Three 1-loss teams, two spots...

So who all do you think should get screwed? I'm glad I'm not a pollster/BCS exec right now.

I vote for LSU vs Oklahoma. Though it pains me to put someone who didn't win their own conference. Just seems like that will be the best game.

BigGov 12-06-2003 08:56 PM

I'll go out on a limb and say LSU will get screwed.

Everyone has been kissing OU and USC's asses all year, "Oh look at them" "Oh they're amazing" for OU "They could beat pro teams!" for USC "Look at how great these youngsters are playing!"

Who deserves to play?

LSU - They've had a hell of a lot more challenging schedule than USC. (How many more ranked teams? I forgot, I think it was like 8 more, oh yea, and Georgia twice.) They have more talent and half the press coverage.

OU - They've had one really bad game all year. This is a team that has utterly dominated most of the Big 12 all year (a better conference than the Pac-10) and just got beat by one of the most under-rated teams in the nation.

The_Dude 12-06-2003 09:03 PM

OU will definately be top 2 and play for national championship and play really really hard too.

The computer will most likely have them at 31 and it would be irrelevant what they are ranked in the human polls.

laconic1 12-06-2003 09:08 PM

They were just talking on ESPN about how the Hawaii-Boise State game matters now as far as strength of schedule goes. BOISE STATE??? I hate the BCS.

BigGov 12-06-2003 09:20 PM

COUGH COUGH ploy for ratings COUGH COUGH

After what they did to Oregon State today, I'd say SC with Oklahoma or LSU (Since Oklahoma lost so badly today).

TitleFight 12-06-2003 10:50 PM

No matter who plays in this game I think that those of us who root for the logical solution (playoffs, like every other sport) should be happy with the outcome so far. The best option seems to be that the 'screwed team' plays in their bowl game and pummels the crap out of whoever is their opponent. As for the Nat'l Championship who would care? There would still be questions surrounding the games like what if this team played that team...or they shoulda played that team...or whatever, you get the point.

Although controversy sucks, its the only way that these suckas might begin to change the tradition. I hate the BCS, not b/c I'm spiteful (b/c it usually does work out) but b/c I selfishly think that a playoff in sport is the true definition of a team's will to win. It definitely shows who's the best and most consistent.

Anyways so my vote is for the screwed team to blow out whoever that respective team may face in their bowl game.

RoadRage 12-06-2003 11:08 PM

OU vs Southern California: something will be "fixed" to ensure this.

Right now, the Pac-10 is the most disgruntled member of the BCS, having never played for the title. With the contract ending in 2005, the Pac-10 might not sign back on just to keep getting left out if Southern Cal gets screwed this year like Oregon got screwed in 2001 and Washington in 2000 (note: Pac-10's opinion, not mine.) Leave out Southern Cal, and the BCS dissolves after 2005.

The SEC is happy with the BCS, even if LSU were to be left out. The SEC helped form the Bowl Coalition Alliance, the BCS's predecessor, in an attempt to gain leverage in the National Championship picture. It worked in 1998 (Tennessee), and would have worked in 2001 if LSU hadn't upset Tennessee (SEC Championship Game) or Tennessee hadn't upset Florida (the week before, the game postponed due to WTC).

The backroom deal will be cut, LSU will be left out, and the SEC will tell LSU to keep their chin up becuase the system is preserved.

The_Dude 12-06-2003 11:14 PM

LSU will be #1 in the human polls since they beat a RANKED georgia, while USC played oregon state AT HOME.

I think this should be enough to prop LSU into the top 2 in the BCS.

USC has only played ONE ranked team this whole damn season. LSU has played georgia (twice), Mississippi, but lost to Florida.

LSU vs OU will be my pick.

Kurant 12-07-2003 12:02 AM

LSU will not be #1 in the polls, no way they can be. You can argue the fact they are both 1 loss teams, but no way they pass OU in the human polls or in the BCS. They are clear cut, not even close, the #1 team in the country this year.

They've lost 1 game, not really a big deal, but they have been murdering people all year long.

The_Dude 12-07-2003 12:15 AM

USC/LSU didnt get blown out on their only loss. The human pollsters will definately take this into notice.

I don't agree that LSU will be #1, though they may deserve it. The week Ohio State lost (Nov 22), the Trojans beat unranked UCLA at home while LSU beat ranked Ole Miss on the road and the Trojans stayed #2 and LSU only moved up to #3. I think that LSU and USC will split the first place votes fairly equally, probably along geographic lines, with the AP poll going 1. USC 2. LSU 3. Oklahoma and the coaches poll going 1. LSU 2. USC 3. Oklahoma, with the difference in points being very small. Oklahoma will get many first place votes as well. What a clusterfuck. Another scenario I have heard being played out is very interesting. There is a good chance that if USC beats #4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl that the AP poll will crown them #1, no matter the outcome of the Sugar Bowl. Sure the BCS would call the Sugar Bowl winner the National Champion but the writers would call USC the National Champion, crazy.

maximusveritas 12-07-2003 02:43 AM

Damn, i guess the only thing we know for certain is that the BCS sucks.

Heh, you keep thinking USC (who is going to be number 3, most likely) is going to blow out Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

Hey, I'm not thinking it. Michigan looked damn good a couple of weeks ago. For controversy's sake I'm just rooting for it. Read the context of the post again

gov135 12-07-2003 05:39 AM

From what I hear Oklahoma is a shoe-in.

That leaves LSU and USC. I hope the team with the better strength of schedule gets the nod for the Sugar Bowl. You shouldn't be rewarded for beating up on teams that aren't capable of beating you.

TitleFight 12-07-2003 08:13 AM

USC won their conference and their only loss was a triple ot flubber to the Bears. I feel like they deserve as good as shot as any. Maybe OU should be left out b/c they aren't conference champions? Just a thought...

djtestudo 12-07-2003 08:55 AM

The ESPN/Coaches Poll has

1) USC
2) LSU
3) Oklahoma

and from what I've heard the AP poll would likely be the same thing. However, because of how the computers do things, Oklahoma and LSU would play in the Sugar Bowl and the #1 team in both polls will be left out.

I don't think any other level of pro or amatuer sports uses a computer to figure out the rankings. And after what has happened with the BCS, I can't see anyone else EVER doing it that way.

That is one of the popular views that should be a truth instead of a view: you can't play for the national championship under this system if you didn't win your conference.

In other systems (read: playoffs) you can have those teams win titles, because they have to play and beat the best teams anyway.

The_Dude 12-07-2003 12:06 PM

PAC 10 doesnt even have a conferance championship, thus USC getting to play some weak ass teams.

if USC is going to the MNC, they will get ass RAPED by OU.

Classy.

Well what did USC do with all of the "weak ass teams"? That's right, they did what they should have done and whooped that ass. HERE:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/teamsc...d=30&year=2003

Their only loss was a triple OT game at Cal early in the season. I'm not a USC fan, and I'm not making any predictions as to who would win what, but to say they do not deserve as good a shot as any of the three at a National Championship is completely asinine.

The_Dude 12-07-2003 01:21 PM

since when is auburn ranked #6?

It's kinda hard to have a conference championship when NCAA regulations for football only allow conferences with AT LEAST 12 teams to have a title game. Thus, the ACC, Big-10, Pac-10 are immediately at a disadvantage?

Yes. 2 of the better teams in the conferance usually play in the conf championship. that means that both of these teams will get a strength of schedule boost. (exceptions would be the sec this year). OU vs KSU has boosted the sos of both teams.

ACC obviously see this and the $$ that could be gained and are workin towards a conf championship.

and the big 11 needs 1 more to get a championship game.
