condoms during oral sex

My ex girlfriend is a teacher and got caught up watching one of those sex ed videos with her kids. She came home demanding that we use condoms during oral sex until we both had a blood test. She even went as far as to suggest wrapping her pelvis in plastic wrap before oral sex. I didnt have much beef with that part....

In theory I understand this, but I dont know anyone who does it.

What can you catch through oral sex (besides herpes) that cant be cleared up with a shot? and does anyone use condoms, dams or plastic during oral sex?

kel 12-17-2003 12:36 PM

Plastic wrap? LOL
Sorry...

Sho Nuff 12-17-2003 12:37 PM

Thats what I said!!

Averett 12-17-2003 12:37 PM

I never have, but you're right, it should be done.

World's King 12-17-2003 01:13 PM

Why would you wanna taste that?

It's bad enough that my dick smells like a Rubbermaid container when I take it off.

raeanna74 12-17-2003 01:31 PM

Well you can get flavored condoms. It is always good to get regular testing done if you have more than one sex partner.

You can get HIV through oral sex too - all HIV needs is contact with blood. There is a tiny bit of blood in cum and if there is any tearing or sore anywhere that could allow the virus through. Then of course there's Herpes like you mentioned and genital warts (HPV). Gonorrhea bacteria can grow in the mouth and throat as well.

IF neither of you have been with another partber in 6 months (HIV takes about 6 months to show up at times) then if you get tested you can be pretty sure that there's nothing that's been missed. Getting tested is no big deal. If you want it to be annonymous there are usually clinics around where you can get that done fairly inexpensively.

Personally I think she's going a little overboard. If neither of you have noticed any symptoms and if you've been together any length of time I wouldn't worry. Plastic wrap is a little too much. Condoms are never too much IMHO. Once you get checked though then you shouldn't have to worry about anything other than birth control.

SAM821 12-17-2003 01:34 PM

condom.... well hopefully its one of those flavored ones if you are gonna do it....

Truthfully its safer (though ive never volunteered to put one on during oral....) but If you guys already were going down on each other, isnt it too late to think about condoms now? i mean, you guys already have been exposed to each other... what difference does it make now?

i could be wrong, but it was just a thought....

enough 12-17-2003 02:15 PM

SAM821, you could have unprotected sex many times with someone who is HIV + and not get infected, or you could get it the first time. So his gf's not so wacky really... More unprotected sex equals more chances to be not just exposed but infected with an STD. I do believe HIV transmission odds are quite a bit lower with oral than penetration, but they still exist. I admit I am not jazzed about wearing a rain coat to get a hummer, but at least your gf is wanting to keep both of you healthy.

SAM821 12-17-2003 02:25 PM

well... i didnt know that... thats for the educational lesson... I thought that once your dick penetrates you get whatever your mate has....

I know that with oral things are a bit different...

well... ignorance is BAD... (as you can see).... just get tested man... that works best

I gotta disagree here. Many std's can remain symptom-free even while causing permanent damage to the body. Get checked. period.

Holo 12-17-2003 07:00 PM

Only time I'll wear a rubber is if I'm getting vaginal or anal. I'd rather not get head at all then wear a rubber, seriously. Of course Ive been monogamous for 6.5 years.

You are right. You should get checked if either of you have had ANYONE else. It doesn't hurt to get checked and it's just being responsible with your body and with your partners body.

I didn't mean to discount the risk. I was just saying that you shouldn't get too WORRIED about some of the STD's that do show symptoms. You should always get checked if there's any question - it's just being responsible.

passthru 12-17-2003 07:12 PM

Why the fuck would you put plastic wrap around your pelvis, even if you have all kinds of STD's, when you're giving ORAL? The magical STD demons will float through the air and infect your vaginal area?

You live with your ex and still have sex with her? Or was that a typo?

In any event, you can get anything by unprotected oral that you can get by vaginal, though THEY SAY the risk is a BIT smaller. That doesn't mean you go unprotected. And unless some blood comes out of your mouth, AIDS is the only thing you can't get by a person giving oral to a female (the chances are scientifically nill- if I can find the article I recently read this in, I'll post a link).

The actual chance of getting an HIV from fellatio is approximately 0.18% regaredless of whether ejaculation occurs.

The risk of transmission when the man is giving oral is negligible unless either partner has open wounds on the involved surfaces.

If, during a one-year sexual relationship with an HIV-infected person, no condoms are used, the risk is approxiamtely 7%

[info from CDC-funded studies]

Just for reference, the risk of infection in the case of a needleprick with a needle contaminated with HIV-positive blood is 0.5%

I love the fact you are a nurse in training. All medical questions are now yours.

I think he means she would have plastic wrap around her pelvis when he is going down on his girlfriend. Sort of like a makeshift dental dam, I suppose.

macro 12-18-2003 05:12 AM

Getting checked does sound like the way to go, but I'd ask her if she'd mind using the plastic wrap anyway. Sounds kinda fun :)

Mettler 12-18-2003 05:51 AM

Why use plastic wrap ? Part of the fun is the whole flesh against flesh thing ^_^

emphant 12-18-2003 07:25 AM

I think she is paranoid. I'd rather not get head than get head with a condom. I suppose she kinda does have a point tho, so just go get tested

Sho Nuff 12-18-2003 07:49 AM

This is something that happened in the past. We broke up a month after this incident (I swear it wasnt cause and effect)

We got HIV tests together when we first started dating and then 6 months after just to be sure before we stopped using condoms and I recommend anyone who isnt to do the same.

I appreciate the actual STD data. What else is out there that can be passed through oral?

gr8-4pla 12-20-2003 04:16 PM

If you need to use condoms or plastic wrap during oral, you shouldn't be doing oral with that person. Plan and simple. That's just wrong.

tdoc 12-21-2003 08:38 PM

My wife gets tmj from oral

phaedrus 12-23-2003 12:25 AM

There is nothing wrong with being safe. Thank being said, don't use plastic wrap it doesn't work well. Instead use dental dams (latex sheets made for protection while going down on a woman.)

Charlatan 12-23-2003 05:57 AM

not to rock the boat but maybe her paranoia about passing or recieving STDs had more to do with who else she'd been with...

That said, Lady is right. Get tested. Period.

Starfish 12-23-2003 10:25 AM

I've done it with and without a condom and I think that it is too much hassle to do it with a condom. Your g/f NEEDS to chill. From a girls point of view I find that giving oral is better without a condom. (even the flavored ones)

dragon2fire 12-23-2003 01:50 PM

get the blood test

best idea

SVT01Cobra 12-23-2003 01:59 PM

I know you can get Herpes, and syphillis too I think.

Here, read this.

Facts & answers

emphant 12-23-2003 11:09 PM

If I was you, I'd just go get the tests, forget about head, and just have regular sex until I got my results.

santafe5000 12-25-2003 04:55 PM

Even refraining from sex for the period of time you are waiting for the test results wouldn't be out of the question. If it were a matter of life or death, couldn't you do without sex for a couple of days. Better safe than sorry.
You said ex girlfriend, so i was wondering if you were still just seeing each other exlusively. That would have a lot to do with whether there was the chance of STD's.

monkeydriven 12-26-2003 08:51 AM

Always wondered about this...why would a woman want that latex rubber taste in their mouth? Isn't that worse than cum?

legolas 12-26-2003 03:11 PM

I don't want to and she has expressed that she won't. We were both virgins when we met though and didn't do too much of anything else with anyone else.

la petite moi 12-26-2003 04:09 PM

Oral sex with condoms...? Sounds...almost ridiculous. Get tested, and then there will be proof to show her.

Er, I don't use condoms for anal or oral sex. Just vaginal.

shannon 12-26-2003 05:01 PM

we've never used condoms for oral, but my SO and i have only been with one another in any sort of sexual situation, so it wasn't really a concern. when i was in high school i remember joking with one of my friends about giving head with a condom on and choking on the rubber. i guess it'd never really happen, but it always struck me as a funny posibility. i think it would be not as fun to have a latex covered dick in my mouth, but if there was some reason to be concerned i might.

intecel 12-28-2003 06:52 PM

Oh my god... I'd drop a girl soooo fast if she told me I had to use plastic wrap on her lol
