christian presidents
I'm doing a paper on Faith based initiative and need to know for a fact: were all the Presidents of the US Christian and/or Catholic? Can someone post a good source or link to prove this? Thanks.

Here's an interesting link:
http://www.adherents.com/adh_presidents.html It has a breakdown of the denomination of each U.S. President. It also indicates that Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson had "no specific denomination" at the time of their Presidency. The rest are some branch of Christianity. Only one president is counted as "Catholic": JFK. |
Empu has already provided a fantastic source but It'd be also worth noting that when JFK was elected, a lot of people really didn't like the idea of a Catholic president.
It'd be good to distinguish between the different Protestant denominations too. Here's an article on Presidents who didn't always follow the teachings of their specific denomination: http://charleston.net/stories/020903/rel_09prez.shtml |
Thanks guys, that really helped me.

Going further on what Macheath said. Many people didn't like a catholic president because, first there was a fair bit of prejudice against the religion, and secondly because they thought the president would owe his allegiance to the pope and not work in the best interest of the nation and the american people as much as he should.

You may wish to investigate the Jefferson Bible. An interesting path to judeo/christian thought without the begats and incest and war and regicide and etc....
