey rink, and have no luxuries, until they start playing like they're paid to play, and how they played before coming to NYC

i think it could work

Tempboy 01-24-2004 01:54 AM

Any player that gets traded or signs with the NYR automatically starts to suck, and yet is paid 3x their true value.

Actually, I think the Rangers more closely resemble our US government as a whole: The Democrats wanting to throw money around, The Republicans with their lame-brain ideas of we can beat everybody, and Mark Messier representing the working immigrant who has been allowed to stay too long and is taking a job away from a hard working AHLer.

Seriously, though, what the hell are the Rangers and Glen Sather thinking? This is not 1985 and offense doesn't win Cups anymore. If the Rangers were serious about winning, they would've upgraded their goalie, picked up a solid defenseman, and left Jagr to rot in DC.

Bad trade by a poorly run organization. The only team that is run worse is the Hawks.

FlyinHawaiin343 01-24-2004 08:24 PM

I actually think this is a pretty good trade for the Rangers even though its not what they need right now. Jagr is still one of the best players in the NHL and trading Carter for Jagr and half his salary is a steal for the Rags.

nice comparison

rangers dont have that bad of a defense tho, but i agree on the goalie

The Caps weren't really expecting much.. the biggest issue about the trade is Jagr's bloated contract. Salary dump for Washington. No more, no less.

Agreed. Except for them making the playoffs.

Also, just wanted to add that Carter will only be a good deal for the Caps if he stops being such a lazy player.

FleaCircus 01-25-2004 11:18 AM

Seems like the Rangers are just throwing money at another postseason to see what happens. I think they need to worry less about elite-tier talent and more about on-ice chemistry.

Maybe they should build a team from the ground up instead of the top down.

KWSN 01-25-2004 04:10 PM

it was a good trade for the Rangers IMHO, doesn't settle any of their needs BUT gets rid of Carter who was sucking ASS this year. He got ENDLESS chances to score and shot the puck over the god damn net. COUNTLESS times... it made me sick. A player like Jagr will help, but not a lot. Their defense is fucking crippled after losing Kasparaitis and DeVries, they definetly need something else there. They need a dependable backup too, with Dunham and Blackburn out. It was obvious how much LaBarbera and Markkanen sucked in that last game against the Senators, UGH. Terrible game. As far as deals go, the Rangers got the better end. As far as needs go, the Caps got it. Heh, maybe the Rangers can use Jagr as bait for a great defenseman. I'd always wanted to see Nik Lidstrom play for the Rangers... :)

Grondar 01-25-2004 04:26 PM

This trade had been talked about to some extent all season..

I really feel bad for Anson. He is being welcomed to a team that is about to trade away all its talent.

I think the Rangers probably should try and trade for a decent D-Man instead of more top-line offenders, but they aren't my team, so I am probably wrong.

They ARE my team, and you're certainly right. However, getting Jagr wasnt a bad thing, it was just the WRONG thing. What with the injuries the Rangers are goung through, Joel Bouchard and Boris Mironov aren't enough on backup. They need a proven devender besides Leetch and Malahkov, because Poti sucks, Kasparaitis is injured, and the aforementioned Bouchard and Mironov are backups at best.

dylanmarsh 01-25-2004 09:30 PM

Why do I get the feeling my great-grandkids will be chanting "1994" at the Rangers in 2044? God must really like Richter to save him from this sinking ship.

FlyinHawaiin343 01-26-2004 04:55 PM

Bondra and Kolzig are more than likely the next to go. There are rumors that the Senators are interested in Bondra but they aren't that close to coming to a deal. The Rangers and Flyers could be interested in Kolzig but im not sure what they could trade to get him.

dylanmarsh 01-26-2004 06:18 PM

I'm guessing if a team wants Bondra or Kolzig, they'll have to take both players; like the Bourque trade a few years ago when the Avs had to take Andreychuk, too.

Speaking of the Avs, I would not be surprised in the least if Bondra and Kolzig went there. If the Avs offered Sauve and Skoula, the Caps would jump at it.

Should be an interesting trade-deadline, nonetheless.

Nikilidstrom 01-26-2004 08:35 PM

well, Jagr's goal and assist tonight in a 5-2 win over Florida (yeah, I know, its only Florida) should make you NYR fans feel better. While I don't think Jagr is th answer to the Ranger's problems, if they can get him playing consistently, it won't hurt em either. That is a big if though.

KWSN 01-27-2004 06:09 PM

Goal and 2 assists actually. He had a nice game. Good to see the rangers playing that way... too bad it had to be against Florida and not teams they NEED to beat (ie BOSTON)

bigbad 01-28-2004 02:11 AM

I laugh to see the highest paid team in the league consistently not making the playoffs while lower paid teams like Minnesota and Anaheim make it far.

silent_jay 01-29-2004 09:30 PM

It just proves that the salary of your team has nothing to do with winning, it's how they blend together and gel as a team which the Rangers can't do. Too many ego's to deal with too many high priced players to keep happy.

And sorry to say but when Kasparitis went down from a knee on knee collision I was so happy, it could not of happened to a more deserving player the amount of times he sticks out his knee when he tries to hit. Too bad Ulf Samuelsson couldn't come back so someone could show him what it feels like to have your knee torn apart.

ace81385 01-29-2004 09:52 PM

*Sobs* its been 10 yrs since the Rangers won the cup and it doesnt look like their gonna get any closer to winning another this year. The Rangers like to throw money at over the hill players instead of building a team with good young players that are willing to learn and play hard. JAgr is not the answer . :(

Jephree 01-31-2004 10:12 AM

Good!

BigBlueWrecking 01-31-2004 10:44 AM

Getting Jagr for Carter is a cheap deal for the Rangers. From a pure deal, I think it is a good one. I just don't think it is what the Rangers need. The Caps are paying a lot of his salary, so I guess it is ok. Money is not a problem for the Rangers!

FIRE SATHER! The game has passed him by. That is what the real problem is.

so true

dylanmarsh 02-02-2004 05:58 AM

Fire Sather?! One of the all-time great coaches? There has to be some bit of respect of the man's past. I mean, that'd be like trading Wayne Gretzky! And we know that never happened.

BigBlueWrecking 02-03-2004 05:47 AM

Sather is the Phil Jackson of the NHL. He was surrounded with so much talent, he couldn't help but win. Now, the game has passed him by. He wants to have all of these scorers and nobody to play defense....except all of the good East Coast teams play defense well.
