Tweaking college OT rules

Each team has one attempt per overtime.

Coin toss winner selects offense, defense, or end of field.

First team on offense has the ball 1st and Goal on the 20. If the first team scores a touchdown on the first play they are awarded 9 points, 8 on the second, 7 on the third, and 6 on the fourth. They have the option on kicking a field goal at any point, if they so desire. There are no conversions.

Second team on offense has to exceed the first team's point total to win or match to continue into another overtime.

Hypothetical: Alpha and Bravo tied at the end of regulation. Bravo wins the toss and elects offense. Bravo scores a touchdown on third down, earning 7 points. If Alpha scores on first or second down, they win. If they score on third down, another overtime is played. If they fail to score, they lose.

I think this would make for a MUCH shorter overtime process.

The Irishman, too, picked the fly out of his drink but then held it out over the beer and yelled "SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT, YOU BASTARD!"

make overtime shorter!? the longer it gets the more exciting it gets! The way they have it right now is perfect IMO, no changes needed.

But really why would you want to shorten the most exciting part of every football game?

the only tweakage that MIGHT be acceptable is to move 'em back to the 30 or 35 yard line to start each OT possession.

The current overtime system is a joke. I would not mind if it were similar to that of the NFL.

One or two overtimes is exciting. After five, you're getting sick of it, the players are sick of it, no one's playing anymore, the scoring gets easier because the defense is exhausted, and the longer it goes on the more likely that luck and injuries decide the game rather than knowledge and talent.

Your teams haven't had the marathon games. It's easier to see the system needs tweaking when your team has a 5 hour long game.

Well if the players would have bucked up and played better in regulation the OT would have never have happened.

And i played football in High School and have had a few OT experiences and i'm tellin you you have so much adrenaline pumping you don't get tired nearly as fast and you DO care! Imagine putting your heart into that game for so long only to lose in the ending? No, you're mistaken the kids do care about it and want to keep playing as long as they can win !

In the fifth overtime they don't care anymore and don't try anymore? GOOD, let their quitting ass lose.

Winner

Giving more points for scoring on first down rather than 2nd or third would seem to place the game more in the hands of luck than it already is. Plus, this would really favor passing teams.

I do like the idea of moving the starting point back. In addition to making it harder to score in general, this would also make the winning FG less automatic if the other team failed to score first.

If any leagues OT needs to be changed, it would have to be the NFL's sudden death rule. I think too much depends on the coin toss and is very unfair to the other team when their offense has no chance to get on the field and their defense is probably already exhausted.

NFL: leave the sudden death/overtime format the way it is.

college: move 'em back to the 30 or 35 yard line. otherwise, don't change a thing!
