English Premier league

So its kicked off for another season....

I'm looking foward to seeing Chelsea play and wonder if thier multi million dollar lineup can string some goals together. Im a big fan of Damien Duff when he is on his game. Thier new strip looks pretty cool too.

Spartak 08-19-2003 06:12 PM

Chelsea are damn good now, Abramovich is a brilliant owner..

However, they can't hold a candle to my beloved Arsenal, that is until the FA stops hounding Sol Campbell.

Oh, and I hope Man U self-destruct, but it looks like they kept their flair from last season, and then some :(

almostaugust 08-19-2003 08:35 PM

Yeah, the FA are hounding Sol Campbell. Its Red Card city for him. It will shattter his confidence if they keep it up. That incident against Man U for the elbow was a joke.

Porkchop 08-20-2003 02:46 AM

Yes glad the season is up and running. Hope there are a few teams in contention this time. Also a place for my team Newcastle. You never know?

bundy 08-20-2003 06:39 AM

looking forward to a big year for Liverpool... with Kewell and Owen. thats a very pretty pair of forwards... lets hope it pays off.

Mad_Gecko 08-20-2003 12:04 PM

Well, so far we've had The pensioners, the arseholes, nukie, and the thieves..

(For you non english its - Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle, and Liverpool in that order :))

Well for a big team thats doing shite, I'm not too sure about the upcoming season.

Chelsea - Do they have too much $$?
Arsenal - So close so often!
Newcastle - Dark Horses, Great manager, shame about the team. PS: Will they ever let mr. boring go paint his fence?
Liverpool - Gerrard is going to an early grave.

My Team - Could be ok, but they are pure shite, at least we are starting the season where we left it (bottom).

I'm an Aston Villa supporter btw. All shots welcome (unless your a birmingham town supporter).

EDIT: oops got the order wrong first time. Fixed it now!

Dbl Edit:

What do you think of Rio and Terry in the central defense? (lets ignore James for the time being). They have been all over the shop tonight IMHO.

almostaugust 08-20-2003 08:42 PM

Yeah im wondering if Chelsea has too much money. None of the guys speak the same language either.
Mad_Gecko, what happened to Peter Crouch, i had high hopes for that kid? Maybe he was just too tall. Hopefully he will get some goals this season with that Dion Dublin bloke next to him.

djflish 08-21-2003 11:03 AM

Arsenal all the way baby, yeah!

I'm hoping that my theory about Man Utd is true:

Man Utd are dominating the premier league with Alex Ferguson and Steve McClaren as Assistant manager.

Steve McClaren leaves for 'Boro and Man Utd go crap all of a sudden.

Man Utd sign Carlos Queiroz as assistant manager and they start winning again.

Carlos Queiroz has left Man Utd for Real Madrid.

Do you see where this is going?
Alex Ferguson=Shit
Hopefully Man Utd will start losing now!

HeAtHeN 08-21-2003 12:27 PM

I'm a Sunderland supporter..... nuff said right?

It hurts sooo much seeing the team I love fall apart like it is. Oh well....

Ei-Eye-Ei-Eye-Ei-Eye-Oh... off to Division Two we go....

:(

TOON ARMY
yeah, I'm a newcastle man. This season will be our season.

Spartak 08-23-2003 03:36 AM

BAHAHA

24th Min: Sir Alex is sent off for what he said to Winter [Linesman]. Now Ferguson continues his verbal assault on Winter - clearly using some colourful language! Winter makes a note of what was said... the FA will be making a call, no doubt

I thought that was funny, until the live commentry dished up this little gem:

27th Min: Shearer breaks the deadlock with a trademark bullit header. He got the better of Silvestre, who lost his footing, and powered the ball into the top corner from eight yards out. 1-0!

Although, I do have 2 Man U players in my fantasy football league, infact the only reason Rio is there is so I can pick up points for clean sheets, but that's not good now... come on Ruud get a goal mate!

EDIT:

On the plus side, Ruud earned me 3 fantasy league points, on the minus he now pulled the game level.

EDIT EDIT:

Dammit, it started out so promising! Now in the 84th looks like its will be 2-1 to Man Yoo. The Gunners better thrash Middlesbrough tomorrow, otherwise I will be very bitter.

Mad_Gecko 08-23-2003 02:42 PM

almostaugust

I have no hopes for that striker. He was Mr Longballs (Turnip) best hope!.

I hope O'Leary leave him and Dublin in the 1st division. Oh yeah I think Vassell belongs there too. Unfortunately we didn't get Kevin! Argh! I'll be lucky to see em get 6-10 :).

Porkchop 08-24-2003 03:01 AM

Let us see how Arsenal get on today against Boro? Mendiata could be a great signing for them.
Also yesterday i see Sunderland won thats maybe because Flo was leaving. Couple of friends who go to sunderland matches say he is or was total crap? Toon lost also . Oh well there is next week.
Thats the North East covered right there.

djflish 08-24-2003 09:33 AM

WOOHOO!

Arsenal 4-0 to the good!! Top of the table already, and therre for the rest of the season!! (Touch wood!)

Spartak 08-24-2003 02:19 PM

Oh yes!

Wiltord and Henry carving it up as usual.

Marius1 08-24-2003 02:55 PM

Division One is where its at. Balls to the Prem.

Bluuuuueeeeebirds!

almostaugust 08-25-2003 04:13 AM

Porkchop,

I highly rate Flo. They should have held onto him i reckon.

djflish 08-26-2003 01:45 PM

flo did a good job at chelsea, but its been all down hill from there!
he's getting on a bit now.

Ian Wright, now that is the best striker any team could possibly have! what a legend

Marius1 08-26-2003 03:06 PM

Chelsea didn't realise and respect what they had in Flo.
Had he been english they would have treated him like Micheal Owen (scored more goals than Owen in the same world cup). As he was foreign he had to take what match scraps he could get.

Had they developed him properly he would have been a football god.

He had a deceptive stride that made him look ungainly and slow when in reality he was zooming past and putting it in the net.
Unfortunately it was that false impression, that unfortunate illusion that fooled management as well as defenders.

Yeah i agree. They used to call him Flonaldo for a while there. He was a very deceptive player.

sakvee 08-26-2003 11:13 PM

Liverpool better bloddy win against Tottenham today. !^$#^!$&%

It wasn't until this season the Chelsea and England really could be equated. For a while all they had were a few U21s and one or two others that did not get regular first-team England play. Last game Chelsea had four or five men in the squad.

So if Flo were English I don't think that would have made a significant English. As Chelsea dabbled heavily in the international market they were quite use to fielding players of other nationalities.

almostaugust 08-27-2003 07:11 AM

New Era fellas. Chelsea have signed Crespo! He sybolises the type of european player youd never think would play in the Premier league. Its come a long way since the days of Peter Beardsly and his testicles (anyone got a link to that pic).

MikeyChalupa 08-27-2003 07:36 AM

Leeds.

Only because their jerseys say "Strongbow" which I have found in my European travels to be the nectar of the gods.

I know nothing else about the team.

It was a period in history where someone had said you can't win anything with youngsters and was proven wrong. However it was english youngsters that were media flavour of the month.

Chelsea didn't really go for youngsters but if it had possessed an English youngster who scored more goals than Owen in the same world cup they would have milked it for the attendance boost the same as Owen's club did.

Crespo isn't european, he's argentinian. Or did u mean the type of player who plays in europe?

I didnt actually think chelsea needed any new strikers, hasselbaink and gudjohnsen would have done the job with the better supply from the new midfield, and carlton cole is a future england striker. he's quality striker and charlton have done well to get him on loan

almostaugust 08-27-2003 09:40 PM

Yeah i know he's argie, but he is the quintessential european style of player who would usually scorn the EPL. TV rights to the EPL at the moment are huge, im not surprised its starting to draw the players that it is.

darkure 08-28-2003 03:49 AM

Spain and Italy's TV rights are all messed up. In Italy last year they delayed the season two weeks, I think, becuase they did not have a TV contract ironed out. I believe they face a similar situation this year because there are one or two new satelite stations that want in on the Serie A gig. Sppain is split in it TV rights. The eight biggest clubs want to sign their own deals while the rest of the top division and all of the second want one deal that covers all teams.

djflish 08-28-2003 10:13 AM

i don't see why the football season is run around TV schedules, it should be the other way round!

sakvee 08-28-2003 05:04 PM

Liverpool better win their first game this weekend. %!@@^%

djflish 08-29-2003 09:14 AM

i can see them losing that game. i think moyes has done great things with everton, and at goodison they will be a tough team to beat.

from what i've seen of liverpool this season, they should think more about escaping relegation!

Arc101 08-29-2003 09:47 AM

Forest supporter here stuck in Div 1. The things I am going to enjoy about the premier are watching Leeds go down, wondering how long it takes Wolves to let in 100 goals, and watching Ferguson complain, whine and cry as Man Utd win nothing this season.

HeAtHeN 08-29-2003 11:24 AM

Flo was toilet.... no other way to describe him. Another great purchase by Reid....

...as for Sunderland... we're now 2-2 and playing some great football (acording to my uncle, I live in Canada now:) )

Porkchop 08-30-2003 11:37 AM

almostaugust.
Only seeing flo from tv he did not seem up to the job. Mates who go to the matches are pleased he is away.
Regarding Crespo he should be well suited to the premier, very good buy who knows who else will come into the premiership if they can attract that type of player.
Also want to say Newcastle the other night few in the team dont deserve champions league football. Shearer really needs a top notch partner. imo.

almostaugust 09-01-2003 03:43 AM

Man U lost. Hooray. Childish i know.

Spartak 09-01-2003 04:06 AM

More like "much needed downer".

Their arrogance was even worse than Arsenal's this time last season.

djflish 09-01-2003 11:26 AM

i really fancy arsenal for the title this season. the players realise they were too arrogant last season and fucked it up. now they want to work their socks off to win the title again
they showed that at man city

sakvee 09-01-2003 05:20 PM

Good to see Liverpool get a win and give Everton a thumping at Goodison. Arsenal are looking pretty damn strong again this season.

fatboss 09-02-2003 04:05 AM

Liverpool - Everton.

The division in class was bigger than Duncan Fergusons Right Elbow!!!!!!!

A VERY satisfying result for the Reds. Nice to see Kewell get his first so early in the season. Who would have thought they could play that well with Heskey, Murphy and Riise on the bench? Hats off to Biscan, he's suddenly realised he's a footballer and not a headless chicken!

Come On The Red Men!

dimbulb 09-02-2003 04:50 PM

Yes, very glad that Liverpool has finally gotten their first win. Too bad they don't show any EPL over in the US, at least not on regular cable.

Pity about the long international break though. might rob them of their momentum, or touch wood, lead to injuries..

almostaugust 09-02-2003 04:53 PM

Yeah im glad Liverpool won, im not sure if Houllier's heart could have taken much more.
Arsenal do look good indeed.

almostaugust 09-04-2003 04:35 AM

Hey there is a site called uglyfootballers.com. Luke Chadwick features heavily here.

djflish 09-08-2003 09:11 AM

i know this is an premier league thread, but i thought this would be the best place to mention how spectacularly shit England were against Macedonia.

What the fuck is going on?!! Eriksson just can't get the best from the great players he has at his disposal

almostaugust 09-09-2003 06:28 AM

Yeah, maybe Erickson has had his day. The poms are funny though, unless thier team is scoring bycycle kicks in the world cup final they are pretty much permanently disgruntled with the way thier squad is performing.
I do like the songs they bring out every now and then though.... remeber that 'Footballs Coming Home' jingle, that was a cracker.

djflish 09-19-2003 11:13 AM

Sunday 21st September 2003 - The Big One

Manchester United Vs. Arsenal

C'mon the Gunners!!!

Mad_Gecko 09-19-2003 02:08 PM

Hmmm...

We do have the best post war run of wins going on now, so "us poms" aren't too displeased. However, we do know "soccer" and the team isn't performing very well. How often have I heard "teams that win when they aren't playing well are championship material."

Need some changes b4 we're able to win Champ's though.

Also nice to see Crouch going to the first division where he belongs :).

Most. Boring. Game. Ever. 21/09/03 Middlesborough v Everton... I'll be asleep after that.

almostaugust 09-20-2003 10:02 PM

Yeah, Go Arsenal for tonight! Wolves got cained again last night.

djflish 09-21-2003 11:42 AM

Did anybody see the United - Arsenal match?

It really kicked off in the last 20mins!
Vieira sent off and Van Nistelrooy missing a penalty in the 93 minute!!

I can't wait to hear what the managers say in the papers tomorrow!

almostaugust 09-21-2003 01:22 PM

Arsen has accused Ruud Van Nistleroy of being a cheat. Naturally Ferguson has stood up for his man, and aimed some shots of his own back at the Arsenal camp.
Damn, i cant wait for the highlights.

Spartak 09-21-2003 07:45 PM

Van Nistelrooy takes more dives than a WWII U-Boat.

As does the entire Man U squad.

I think this game proves once again that the FA wants more of the money that Man U is earning with its popularity overseas, and thus skewing the officiating in Man U's favour.

... what? You can't rule it out ;)

almostaugust 09-22-2003 04:51 PM

Yeah, i just saw the highlights.
Youve gotta feel for Arsenal. They do get hammered by the refs. Van Nistleroy is very annoying. I thought it was heeps funny how everyone was celebrating in his face. As soon as Roy Keane stepped in though people started to back of. Nobody wants to die.

castex 09-25-2003 09:31 AM

You're right, Keane's a nasty piece of work. Writing in his autobiography that the career-ending tackle he performed on Haaland was entirely intentional is about as low as a footballer can go, in my opinion.
I see the same, almost rabid ferocity in his manager, all too clearly. Both seem just such nasty people, and they epitomise the rotten spirit shown by 'United' at their worst.
At their best, they're stunning. I love that devil may care, headlong flinging of bodies goalwards; the ball spraying left and right on the deck at a dizzying pace.

Newcastle used to do that, too. They...We will again soon. 5-0 against whomever it was last night is the beginning of the end of every pumped-up, playground prima-donna in the premiership, be they dressed in red, red and white, or blue.

Porkchop 09-26-2003 01:57 PM

Not tonight they didnt. Hard lines for them though they played well. 2 silly mistakes cost us the game really.

djflish 09-29-2003 11:40 AM

Newcastle always under-achieve at the beginning of the season, but have been up the top come the end of the season.
If they sorted out they're seasons starts they might actually be contenders

Yeah Newcastle have some gun players. When Solano is on his game he is awesome, and that Bellamy kid is also impressive.

jwoody 09-30-2003 07:34 AM

My insider at Newcastle has just given me some very interesting news.

I expect the shit to hit the fan some day soon. I mean, if you go back to hotel rooms with a bunch of footballers; what do you expect, a game of monopoly?

Mad_Gecko 09-30-2003 09:17 AM

jwoody

Yep, they be most likely candidates, they aren't likely to drive back up north after an evening kick off at Arsenal are they?

Wonder if Dirty Dyer was involved? It'll be enough to give Ol' Bobby a heart attack if it's true.

Although everyone was giving me grief cause Villa played Chelsea at the weekend and I got scared it might be them. However when they quoted "1 full international and many household names" I knew it wasn't Villa. We haven't got a regular international nor any household names.

Spartak 09-30-2003 05:41 PM

Dirty dirty Newcastle.

Should make some interesting reading in my Law lectures though, we already looked at Flitcroft this year, I expect this to be 300 times better.

jwoody 10-01-2003 12:35 AM

My mate works for a national red-top tabloid but they can't name names yet for obvious reasons.

Spartak 10-01-2003 03:03 AM

Not Cole!!

Dammit, stupid kid throwing his future away for some jailbait!

jwoody 10-01-2003 04:01 AM

Don't get too worked up just yet, Spartak they're only rumours at this stage. We'll probably read all about it on Sunday, the girl involved has already sold her story to The Sun.

Mad_Gecko 10-01-2003 05:48 AM

Although Bobby handing in his resignation is pretty circumstantial...even if it wasn't accepted.

I'll wait till the tabloids pull it apart, but for pure speculation NUFC has my vote.

siogo 10-01-2003 11:25 AM

Picked up a 'SUN' hack in my cab today, Yes its 'Toon' players

Fair enough, but if it was anyone half decent from Arsenal, I'd be pretty pissed off.

A pretty extreme lapse in judgement on the players' behalf if the allegations are true.

almostaugust 10-01-2003 09:51 PM

I havent nothing about this yet.... except from you guys of course.

almostaugust 10-04-2003 02:36 AM

Hey, whats happened with those dirty Newcastle boys???

Arc101 10-04-2003 02:53 AM

Allegedly (does saying allegedly before passing on gossip stop you from getting sued ?) some Newcastle players, dyer, bellamy, bowyer, bernard, robert have been accused of rape.
Apparently the deed happened either Friday or Saturday night, and the girl reported it Saturday night. since then they've been taking swabs and checking cctv etc.

jwoody 10-06-2003 12:56 AM

This was doing the rounds at the match this Saturday.

To the tune of 'The Blaydon Races' -

Oh, me lads,
You should've seen them gannin'

Havin' a go,
All The Toon gang bangin'
All the lads and one lass there,

We divvent need The Champions League,
