Free rent in exchange for sex?
 

So, I'm watching Fox News, and they are debating something interesting. Is posting ads on Craigslist for single attractive females to live rent free in exchange for sex, solicitation of prostitution... But, this happens in real life anyway. We label the girls gold-diggers, but see nothing wrong with what the guys are doing.

So, if you're a poor college girl, would you rather be in a friends with benefits relationship with the poor college guy, or with a guy that will give you free stuff in let you live in a nice part of town. Men do give gifts to girls all of the time in the hopes of getting some. So, is this wrong? Or do these guys just don't know how to get girls any other ways?

I think this kind of relationship is more honest than most people would find comfortable.

I'm not sure if that fits the legal definition of prostitution, but I think prostitution should be legalized, so I guess it doesn't matter much. I don't think this is "wrong", as long as both parties enter into this agreement consentually.

If I was a poor college girl, and had any looks at all, I'd be stripping and making retarded amounts of money. Then, no longer being a poor college girl, I'd buy my own place. :) I don't think I'd go so far as to rent out my vagina.

Ads like these have been in the village voice for years... Generally the guy is older, married, and looking for some brainless twit to make him feel better about himself... It's not right... I'm sure the twit wouldbe so proud to tell her family that she's putting out twice a month in exchange for her education...

There's actually a prominant reality-porn site based on this very idea. The notion of "friends with benefits", much less "tenant with benefits" seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

I thought about that as well, but what happens if a girl only wants female roommates, is that discriminatory towards guys?

About the porn site, I bet it is fake. They aren't really staying there, they just get their $1,000 for the scene and stay at their own place. Now, I wouldn't be surprised if these guys on craigslist got the idea from that site.

Well really its the guys who are being taken advantage of.

If you don't mind having sex with people you are not really attracted too its a pretty good deal. If say an appartment is 1000 a month, and you have to put out twice a month for it, even if its a full hour each time thats 500 dollars an hour. If the women find enjoyment in it as well (and I'd imagine some would) they are making 500 an hour for something they like to do.

If this is a crime, then it is surely a victimless crime. As long as both parties are in agreement, and it is not harming anyone else, then what's the problem?

I don't have a problem with this, but the choice isn't that different.

The problem with this is the power imbalance. When a woman is a gold-digger, she's more in control than someone who can't afford rent elsewhere. Obv, this isn't always the case, but the problem is still there.

Also, I wonder what happens if the tenant wants to date someone. How exclusive are these contracts, usually?

i'm not so sure they're not that different. sex for rent is essentially using the barter system. and they enter into the agreement from the beginning stating that she's trading sex for his trading a living space.

if you told a woman she had to have sex with you to keep her job, that's not bartering... that's essentially extortion because you already have your agreement (work/time for money) and now you're changing it.

now, if you were to make it a condition of being hired (rather than keeping the job), they would be pretty damn similar.

Not in this case, actually. If you own (or rent or lease) a property and are looking for a roommate, you can be as discriminatory as you want, as they are technically your "guest". If you own a house and are looking to rent or lease it to someone else, or sell it outright, you cannot be discriminatory (though it's hard to pin this on individuals). Also, you cannot discriminate based on any protected aspect in regards to approval of loans required to get a house.

However, putting an ad in the paper stating "Looking for white, 20-something, blonde girl for "happy ending" roommate fun" may seem "discriminatory" but is not against the law.

Also, I don't think this is legally prostitution, where an exchange of legal tender must occur. Remember, too, that porn movies are "legal prostitution" so there is a great deal of flexibility in the laws regarding such things.

Remember, as is in my jurisdiction (this may vary greatly):

Prostitution is not against the law. Soliciting for the purposes of prostitution is. Legal tender does not have to be involved, and it is shown that "Due Consideration" is all that is required. If I give you drugs, or stolen goods, or in this case free rent, I have not broken the law (well, not the prostitution law, anyway). If I offer those things to youin exchange for sex, that is against the law. These are huge technicalities in criminal law.

Therefore, in this circumstance, if you had a Prosecutor that had guts they could throw this person in jail for advertising this living accomodation. This person is basically soliciting EVERYBODY for the purposes of prostitution.
