Jean Chrétien Quote

I hope that someone in Tilted Politics can help me out here.
I'm looking for an audio link of Jean Chrétien saying:
Quote:

"The proof is the proof and when you have a good proof it is proven."
It's gotta be out there, but I can't seem to find it.

james t kirk 01-24-2004 06:57 AM

Actually, it was

"A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven."

Classic.

I will miss Jean in some ways.

The other classic one i remember was when he was doing a press conference in Washington and some reporter asked him about the problem with "drugs" crossing the Canadian / US boarder and ole Jean replied, "Well, that is free trade"

There was this silence from the crowd and Clinton looked at him, then leaned over and whispered into his ear.

Cretien exclaimed, "Drugs!", I thought you said "Trucks"

Clinton was practically in tears.

splck 01-24-2004 08:40 AM

It's a sad day when I wake up and see that idiots name on the TFP.
Good riddance Jean.
I won't miss him one little bit.

Scipio 01-24-2004 10:25 AM

I never got to see the guy, but it seems like it might have been enjoyable. I mean, if Canada elected the guy, he's gotta be great, right?

Change that to Central Canada elected him. He was never liked out West. What Ontario saw in that guy I'll never know.

numist 01-26-2004 08:36 AM

I remember Jean from when I lived in Toronto and I followed Canadian politics until he stepped down.

I loved that guy. He's a figurehead, so as a politician he has no real power, even though hes at the top. This meant he could afford to have a sense of humor and play inside his role a bit. I loved every bit of it, and Ill miss him.

You must be thinking of the queen as the figurehead. The PM is all powerfull in Canada. What he says goes for the most part.

Just because s/he's the last one to sign something, doesn't mean it's what s/he came up with.

...and it's not like he was elected only once. True, though, that Central Canada usually decides the fate of the rest of the country in terms of PM selection.

silent_jay 01-26-2004 12:24 PM

I will miss Jean for the way he stood up to the Americans and would not commit Canadian soldiers to the war in Iraq, and for the great man that he was.

As for Mr. Martin I'm curious to see how much he will sell Canada out to make relations with the US better. I hope he doesn't agree to do anything that would jeprodize ther Liberals staying in power.

Goodbye Mr. Chretien, you will be missed.

bigbad 01-27-2004 04:02 AM

I was indifferent to him until his last couple of years in power, when I absolutely loved him. He developed a sense of humour once he was reelected to his last term. Which by the way he only did to show his critics that he could still get back in.

Yeah, well the Alliance Party uniformly won out West so who cares what they think!

What did we see in Chretien? We saw the guy who was the leader of the Liberal party and thought "Shit, there's no better party to vote for?" Remember, in Canada, we vote for members of parliament, and it just so happens that the leader of the party that has most MP's affiliated with them (if any!) becomes Prime Minister...

A silly system but what are you going to do?

Perhaps the people out West?

I realize Ont is the center of the universe (got lots of family there), but at least the West isn't full of sheep.;)

silent_jay 01-28-2004 06:16 PM

How can ANYONE possibly vote for the Reform/ Alliance / whatever they are now party.

At least i could understand the PC party (I even like Joe Clarke), but the reform????

They are bunch of narrow minded whack jobs who remind me of southern conservatives in the USA. Their stand on abortion and homosexuality just will never fly with most people in the east.

Who was that guy in the reform who recently wanted to outlaw homosexuality?? He was the shadow minister for "family values" Yet there is no cabinet position for "family values". The reformers have an agenda that 90% of Torontonians would never buy into.

silent_jay 01-29-2004 06:57 AM

Yeah in my town in Ontario we are represented by an Alliance member who last year in the House of Commons told NDP MP Svend Robinson to "ask his boyfriend" when he was answering a question during question period. Is this the type of idiocy that we want leading our country.

At least Chretien had balls enough to stand up for Canada, he genuinely loved this great nation of ours.

And let's not forget he chocked the shit out of that protestor, let's see Stephen Harper pull that off.

Vive le Canada!!

bigbad 01-31-2004 02:05 AM

I voted for the Alliance, I will not again after the shit they gave Chretien about not supporting the war. I haven't decided who to support at the moment, none of the choices really leap out as obvious to me :\

Politics in Canada are getting a little more interesting

Conservative leader hopeful, Belinda Stronach:

Well, I guess no body has a good quality audio link of Jeans quote then, eh?

Oh well, carry on high-jacking my thread

skier 02-02-2004 01:55 PM

Belinda Stronach is a tool. She's a little daddy's girl with no real platform. Right now i'm hating the way the media is critising her eligibility because of her figure because it hides the larger flaws in her campaign.

HugAPug 02-02-2004 02:35 PM

djp

I found this
The quality isn't the best though. :(

About Belinda, she's pro - gay marriage and pro-choice. Two things I can't see going over well with most Conservatives.

That's the same quality that I have found as well. I guess a better quality clip just isn't out there - or I'm not looking in the right places. Thanks for the searching help HaP.

You know what's really funny about the whole Chretien "proof is a proof" bit?

He turned out to be right all along.

All of Bush's reasons for firing into Iraq seem to be a lot of crap right now. There never were any "weapons of mass destruction"

All along Chretien said he would support sending troops into Iraq if the UN gave a mandate to do so. He was consistant on that.

Turns out he wasn't so stupid after all.

Numist -

In a parliamentary system the Prime Minister is anything but a figurehead. The PM names the Cabinet, controls the party, and in a majority government, this means the PM controls the Legislature. Our senate cannot really block any legislation, only delay it, so there are no checks or balances to the PM's power.

The best we can hope for is a benevolent dictatorship.

Sticky 02-03-2004 10:22 AM

skier, I was not saying that Belinda was going to be any good, I was just saying that politics in Canada are getting more interesting.

You have to admit that Stronach is more interesting than Kim Cambell ever was.
