When the cops are outgunned, what are innocent civilians supposed to do, besides cower under their beds?

Didn't they outlaw guns a few years ago?

A MACHINE-GUN maniac sprayed a police van with bullets early today, almost killing one officer.

Cops in the van made a frantic 999 call to their base after coming under attack.

One shot flew within inches of an officer’s head.

The terrifying attack began at 12.10am as the van was on patrol in Leytonstone High Street, East London.

It is believed the bullets may have been fired from another vehicle. A car, which was involved in a collision, was then abandoned at the scene.

Takeaway restaurant manager Haiber Hassan, 40, said he heard gunfire. Haiber, who works in Pizza Go Go, said: “We heard shooting and when we went outside we saw the police van. It sounded like gunshots like you hear in the movies.”

Office worker Pat Kelleher, 49, said: “We hear shots around here all the time but this was like a machine-gun. Then we heard police shouting.”

It is not known how many officers were inside the vehicle or how many suspected gunmen there were.

A police source said: “At this stage it’s proving difficult to figure out what the exact chain of events were.”

Early today the ambushed police van sat empty in the street with blue lights still flashing on its roof.

It was parked outside a barber’s shop with its front passenger door and sliding side door still wide open.

A small white Renault hatchback was positioned directly in front of the police vehicle.

The scene was taped off and several uniform officers stood guard while detectives scoured the road for clues.

Half a dozen other police vehicles were pulled up at the far end of the street while officers gathered together to begin their investigation.

The terrifying incident happened just two days after government figures revealed a big surge in violent crime.

Statistics in a Home Office report showed that violent crime was up 14 per cent between July and September last year compared with the same period in 2002.

And cases of murder and serious wounding had risen 18 per cent.

Gee, who would have thought that not allowing cops to have guns would be a bad idea? Even cops need to call 911 (or 999) every once in awhile.
