Michelle Wie

I just finished watching her on ESPN, and any golfers out there, one word. Unreal.

She is only going to continue to get stronger, and better. She could very well go to Q school, get her card, and compete. I play alot of golf, I'm a 7 handicap, and what I watched tonight was pretty impressive. Her putting was good tonight, driver was a bit wayward missing right, alot, short game is amazing, her iron play is as long and as good as 90% of the other men that play on tour. Average drive was 272.9.

Impressive to say the least. Too bad it's -13 here, I want to play golf.

gov135 01-16-2004 08:35 PM

I watched until Friday Nite Fights came on.

I was impressed with Wie's ability to make the tough four or five foot putt. I thought she did herself pretty well.

However, regardless of whether she could get he card in Q-school (and I doubt it), I think the best comments were from the pro who said the hardest part of the tour is between the eighteenth hole on Sunday and the first hole on the folowing Thursday. I don't think a young teenager of any sex could expect to compete successfully in a week-in-week out situation.

Kurant 01-16-2004 09:34 PM

I think should could make Q-school, I really do. Almost all her errors tonight were course management and losing the ball right. Losing the ball right cost her more strokes then manuvering her way around the course. She had to chip out on 5 holes in 2 days. Only 1 which she par'd. Assume she pars the others, she's -3 for the tourney. All speculation of course.

Course management comes with maturity. She drives the ball well. Putting was great today, but round 1 could have used a little work. She can reach the 480y par 4's. She can get to the 600yard par 5's with driver-3 wood-short irons (8-9-wedges, which Annika can't do). She could go to Q-school, as far as getting her card? Who knows, but I like her chances over any woman in professional golf today, or any 14 year old for that matter, reguardless of sex.

xaneidolon 01-16-2004 11:39 PM

She's 14 years old for chrissake. What other 14 year old male has done what she has done. I don't predict, but I hope good things for her. What an amazing talent.

sixate 01-17-2004 04:37 AM

She is the reason that golf will never be considered a real sport in my eyes. If a 14 year old girl can compete with grown men at a "sport" then it isn't a fucking sport. She couldn't even dream of competing against men if it were a real sport. Throw her in an NFL game and watch her life end. I'd break her face with an elbow in the paint if she was on a basketball court with me. Golf has never and will never be a fucking sport!

Another thing.... Tiger Woods is not a fucking athlete!!

One last thing about this chic. She's huge for her age, which means she's most likely done growing, and most likely won't get much stronger.

Strange Famous 01-17-2004 04:55 AM

She doesnt really need to get any stronger, she already hits the ball as far as some male pro's, and as she gets better her timing will improve and she will hit even further.

I think it is a kind of limited view to think sport can only be physical contact... golf, tennis, athletics are all sports with huge followings and which require masses of talent and they dont involve elbowing people in the head or tackling people so hard they die...

The fact that at 14, male or female, she is competing with the best players in the game, and finished ahead of 48 male players in as incredible achievement.

I dont know if she will make it, but she has the potential to be a superstar in women's golf and men's golf - she could be the next Tiger Woods easily.

I can't wait to see how Vijay Singh feels when she beats him :)

Artermis 01-17-2004 07:16 AM

Not to take anything away from the girl but do you really think she is 14? ;)

No trade winds. I want to see what her game is like with tougher conditions.

She played great but she is not ready for the daily grind of the woman's tour let alone the men's tour.

I hate the thought of a woman competing with the men on the PGA when there already is an LPGA but if she goes through Q-school and EARRNS her card then by all means let her come on the tour with the men.

She will have to earn her way into the Masters. I do not see Hootie giving her a special exemption.

Also, if she gets more exemptions in the future I will be seriously pissed. Even though those exemptions can be given to anyone...I think it is unfair to the men who are trying to make a living at this game to have a spot that they might have gotten being handed to someone whose only really accolades are that she is a woman.

Tiger Woods would have kicked Michelle Wie's butt when he was 14. I think Phil would have also.

Kobe was drafted and competing against "grown" men at age 16, I guess that makes the NBA a non-sport too, eh? Oh wait, he's not a woman.

I agree about exemptions, I don't think it's fair she's going to get alot of them in the future. She needs to get her card.

As far as Tiger and Phil kicking around Wie when she was 14? I seriously doubt it. Probably very evenly matched, she probably hits the ball as far as those guys did when they were 14. But what does it matter? The only real difference, is she's physically limited, because she's a woman.

AL9045 01-17-2004 09:09 AM

Don't hate.

Hohoho.

While that may be true, she wouldn't be able, to play every tour event because of school. She is a very bright young lady who will complete her education (ala Tiger). Not a golfer myself, but found myself watching her. She is great for the sport regardless of the flavor of the gender.

Stupid comparison... Kobe was not in the NBA or even drafted at 16. It can't happen. He didn't get there until he was 18, and he wasn't even good enough to play, and that's because he was too skinny. His body just wasn't developed enough to hang with the big boys. So there's no way that he could even compete at a pro level at 14. Now LeBron on the other hand....... Look at his body. He's a man, and I know for a fact that he's been playing with NBA dudes during the few summers before he got into the NBA, but even that's different, and he wasn't even good enough at 14 to play in the NBA, and he's a fucking freak of nature. Go find me a 14 year old girl who can compete against guys in the NBA. It will never ever happen. The chics in the WNBA can't even compete against me! Golf is not a sport. It's a recreation for people with zero athletic ability who have dreams of being great sports athletes. There is skill involved, but not athletic ability.

Artermis 01-17-2004 01:15 PM

Woman develop faster than men. It is a fact. So while she may be 14 that is like a 16 year old male.

Tiger was beating men in Amateur events when he was 14.

Kinda rough that she missed the cut by one.

Jephree 01-18-2004 11:16 AM

WNBA is for women. NBA is for men. PGA is for men. LPGA is for women.
---> Wait, couldn't a lame male golfer play in the LPGA then? :D

cheesemoney 01-19-2004 02:09 AM

No. PGA is for the best golfers in the world. NO mention of sex anywhere.

There really is no point for a woman to play the LPGA if she is too good for it.

The men don't care if she plays on the tour if she *earns* her pro card.

We HAVE to give the women a sport because they cannot compete with the men--possibly with 1 freak *future* exception in Wie.

And I agree that a 14 year old girl kicking a grown man's ass with all of the athletic advantages given to men over women does weaken the argument that golf is a sport.

Its more of a game to me, just like bowling, driving (read--Nascar), or pool.

Its still damn impressive, and its still a fun game.

skysooner 01-19-2004 10:42 AM

It will be interesting to see if she can make it in the next couple of years. At age 14, there are kids that are outstanding that kind of get "forced" to achieve. I can think of Jennifer Capriati as an example. She eventually returned to the game in a strong fashion, but her late teens were a turbulent time where she fell out of the rankings and into drugs for a little while.

Bookman 01-20-2004 05:54 AM

Inspiration.
She is being her best and so can we...our best that is.

nash 01-20-2004 04:06 PM

More power to her. If she can hang in there with the men then good for her!

spiderman 01-22-2004 01:26 PM

considering Tiger's benchpress, I think it's rather silly not to call him an athlete. Man Boobs Mickelson is no athlete, however.

:)

cheesemoney 01-22-2004 09:43 PM

A good benchpress doesn't make you an athelete.
I bettin' that I can out press tiger, even though he is very strong as a golfer. I can't out drive him.

pocon1 01-25-2004 03:15 PM

Is swimming a sport? Because a lot of records are set by 15-18 year old athletes. I guess you need to define the difference between a sport and a game.

Jephree 01-27-2004 01:24 PM

I'd marry her.

i was with you up intill the nascar rip but hey thats another thered all together

wie is good for her age but why dont we wait and see if she becuase good

cheesemoney 01-29-2004 01:33 AM

Ahh.. I realize Nascar is a touchy subject.

I guess it comes down to what I see as all around athleticism. I bet michael jordan would make one hell of a wide receiver, a bitchin' soccer player, and a hell of a rugby guy in a pickup street game at the local school playground.

I can't say the same about Phil Mickelson.
I know Tony Gonzalez could play NBA basketball.
I can't say the same about any Nascar driver.

Terrell Owens is a hell of a BBall player too--I bet he would work pool players at most every sport.

Is a Nascar driver an athlete?
Can a sport be a sport if its not athletic?

If thats the case, then I'd love to be the best poker player in the world. Thats a fun "sport" for me--its certainly "mental" like Nascar, and you have to stay physically "strong" like Nascar in order to endure hours of torturous playing with very little sleep.
