The "groupie" mentality.

As my wife gets a bit older and starts hitting her sexual peak, I've noticed that she's turned into quite the groupie type. She thinks that pretty much every lead singer out there is hot. Especially the Maroon 5 guy right now.

In our discussions about who's hot and who's not, she's admitted that if you take these guys out of context and just put them as your average joe on the street, they aren't so hot anymore. Guys like Fred Durst and Kurt Kobain come to mind. If you take them out of the context of being lead singers, girls aren't flinging their bras at them anymore.

You can extrapolate this to how women are drawn to older politicians, sports figures, people on TV, radio jockeys, etc. Some really are good looking, but there are plenty of others (Dennis Rodman?) who, when you take them out of context, really aren't that hot.

So I've been asking myself this question: What is it about guys on stage that really get women going?

I'm thinking it's an "alpha male" kind of thing buried deep in the psychies of women.

Can anyone out there come up with any other theories?

Pretty simple, and basically what you already said. From an evolutionary point of view it's all about spreading your genes. Women want 2 things: security and resources for her offspring. Someone who is the leader of a group (ie alpha male) had those things.

Isn't that part of the "alpha male" thing though?

Some women may view money as the "security" their offspring need. Others may view "security" as the tough, rowdy, bad boy.

yeah, i considered that. but, i think there are a lot of instances where someone could at once have a lot of money and not be considered an "alpha male." it all depends on what attributes you want to ascribe to that term i suppose.

A stage itself is awesome...put someone on it, and more often than not, they become awesome as well.

Why, though? I really have no idea...some friends of mine were in a band a few years back. I wasn't particularly attracted to any of them, but the first time I saw them play live, suddenly, they were ALL hot.

A sexy voice gets me going anytime. You can be as ugly as sin, but if you have a beautiful voice, I will follow you home.

I follow same thought as Untitled... if you can sing, or play an instrument, you might as well just take my clothes off now. It's a bit of a turn on hearing someone with a particular talent like that.


To me, guys are guys, ugly attractive whatever. If you have that 'special something' that puts you in a slightly different category than another guy, then that's what i get attracted to. This can be anything from having a musical talent, athletic ability, ability to listen better than the average guy.... pretty much anything but not quite everything. Does this make sense? Probably not

Actually, it makes complete sense, and it leads into another question I was going to ask: what makes someone cute, beautiful, pretty, etc?

Observation: when you look at art through the dark ages, you see that the female ideal was more heavy set than it is today. Why is that?

Warning: Another one of my theories to follow.

Back in the Dark Ages, everyone was skinny. Between the plague, disease, pestilence, wars, and a general lack of food, everyone was pretty skinny. The woman who "had some meat on her bones", to try and put it lightly, was the one who was seen as attractive.

I'm sure part of it was that she was healthy enough to bear children. But if that were the only reason, then why do I find Jennifer Aniston so freaking hot? She has far from "child bearing hips".

How about this: people are attracted to something a little different. Something that stands out.

Back in the day, it was someone healthy. Nowadays with junk food, fast food, soda, etc, it's the skinny one who stands out visually.

For you, that may be an artistic, athletic, or interpersonal talent.

For me, it's Australian accents. It started with Olivia Newton John and hasn't stopped yet.

I guess it's the old adage: variety is the spice of life. People like variety.

You make a good point Dewman. Has any one of you guys ever thought more of a girl because she acted different from the other girls you knew? Didn't you find this attractive?

Aside from being different, i think it's also competition. Girls like the guys who every one likes, or the ones that they cannot get, and thus want the lead singer.

In addition to competition, think about money, fame, attention, "alpha male status..."
But we've already covered all this stuff

Very good post, I've always wondered that too. I've even said when someone who is very ordinary but famous is being oggled by a female friend i usually pipe up and say "I bet if it was (insert name of ugly celebrity here) the janitor" you wouldn't be getting all hot and bothered.

Bingo. Go to the ritzy parts of town on Sunday for brunch and look at the couples. You'll see younger good looking woman with ugly crusty dried up old dude fairly regularly.
