Hockey dad charged with assaulting daughter after minor hockey game

TORONTO (CP) -- A man has been charged with assaulting his 10-year-old daughter after she was allegedly grabbed by the facemask and screamed at as she stepped off the ice at a minor hockey tournament Sunday.

The incident followed a game in nearby Pickering between atom teams from Windsor and Toronto. Both boys and girls play.

"The allegation is that a gentlemen grabbed one of the hockey players by the facemask as they left the ice rink and started shaking, yelling and screaming at the 10-year old," said Sgt. Paul Malik of Durham Regional Police.

Malik said the 38-year-old father of the girl has been charged with one count of assault. His name is being withheld to protect the child's identity, and he is to appear in a Durham court on Oct. 14.

The young player didn't require medical attention, Malik said.

Police said the family moved from the United States so the child could play at a more competitive level of hockey.

The manager of one of the teams at the rink said the man who grabbed the child berated her for her performance. He said the girl was crying and terrified.

"This has become the worst thing I've seen in 25 years of hockey," he said.

The player has been withdrawn from hockey by the mother to defuse the situation, and the father has been banned from attending future games the team plays, said a minor hockey official.

He said that the coaching staff moved quickly to separate the child from the man and called police.

A report will be presented to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association so it can consider what action to take.

Adults have become a concern at minor hockey.

Last November, Hockey Canada launched a public service campaign called Relax, It's Only a Game. It was aimed at educating parents, especially those who lose control when their kids are on the ice.

Okay, using this dumbass as the "unofficial TFP how-not-to-be-a-sporting-parent", (I mean he moves his family to Canada so his ten year old daughter can play more competitively), the questions are as follows:

How did you, or how do you plan to first introduce your child to competitive sports?
How did you, or how will you make sure your kid doesn't end up hating playing sports by the time they physically mature? Does this matter?
How did you, or how do you plan to make sure your child learns about sportsmanship and benefits from some of the bigger themes sports can offer? Or will you leave it to the coaches?
Did you or will you participate in the actual coaching? Why or why not?

I have alot of other questions I could pose, but I looked up and this thread started to look like a college exam. So answer what you want and go off on a tangent if you'd like.

I suppose that everyone would like their child to excel athletically, but at the very least I'd like my (future) child to see the importance of a group effort and healthy pursuits.

I guess I could just call the guy in the article above, ask how he did it, then post the exact opposite. But maybe ya'll have some ideas.
