Roy--retiring??
 

With Colorado's surprisingly quick exit from the playoffs, some people are predicting that Patrick Roy will retire.

I personally feel that Roy is the greatest goalie in the history of the NHL and holding most of the goaltender records certainly supports that.....



Can you make a case for any other goalie in the history of the NHL????

He can't retire now going out in the first round of the playoffs. He would have to go out on top.

I agree that Roy is one of the best goaltenders out there. I was kind of pissed when he left Montreal. Not at Roy, but at the pansy Montreal fans who booed him during his last game in Montreal. Talk about disrespect.

As for retiring, it will be a sad day when he decides to retire, but that time will inevitably come. Who knows. Maybe he can become a sports announcer for Hockey Night in Canada. :P

Roy is a stud. Always has been my favorite player since I got into hockey. He is one of the few players that time after time changes the complexion of a game for the better for his team.

I also hope he does not retire, he still needs to be traded to St. Louis so we can win a Cup! (HAH! Riiiiiight...)

I don't think he should retire yet, he has quite a bit to prove after a weak start to the season and their early out this year in the playoffs. Would be good for him to go like that bastard Hasek did, with a(nother) ring on his finger.

I was interested to see if anyone was going to break out a Terry Sawchuck reference or any player before masks!!! It's tough to make a case for any other modern day player. I guess Martin Brodeur is the only current player who can be included in the conversation without much objection.

He's the greatest of them all. Always wanted to play like him when I was a kid. And I think he should retire.

And Quadraton, I don't blame the fans for kicking Roy out of Montreal but Mario Tremblay. The ass leave him in the net against Detroit in is last game and knew all along Roy was going to snap! Tremblay + Houle = the dark days of the habs. Glad there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Last year it was all about him vs. Hasik (sp) and he lost.

The Avalanche have a good farm club, Philippe Sauve and Peter Budaj are their future.

Philippe Sauve was 6th in goals against average, 3rd in Wins and 4th in shutouts

Peter Budaj didn't have a bad rookie season

so they should fill the gap

The best goaltender of all time is, without a doubt, Ken Dryden. He was like 33 when he retired, he would have otherwise shattered all of Sawchuck's records.

It is so good to see someone break out a reference to a player who didn't benefit from ESPN!!! It's tough to compare different generations of players in any sport, but thanks for bringing in a bit of NHL history. If others don't know who Ken Dryden is....now is your chance to learn a little more.

To me, Roy is one of those players that, unless you're a fan of his team, you respect as a player but hate with a passion until he retires, and then you feel priviledged to have been able to watch him in action.

i thought he was going to retire last year after they got ousted... It looked like he lost his mind on the ice. I was suprised as hell when he stuck w/ it.

BUT I do know that his house is for sale here in Denver.

I don't know if he's leaving or not- he did say that he would be leaving the game with his skills still intact.
I'll miss his quirks thoug if he leaves. He used to talk to his goal posts, the rotation of the sticks hitting his pads, the number of times he has to roll the tape at the top of his stick...
I don't remember if he was responding to, but in response to them talking smack he says, "I can't hear you, all my stanley cup rings are clogging my ears."
Denver will miss him. Hockey will miss him.

Until Suave, Budaj or Aebischer, do something legit in the NHL - the Avs are going to suffer if Roy leaves.

I agree, Roy is a great goalie. One I hate to see go but love to see go at the same time. He is one of the few who you hate to see starting when your team is coming to town. The Avalanche are going to have a hard time without him. Everyone knew you had to go through Roy in the west to win the cup. Now hopefully it will be Nabakov!!! Go Sharks!!! I think he is tired of hockey. He did not play well all year. But I'd take him on my team. He is going to retire eventually but I'd love to see him go out on top. So I think he'll play.

Patrick Roy is retiring. He's the greatest goalie ever. I wish he would've come to the RedWings camp before he quit though. :( oh well I'll be willing to bet that most of his records are never broken. Hockey will miss the guy.

I won't hang the "best" on him

I don't see how anyone has dominated the way he has.. no-one is even close to the records he's set.

I thought I would bump this back up since Patrick has made it official.

Roy is by far the greatest ever.. he has set records that noone with maybe the exception of Broduer will ever come close to beating. He revolutionized the position completely. There are alot of good goalies but Roy is the best. That being said I hated him since he played for colorado.. but I know that he's good no matter which team he's on. I think he's making a good decision though. I don't want someone on my team that doesn't have passion.

If you look back around late Jan of 2003, he posted back to back shutouts in a row. One against Columbus (not hard to do) and one against Toronto (pretty hard to do IN Toronto). This is not "luck" of any sort.

Previous to those 2 games, he played only 1 game in the past 6 days... meaning - he had time to rest up. When he's rested, he plays like the Roy of old. Unfortunatly when it comes time for the playoffs, and he's expected to play 3 games in 4 nights, his body just can't handle it like it use to... or else we would've seen Colorado vs New Jersey right now.

gucciliver: actually, Brodeur is on his way to breaking thoise records at a faster pace than Roy was for his predecessor.

Of course I can't predict the future and I respect your assessment of Brodeur, but his legacy is still to be decided. Roy isn't on pace to do anything....he already did it.

Brodeur is an amazing talent and he certainly belongs in the same conversation, but he still trails Roy.

Another title and Conn Smyth trophy on the horizon certainly will help!

I think Brodeur is a fantastic netminder. I think if anyone could surpass Roy it would be him. We'll just have to wait and see though.

He was a thorn in my side for a while but I still knew he was the best.

Roy is one of the only golies that started in the NHL at 18 and went til he retired. He is the best in NHL History
