You are under the misunderstanding that the military is an egalitarian organization. It is not. It is a totalitarian, hierarchical organization dedicated to killing the enemy as efficiently as possible so that the rest of the country can be egalitarian and wonderful.

What is the problem, then, with women in the unit, so long as they do not have sex with their compatriots?

sorry, not to be stereotypical, but yeah, i'd totally say that mixing of genders in a unit is a story for trouble. Namely, most guys i've seen going through basic come out with testosterone levels through the roof, so any form of sexual tension is going to surface quickly.

doesn't have much to do with this discussion, but ignoring the consquences of sexual tension is not a good idea.
