What day of the week to ask somebody out?

There's sort of an unwritten rule that you don't ask someone out after, say, midday Thursday, because it implies that this person is coming in as second banana after your "real" plans have fallen through. There are some people that don't even answer their home phones on Friday and Saturday because they're not interested in being a "Plan B friend." Of course, when you're young, the casual thing is par for the course.

So with that out of the way, I had a question: There's this girl at work that I dig and I thought I'd ask her out for a cup of coffee--something casual since we've never gone out anywhere. I'm getting receptive signals, so I thought I'd give it a go. The thing is, I went by her desk late this afternoon to ask her, but apparently she'd already gone home for the day.

Now, since it's a casual thing, would it seem sketchy of me to ask her on a Friday if she wants to hang out on Saturday or Sunday? Maybe I'm being to cautious, I don't know. I suppose I could wait another week to hang out with her, but there's that window of interest that fades if you don't catch it. It could give me the opportunity to develop things, but I also don't want to overwater the plants, so to speak. Any suggestions?

Dont ask too early and always have a backup day to hang out if she says she is busy.

Being too early or being rejected twice in a row is usually bad signals.

Now as for the specific day? As long as you have confidence and your honest then any day is fine.

BE BRAVE!

Why don't you just ask her if she would like to have coffee or dinner or whatever sometime. Let her choose the day.

My personal philosophy is forget the rules...ask out whoever you want, whenever you want. But I'm going to be sitting at home this weekend, so what do I know?

Is your phone broken? :) Guys like getting asked out by women...especially pretty ones. ;)

If I was inviting a woman to go to a gallery or exhibit opening, then I would usually do so two to three weeks in advance of the event. I am married now, so Valerie usually knows when I do, when we need to attend something. The only difference is, now she has my tux laid out for me on the day of the event. I think that she just doesn't trust me to remember that the white tie is only for "production" events, opera, ballet, etc., black tie for everything else. Jeez...screw up once...

Conversely, some of the best "dates" that I've ever had were spur of the moment, and off the cuff. Nothing wrong with that. Nope, nothing wrong with that at all.

Ive never heard of that you arent supposed to ask girls out on Thursday... I'd just ask her whenever if I was you man.

If you're at work, ask her to lunch, or even to get a bit to eat right after work. It shouldn't matter the day, well one would think it wouldn't. But make it a dutch kind of thing, unless she totally shoots you the right vibe.

Yeah, I say that unless its an event that necessitates planning, no one should care about what time of the week, or day, someone else is asking them out at. This world would be very scary indeed if everyone in it let time dictate their options.

Somehow...I just can't see not being asked out as being a problem for you. ;)

I asked her earilier today if she wanted to out for a cup o' joe sometime, and she practically jumped on it, so I wasn't hallucinating those signals :D. W00t!

My problem was figuring out exactly how I should phrase it, since we both work at the same place and I've actually never made a pass at a co-worker before. But I made an exception, because we work in separate areas of the building (and I think she's a cutie).

Thanks for your input, guys :).

For the first date when you ask her does not matter, as long as she is in a good moon, if she's in a bad mood it doesnt matter if Prince William asks her out she wont look forward to it even if she says yes.

Never start the first date on a weekend, even if you usually sit at home and play video games at least make it seem like you are socially active.

For the first date I use one of two things, if you can tell she is active take her to a pool hall on wed/thursday night, of course let her win but most of all make it fun. Or if you barely know her (from class or something) ask to go get some coffee on a tues/wed afternoon. This allows yall to get to know each other, and allows you to see if yall actually click before you spend any real money (movie tickets/etc).

This is the guideline I use, has never failed me. Most of all keep the conversation light, look her in the eyes while yall talk, and make her laugh.

The biggest mistake you can make is NOT asking. You may get dissed a few times but sooner or later even a SHREK-A-LIKE like me gets laid. Go for it!

My rule is that wednesday is the cut off for saturday night dates. I prefer to be asked two or three days in advance the rest of the time, but during the week, anything over 24 hours in advance is fine...if I'm feeling accomodating.

absorbentishe 03-03-2004 02:09 PM

Well, how'd it go? Need to fill in some details. Have you gone out again besides the coffee? What has happened????
