Misogyny on Ice

Damn!

During the ice dancing competition tonight, every couple of minutes, some woman was being dropped onto the ice by her partner. Most of the time he'd just kinda drop her, but a couple of times that wasn't good enough, and he'd fall on top of her.

Hell, the ice was so messed up, one of the women tripped on her own toe pick during a parallel move.

There was less carnage in Final Destination 3.

Gilda

Note: I realize it was a series of accidents and the guys weren't trying to hurt their partners. It's just the nature of the sport that the guys lift the girls, and the guys occasionally drop the girls. The title is meant to be tongue in cheeck.

Plummie 02-19-2006 10:11 PM

Those men need to practice up!

Borla 02-20-2006 07:01 AM

I saw a couple minutes of the ice dancing......parts of two routines, and both women ended up being dumped on the ice. The first one looked like she smacked her hip HARD. It looked very painful. :(

highthief 02-20-2006 07:26 AM

The girls probably need to lose a few pounds - makes it easier to carry them and toss 'em around.

(waits for the PC police)

ShaniFaye 02-20-2006 07:28 AM

If you watched the replays of the first one....the one that couldnt continue....he didnt drop her.....she let go of him and fell

Or the guys need to work out more. :p

I am not an expert by any means, but I'd guess it's more a matter of proper technique and form than someone having an extra cheeseburger they shouldn't have. ;)

ratbastid 02-20-2006 08:11 AM

Mostly it looked to me like the women stumbled and pulled their partners down.

The one really bad fall, it looked like they didn't really get into their lift properly, and were sort of hanging on for dear life. Not sure exactly who I'd pin that on. They wheeled that poor girl out on a stretcher, did you see?

Poppinjay 02-20-2006 08:13 AM

I like how the Italian couple just glared at each other at the end.

The woman was hot, in a kind of Tonya Harding way.

maleficent 02-20-2006 08:14 AM

I didn't think they did a lot of lifting and tossing in ice dancing... just way too much spandex...

had i known there'd be carnage.. crap it might actually be worth watching...

I saw her partner carrying her around after, but I didn't watch long enough to see the stretcher. I know they said she was scheduled to skate again today, but it was unknown if she'd be able to. If she does, she is a trooper. I'm guessing her whole hip and right buttcheek is black and purple today. :o

In that particular fall I'd agree it looked like they never were in a good position, and she finally couldn't hang on any longer and her hands slipped off.

astrahl 02-20-2006 08:26 AM

I thought the outfits were awful - when are they just gonna have the women go naked? The guys get the lovely pantsuit and the women get these thong, glitter-titty covers. WTF?
And since I'm on a rant, what the hell is DANCING doing in olympic sport? Sure, it is athletic, but I'd hardly call it a worthy olympic pursuit.
Oh, and what about the American twit - snowboarder who hotdogged herself out of the gold? I cringe to think that THAT attitude is what most of the world thinks of as typically American.
Oy!

/end rant

I still love watching the Olympics. Winter is the best.

Poppinjay 02-20-2006 10:59 AM

You mean like this outfit?
http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/msnbc/Co...d_5p.widec.jpg

This was the moment right before they ripped each other's throats out.

Charlatan 02-20-2006 11:35 AM

To those who didn't like the outfits... This is ice dancing we are talking about here. It's just ball room dancing on ice.

Have you seen what ballroom dancers wear?

Exactly.

maleficent 02-20-2006 11:41 AM

the days of torvill and dean are over... :( it went from a classy exhibition style event to ------ this....

kudos to them for being able to skate in those twinkie outfits.. that's the skill...

ShaniFaye 02-20-2006 11:43 AM

did anyone see the bjork dress look alike?

even dick button said it was the biggest powder puff dress he'd ever seen

Charlatan 02-20-2006 11:53 AM

Dick Button? That's funny... almost tragic.

uh yes, he's one of the commentators, he's the one that keeps complaining nobody knows how to do a sit spin anymore

ratbastid 02-20-2006 12:10 PM

... And if I was in Turin, I'd be hunting him down and strangling him. The only commentator more annoying than Dick Button is that goober they've got screaming about bobsled races.

Oh! Dey skidded! Right dere at the top! Oh, dat'll cost 'em a couple hunnerts right dere!

ShaniFaye 02-20-2006 12:16 PM

but hes right!!!!

the sit spins look like shit in this competition, I only saw two couples in the pairs skating that even attempted to get low enuff

Craven Morehead 02-20-2006 01:12 PM

I think ice dancing is lame, kind of like a figure skating competition for couples not quite good enough to do the real thing. HOWEVER, Tanith Belbin is hot.

I'm sure ratings for the ice dancing finals will go up now that everyone will be tuning in to see couples crash to the ice.

Gilda 02-20-2006 02:25 PM

Just to be clear, I realize that it wasn't all the guys fault, that the the spills were a team thing for the most part. The title and tone of the OP were meant as a parody of reading ulterior motives into innocent coincidences, in this case, because I'm a feminist, from a radical feminist perspective. I mostly just wanted to comment on how many spills there were in ice dancing, and wanted a more interesting way of doing that than just saying, "A lot of girls took spills last night." I apparently don't do parody well.

Mal: I loved Torvil and Dean! I remember being mesmerized by their grace and elegance as a little girl. If I were athletic, other than the running thing, which doesn't really count, I'd want to be an ice dancer.

 No explaining to do. I understood you fine. :)

She looks like a jar of jellybeans vomited on her chest. Who designs these things?

Your parody was good. Don't worry about it.

/me ends pep talk

Carry on.

Lucifer 02-21-2006 06:20 AM

The Canadian duo, it was her that lost her grip on him, not the other way around, but he did say he was spinning a little too fast.
But if we are talking about the biggest dorks at this games it has to go to the Dutch bobsled coach, who after his team rolled their sled on the 4th corner and slid the rest of the way (at 90 km/h) to the finish line on their heads, smiled and waved at the camera!

kutulu 02-21-2006 07:55 AM

I could care less how Tanith's voice sounds. She's so hot that her voice could be the sound of fingernails on a chalk board and it wouldn't distract me. Now, about her partner...

remember all those AOL CDs that got sent out - -AOL decided to sponsor the event and unload a bunch of old AOL 3.0 cd's

In the case of this pair, I believe Fusar-Poli designed it herself, which is kind of why she gives me that Tonya Harding vibe.

I was happy, however, to see that they had made up after their second routine. I can't stand tension on the ice. And their spill made it possible for the Americans to win the commemorative CDs.

barenakedladies 02-21-2006 10:13 AM

They need to have a channel of just the falls.... that would boost ratings.

SirLance 02-21-2006 12:39 PM

I've decided to create a new event for the winter olympics. I call it "figure shooting."

What you do is have trained marksmen shoot at figure skaters. Points are for hits only, and are based on the resemblence of the figure skater's outfit to vomit.

Nimetic 02-22-2006 02:59 PM

IMHO - it's a bit more than ballroom dancing.

When a woman is thrown into the air and does three spins before landing on ice-skates, well that is physically more difficult than normal dancing.

But on the clothing side... it does seem to resemble competition ballroom dancing somewhat I admit. At least based on what I've seen off the TV.

I think that's more the pairs figure skating than ice dancing, is it not? Two different events.

Nimetic 02-22-2006 03:00 PM

Ohh. Is ice dancing different to figure skating... I think I may have been incorrect...

Is this figure skating without the tougher bits?

Nimetic 02-22-2006 03:09 PM

Oh... I needed that explanation thanks. I'd assumed you meant it as an accusation.

Leaving aside the falls, which were fairly unbearable to watch in replay, I'd agree that the costumes are seriously stuffed from the point of view of reasonableness vs er, sales value. (Is marketability a word?).

On the positive side... the female skiers and sledders don't have to strip down yet.

Nimetic 02-22-2006 03:17 PM

The oddest bit is the move where they join together, woman facing the guy.

Then the woman lifts one leg in the air above her head (and guy holds it) and they spin with her exposed crotch facing outwards.

In the style of satirist (Aussie) sports commentators Roy and HG, I'd be inclined to call that maneuver the "any takers". Pretty odd stuff.
