Pro Football Pick Em

There is already a Fantasy Football league here on tfp: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-...tball-2k8.html

I prefer Pic Em instead and I don't think we did one last year. So I got off my ass and made one.

Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Pro Football Pickem

The ID# is 7038 and the password is tfp

Jetée 08-04-2008 09:04 PM

I am still very much green when it comes to Fantasy Football; only started participating in a league last year, missed the draft, first five weeks, then subseqent playoffs. it was still fun as hell those eight weeks I remembered to play. This seems more my speed. Perhaps those will improve saavy acumen towards the fantasy championship I'll need.

Thanks, you Psycho.

I can't seem to get past the stage in which i choose my name and notifications; mmm...

Psycho Dad 08-05-2008 04:03 AM

Once you are signed up, you should be able to go to Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Pro Football Pickem - and access everything. If you are signed up as Feather In Air, it looks like you have made your picks now. What you have picked cn be changed up to 5 minutes before the start of the first game.

Jetée 08-05-2008 04:20 AM

Indeed. I had to switch my browser to Firefox in order to continue registering. And I also thought to go with gut instinct for the innaugural 1st week; up until better judgment seeks to unseat it.
Nonetheless...

My Team: Feather in Air

grumpyolddude 08-05-2008 09:10 AM

I'm in PD. I am going with "Random Choices" this time 'round.

Thanks for setting this up. If we can coerce a few more of the folks to sign up, we can have some fun.
Didn't we used to have about 30 involved in the game when we did it within the forum?

Psycho Dad 08-05-2008 09:35 AM

I don't remember how many we had last time we did it. But I'm of the more the merrier mindset. I hope we can get it to max out the 50 users. tonight I'll search for one of the old threads and see if I can tell who all used to play and maybe send out some PMs.

Mitzkrieg 08-05-2008 06:33 PM

i'm game. didn't do anything last year, and i miss it.

Psycho Dad 08-05-2008 07:30 PM

Four in, 36 to go.

crewsor 08-06-2008 05:16 PM

I'm in. I set it up a couple of years but interest dwindled until last year it was only a couple of guys, so I never bothered this year....SCREAMING EAGLES, by the way.

Apparently I need to go back to school and give my math grade back.

Jetée 08-06-2008 06:17 PM

Why? You mistook 40 for 50?

Psycho Dad 08-06-2008 07:58 PM

Yeah. I could just say I was lowering my hopes to get 40 instead.

MontanaXVI 08-07-2008 05:53 AM

I have done pick'em before, just not on the TFP, so I am in.

Psycho Dad 08-07-2008 12:06 PM

OK, seven in. I think we are going to have a good turnout this year.

Jetée 08-18-2008 02:35 AM

Still at seven. So, a bump to raise awareness.

Mister Coaster 08-19-2008 10:55 AM

Never done a Pick-em league, but I'll give it a shot.

I'm In!

Psycho Dad 08-19-2008 02:26 PM

We're picking up steam. Week one is still way off so I have faith we'll get a good group.

indebut 08-19-2008 06:03 PM

I'll sign up and hope not to embarrass myself too much

DDDDave 08-21-2008 04:39 PM

I'm in.

Banzai Buc. Maybe, like my team, I can make it to the playoffs this year.

Psycho Dad 08-22-2008 03:53 AM

Cool. 11 in now.

Psycho Dad 09-01-2008 11:38 AM

Just a few days until kickoff

Keep in mind, if you plan on joining or haven't made your picks, the first game is Thursday night and picks need made by 5:55 pm Eastern so don't wait until Sunday.

Mister Coaster 09-04-2008 11:51 AM

Good luck, all!

Psycho Dad 09-05-2008 12:10 AM

Sigh... I worked late tonight and forgot to change a couple of picks.

Oh well... We're off!

dksuddeth 09-07-2008 11:36 PM

good week so far. would the bears/colts game qualify as everyones shocker?

that's one of them. carolina/san diego was a bit more of a shocker to me though. Merriman is out for season now. guess playin' with 2 torn ligaments didn't work out after all, heh.

man, so many injuries after week one, and serious ones at that. a lot of game changers in there.

grumpyolddude 09-10-2008 07:47 PM

Lot's of games went from no-brainers to head scratchers and coin flips. Of course, my record for week 1 proves I'm pretty much a no-brainer myself.

Psycho Dad 09-12-2008 03:41 AM

Man I got off to a lousy start. Not only did I bomb, but I didn't get to watch any games save for Thursday night's opener. And I missed half of that. This weekend doesn't look too promising either for watching football.

Jetée 09-12-2008 04:15 PM

Here I am reporting, making you feel better of your week, with my concluding records of the past matches, and my abysmal showing of such must be wracking your minds in warped thoughts, and you could be thinking that I had to have actually had to work against all great knowledge of the fundamentals of football in general and my better instincts to only post THREE out of SIXTEEN correct winners.

I can bounce back from this though, right? :surprised:

I want to get at least 12/16 this week to rebound, so here's to my chances.

(What happened to all the other potential competitors, can they still join?)

Psycho Dad 09-13-2008 08:16 AM

I don't know if more competitors can join or not. I hope they can and more join. It isn't too late to catch up.

Jetée 09-18-2008 02:55 PM

It seems I don't know the difference between picking winners and picking hopefuls. :/

Psycho Dad 09-19-2008 03:18 AM

There's still plenty of time to catch up. I was looking at my dismal results but realized I'm only 8 games out.

Jetée 10-01-2008 08:21 PM

Still in 11th place... avg. of 7 correct picks a week for me a quarter of the season in.

Psycho Dad 10-02-2008 04:28 AM

I'm in the cellar with you. I kind of like that though. The climb back up is interesting. Assuming we can climb back up that is.

It is hard to believe that most teams have played a quarter of their games. I've been so busy that I can count the games I've seen this season on one hand. The games I've watched have been goon ones though. Cowboys and Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins, Chiefs and Broncos.

BTW, that Chiefs pick... I'd like to have that one back. I almost went with the gut and picked the Chiefs at Arrowhead but couldn't see how the Chiefs defense was going to hold up against the Broncos. Then when they had two rookies starting on the corners I went with Denver. Who would have thought it.

Amaras 10-04-2008 03:50 PM

Whoever was in last, well, now you're not, Here I come! Hopefully I can finish second to last. I just happen to be hamstrung by two "have-to" picks each week. Can you guess at least one of them?

Jetée 10-04-2008 06:43 PM

Fins and Niners?

Amaras 10-05-2008 01:12 PM

Fins, yup. That's my personal fave. Washington's my better half's.

Jetée 10-05-2008 04:02 PM

Mm, similar to mine: Washington, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, & San Diego are my four favorite teams. My two favorite team songs are that of the 'Skins and the Chargers, though.

I've been thinking of adding two more, but I'm in no rush.

On another note: I've noted when in the Norhern Virginia road and major highways, I, for whatever reason or another, spot more "Florida Orange" license than I do either Maryland or District plates. It makes me think that Virgina and Florida share some kind of secret wormhole so that residents of either state commute freely between the two. It's quite bizarre.

Psycho Dad 10-06-2008 04:30 AM

What the hell was going on when I picked Seattle to upset NY?

Jetée 10-06-2008 05:12 AM

The same delusion I had picking Detroit to pull one over the Bears? The law of averages seems to be immune to the four worst teams. Houston coulda held on, but they let go of the reins on the Colts.

The way it goes... like for whatever reason, I knew Miami would beat both NE and SD, but I picked the favorites to win. It's kooky how the brain works on a coin toss.

Mister Coaster 10-06-2008 09:01 AM

Sheesh, I had 2 weeks at ~.500 and I fell way down the rankings...

But I have a good bounce-back week going, 10 points so far. I forgot to put in the tie-breakers, though. Oops.

Jetée 10-14-2008 07:22 PM

How goes the foray into football prognosticating, friends?

dksuddeth 11-07-2008 01:30 PM

I keep losing about 4 - 5 games each week and can't catch up to the #1 spot.

grumpyolddude 11-07-2008 05:30 PM

I could send everyone my choices each week. Pick the opposite, you'll do very well.

Amaras 11-07-2008 05:55 PM

I'm the guy who entered 6 weeks in: RickyWilliamsLawyer. I'm now in second to last. Didn't hurt that the person ahead of me dropped out weeks ago. I calculated that if I had bet on these games, legally, I would be eating Kraft Dinner for about 6 months.

Jetée 11-09-2008 02:08 PM

I'm not even sure who picked my games this week; they make no sense at all. :orly:

I have only been moving up in the standings because others seem to be dropping off. I am instilling a new method to this madness of picking winners by utilizing a lucky coin. I can't fail.

Mister Coaster 11-10-2008 08:38 AM

I have a good week and then I'll have a bad week. Nobody is really running away with it, so there is a pretty big bunch that are in the hunt. I'll admit I don't do much research, but it's still fun.

Picking all favorites is not a bad strategy, but if you can nail the upsets, you're golden.

Missing 4-5 a week is still pretty good. It's those ~.500 weeks that will drop you down.

Amaras 11-10-2008 08:58 AM

I forgot to pick this week! OOOHHNOOO!

I only picked 6 winners this week. :(

Amaras 11-13-2008 07:02 PM

I've got the Jets over the Pats tonight, so far, it looks good!

Psycho Dad 11-14-2008 05:00 AM

I half thought about changing my pick last night to the Jets but thought it was going to be so close it could go either way. Early in the game I regretted not changing.

MontanaXVI 11-24-2008 10:56 PM

Hanging in there at #1 still, we'll see how long this lasts. Probably in my best interest to just keep my mouth shut since I am a very bad pick'em player.

Psycho Dad 11-25-2008 05:29 AM

Man I bombed this week. Even trying to pick a few upsets didn't work as the actual upsets were games I didn't imagine upsetting.

Jetée 11-25-2008 07:44 AM

It would seem that a "bad" week for you is my overall ceiling in any given week; I've only topped 8 points twice this season, and never have I topped 10 points.

I try to pick upsets as well, but those are just wishful thinking losses on my part, and for the betterment of my favorites most times. The problem is that upset picks should be wagered for more points, perhaps double if picked correctly, if a team is favored 70-80% or more than the opposition. That'd perhaps make a pick 'em league more competitive, but I don't know if any others have thought of this stipluation.

Mister Coaster 11-25-2008 07:22 PM

There is another style of pickems where you only actually pick 4 games for the week. From what a friend has told me about it, here's how it works (I think).

The games are your choice, and you wager points. The game you are most sure about, you wager 400, then 300, 200 & 100. If you win all 4, that's a perfect 1000 for the week, any that you miss, you lose 110% of the wager. So you could lose 440 if you miss your 400 game, and so on down the line.

Not sure if Yahoo has that style, I haven't looked. Might be worth looking into for next season.

Psycho Dad 11-26-2008 10:36 AM

There is an option for confidence points on the Yahoo pick 'em. Maybe next year we can set up a few different leagues with different options. It would be interesting to see the effect of confidence points or the spread on the outcomes.

Mister Coaster 12-01-2008 11:03 AM

Argh, so far my best for this week will be 9 points. I'm still near the top, but I'm slipping...

dksuddeth 12-01-2008 12:08 PM

what a rotten week of picks on my part.

Mister Coaster 12-12-2008 07:45 AM

Shit! I missed making my picks this week. I logged on all of 2 minutes too late last night, and Yahoo doesn't allow me to pick the rest of the games after the Thursday night cutoff. I guess I'll have the goose-egg this week which will kill off ANY chance of winning for me. ***sigh***

If anyone knows how to pick after Thursday, I'm all ears.

MontanaXVI 12-12-2008 08:28 AM

The league owner can set the picks to be done up until 5 minutes before kickoff

That would allow you to pick the Sunday games if you miss Thursday still, not sure why it wasn't set up like this, I haven't missed any weeks thankfully.

dksuddeth 12-12-2008 10:53 AM

its looking like alot of people have stopped picking.

I didn't see that option. I'm on my iPhone now, but I'll change it when I get to my pc.

EDIT: Ok, picks can be made up to five minutes before each game.

Mister Coaster 12-13-2008 12:01 PM

Thanks! Now I can lose fair and square!

MontanaXVI 12-15-2008 07:08 AM

Damn all you guys, I am DONE with this thread!!

I got a lousy 5!!! going into MNF this week....A FLIPPING 5!!! That's what I get for coming in here and saying anything

Psycho Dad 12-15-2008 05:18 PM

I've been afraid to look at mine. I can set it to throw out the week with the lowest score if anyone wants.

DDDDave 12-16-2008 05:29 AM

Now, now Dad, let's not get carried away. :) I am still hanging in there. One more good week and I am going to catch you Montana.

I so wanted to pick MIN on Sunday but I didn't. I have my own rule that I never change my picks at the last minute. It always comes back to bite me.

I am in another Pick'em pool that pays $60. for each weekly win. I lost this week on MNF total points. :(

I am not going to tempt the pick'em gods by predicting anything except that I will finish the season.

BB

Mister Coaster 12-16-2008 10:48 AM

There were a lot of upsets this past week, just about everyone went near or below .500

dksuddeth 12-16-2008 12:25 PM

i finally picked up some points on the leaders, finally

dksuddeth 12-22-2008 11:40 AM

holy crap, what a lousy week for picks. how many upsets screwed us?

Mister Coaster 12-22-2008 07:15 PM

No kidding, my 8 (possibly 9 tonight, coulda been 10 if I actually had remembered to pick the Thurs game) is pretty good. Looks like my chances of winning are just about over. Fun season, I'd like to try again with something different, maybe playing the point spread?

dksuddeth 12-23-2008 07:24 AM

well, this last week should be interesting. Since I'm a bears fan, the options for them making the playoffs should provide me with a whole weekend of frustration and anxiety. Especially because it seems like the Bears are playing like they want to lose.

MontanaXVI 01-05-2009 05:44 AM

I won the "contest" by 1 point.

Fun fun, will have to check in next year and see about defending my title.

Psycho Dad 01-05-2009 04:15 PM

Next year we'll have to get everyone's input on all the options. I didn't realize that 5 minutes before each game option existed. I suspect that when some missed out when Thursday games started people started dropping out.
