Can you hear your neighbors having sex?

BrickUnderground’s Noisy Sexy Neighbor Survey: The results are in!!

Feel free to let loose in bed this Valentine's Day if you can bear the awkward morning-after elevator ride: Our loud neighbor-sex survey found that although two-thirds of apartment dwellers overheard a neighbor having sex and more than half wished they hadn't, almost none complained.

However, you may still want to muzzle your moans if you find it creepy that nearly a fifth of those we surveyed become aroused by their neighbors' mating sounds.

Read on for the highlights:
1. You are probably not as quiet as you think
Of 407 people we surveyed, 68 percent reported hearing a neighbor having sex. The specific sounds overheard were generically reminiscent of Halloween: Thumping (60%), moaning (56%), screaming (28%) and “other” (23%).

2. One neighbor’s audio porn is another one's nuisance
Just how did our survey-takers feel about these erotic soundtracks?
Twenty-six percent claimed indifference, while others reported feeling aroused (16%), annoyed (19%), jealous (19%), disgusted (11%) or anxious (9%).
(We digress for a tragiocomic survey moment, relayed by one of our interns-on-the-street:
Intern: “How does hearing your neighbors in bed make you feel?”
Woman: “Jealous.”
Man, concerned: “Really?”
Intern: “Have your neighbors ever complained about you having loud sex?”
Woman, blunt and dejected: “NO.”
“It was sad,” relays our eye-witness intern. “I can almost guarantee that when they went home that night, they let go of all inhibitions and rocked the house. Or broke up.”)
Even though more than half of our respondents owned up to a negative reaction, 89 percent said they had never complained to their neighbor, the management or a staff member. (See The agony of the ecstasy: 4 tips for overcoming loud neighbor sex.)
“I would be afraid they might complain about me,” elaborated a twentysomething woman on the Lower East Side.

3. Nighttime is not necessarily the right time
Most people reported overhearing their neighbors’ conjugal moments in the evening (29%) or the middle of the night (46%).
A third would prefer that loud fornicators do their thing in the afternoon; others voted for the evening (20%) and the middle of the night (35%)--except for one enthusiastic respondent who noted that she would like her neighbors to have sex all the time.
Note to early risers: Almost no one wants to hear you in the morning (12%).

4. What goes around comes around
While most people (88%) said they’d never been on the receiving end of a loud-sex complaint, about a quarter admitted that they try to keep quiet, while a third said it depended on their blood alcohol content.
"I'm normally not loud, but if I'm drinking, it's not until the next morning that I'm actually terrified about what my neighbors heard," one Lower East Side woman told us.
Do you believe as in the Avenue Q song?

Skogafoss isn't very loud, not in person, not when we're out, and definitely not in the bedroom. She's very much concerned about the noises she makes and that's not limited to sex. I'm the same way.

I don't think we've ever been very loud.

One time when I was a teen, my parents were downstairs and my g/f and I were in my bedroom above them. My father came upstairs to find out what all the ruckus was. He didn't barge in on us at all.

Ourcrazymodern? 02-12-2010 01:53 PM

Yes, I can. I've never complained about it - I wouldn't know how to broach the subject even if it bothered me...
It kind of bothers me that our next-door neighbor has found it a turn-on, but that's none of my business, either.

Vigilante 02-13-2010 01:17 AM

I did at our old apartment, but not here. I have a house and I can't hear shit outside.

Lady Bear Cub 02-13-2010 07:55 AM

When I lived in my apartment I could hear the woman who lived upstairs crying out as her husband railed her. It was always at like 6 am. Way too fucking early.

It's never has happened. Not in the dorms or apartments. :(

Willravel 02-13-2010 12:34 PM

It happened every night back in college. After a certain point, we didn't even apologize to each other, just high-fives. Now? Only occasionally. A newlywed couple moved in a few months back and every once in a while I guess you can kind of hear something.

Fortunately, my bedroom is pretty well insulated and keeps noise in. I LOVE screamers.

I asked Father Christmas for a screamer, or at least a moaner.

He brought me a sweater... :(

Yes. I had a fortunate encounter with an asian girl a few times. She was noisy and she seemed to enjoy that as much as I did.

Completely off topic, but I thought you had a house.

I remember laying in bed in an apartment in Boston, early summer, windows open. I counted three different couples before I had to wake up my boyfriend to join in. Sort of like one of those yawn chain reactions. LOL! I've had a few hotel sessions that I *know* people heard. Mostly they just turned up the TV. I also dated this one guy who made the most amazing noises when he came. It was fabulous, but I wouldn't have wanted to be his upstairs neighbor.

Salem 02-13-2010 04:19 PM

I've heard many a person having sex. Not at my current place, sadly. But at other places you bet. I love it. I'll stand outside their door and join in. Total voyeur.

I do. If the newlyweds and I lived in an apartment building, things would undoubtedly be a lot louder. As it is now, we overall enjoy a good amount of privacy. I can only remember one occasion where I heard something, about two weeks ago.

It hasn't even happened in hotel rooms. I've stayed in hundreds of those. What am I doing wrong?

World's King 02-13-2010 10:11 PM

No but the cunt next to me tuns her TV or stereo up all the way at 4am.

I'm gonna slit her throat in her sleep... but she seems to never sleep.

laconic1 02-13-2010 11:11 PM

The people in the apartment above me have a really creaky bed so I hear quite a bit of vigorous action for about 2 minutes at a time. If they didn't have such a loud bed I would never hear it. It's annoying but tolerable since the guy never lasts very long.

Daniel_ 02-14-2010 04:17 AM

I'm lucky on this score. Although I live in a terraced street, my neighbours on one side have their bedroom in the loft conversion, and on the other side have it in the room I use as a living room (ground floor), so no risk of embarrassing each other at all.

Charlatan 02-14-2010 05:02 PM

I have experienced it in the past but currently, no. The construction codes here dictate that everything is made of bricks and concrete. The only noises that come through are dragged furniture or dropped marbles.

Xerxys 02-14-2010 08:36 PM

Never had this problem.

spindles 02-14-2010 09:08 PM

I spent a saturday night camping in my backyard a few months ago. Yep, I heard them then. Otherwise, no.

remy1492 02-15-2010 02:39 AM

had roomates who were loud at 1am every night when her BF got off work. the rest of the apartment complex thought it was ME and my GF because all windows were usually open in SoCal to let cool air in. Old people gave my dirty looks when I walked by but in reality it was my petite anime-girl looking filipino roomate who only got smiles and waves from the older folks as she passed by.

levite 02-15-2010 06:07 PM

OMG, I have had so many of these neighbors.... Mostly they were kind of hot, and I don't mind admitting that they often provoked me to "join in," whether I had a girl with me or not.

Sometimes not so much, though. I did have one neighbor who, God help me, I swear was having loud sex with her dog (no boyfriend, just her voice moaning, and saying "Faster, boy! Good boy, faster!" and the sound of dog whining and claws scrabbling on hardwood flooring...you do the math). Yikes.

And on the more amusing side of the spectrum, I also had one set of neighbors I used to hear all the time, and each time sounded the same:
Mixed voices: *panting and moaning*
Her: Oh, God, yes, fuck me faster!
Him: Oh, God, yes, I'm gonna come!
Her: No, I'm so close!
Him: I don't want to come yet! No! Aaargh (sounds of him coming)!

Charlatan 02-15-2010 06:42 PM

Back in University we had neighbours in our backyard that were quite loud. One time we recorded them and then played them back to themselves full volume.

Never had the problem again.

curiousbear 02-16-2010 08:40 AM

nope
I wouldn't mind at all - but if there are kids or old people at my place at that time then it will be totally a different story !!!

vicdaman 02-16-2010 10:22 AM

my girlfriend lives with a female roommate. and when we have sex there we try to keep it quiet when she is there, but i know she can still hear us. thing is once after we had sex my girlfriend went out to go to the bathroom and she caught her roommate masturbating. Now i realize it wasn't just a coincidence after all.

i can also name a time when we heard her roommate having sex and we got pretty horny.

besides that i don't think the neighbors above or next to her room can hear us, and we don't hear them because the guy next to us is never home. and the people above us is a deaf guy and his son. we just hear a tv blasting from them at 3am. it's been quieter so i'm guessing they've been getting a lot of complaints.

canuckguy 02-16-2010 11:16 AM

My first apartment after university my neighbour heard me and my then girlfriend. They put a note under my door telling me to close my windows...I was so embarrassed!

Live in a house now and nobody can hear a thing...I hope!

I think that is very sweet/kind way to express such a concern!

Redlemon 02-22-2010 12:02 PM

In our condos, almost no sound comes through the walls. Except for our previous neighbors. We'd be in bed, then the screaming would start. That's how we knew it was Thursday. Seriously, Thursdays were the only nights they would fuck. Or at least fuck loud enough for us to hear. I wish it was a turn-on for my wife.

Plan9 02-22-2010 12:51 PM

No, but they can hear me. And I'm not apologizing.

Word for word agree!
