Downing Street 'mystified' by Bill Clinton claim

Downing Street says it is "mystified" by reports that Tony Blair discussed his health problems several years ago with Bill Clinton.

Mr Blair's spokesman insisted that his irregular heart beat, which caused him to be hospitalised briefly last week, had never happened before.

But ex-US President Clinton was quoted in the Sunday Mirror as saying: "I've known about this for a long time. He told me about it quite a few years ago.

"As soon as I heard what happened, I called to check he was OK. We had a talk and he sounded in good shape."

Mr Blair's spokesman said: "What we have said has been based on the opinion of those who have been responsible for the Prime Minister's medical care. We are slightly mystified by this story as this is the first time this has happened.

"The Prime Minister does not have, and has never had, a heart condition and he has never had this complaint before. It would have needed treatment.

"What we have said has been based on the clinical advice of doctors. This has never happened before and there is no reason why this should re-occur.

"Were the Prime Minister to have had anything like this before, it would have required treatment. All we can go on is what the clinicians told us and, as they have said, this has not happened before and there is no reason why it should recur."

Asked if the Prime Minister had had the conversations with President Clinton, the spokesman replied: "I have not been present at every single conversation the Prime Minister has had with President Clinton," he said.

This isn't necessarily a anti-Clinton post. Did Blair hide a heart condition from his people/public but tell Bill? Is Bill just trying to look like a close personal friend of Blair?

It's not earth shattering but it would be interesting to see who people trust more.

Food Eater Lad 10-27-2003 03:03 PM

I really dont know.

The_Dude 10-27-2003 04:22 PM

Clinton lied about his affair with lewinsky.

Blair lied about the wmd's in iraq.

blair made the bigger lie; thus, my trust goes to ol' bill.

Liquor Dealer 10-27-2003 04:42 PM

Blair made his decisions based on "intelligence".

I would not believe anything Clinton said if he were in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean claiming to be drowning.

The_Dude 10-27-2003 04:56 PM

ok, let's look @ who has more to lose then.

Clinton - he's not in office and pretty much done politically.

Blair - Still PM and he told a US president about his health concerns before he told his countrymen/women & other British dignitaries?

Tman144 10-27-2003 07:14 PM

It makes sense for Blair's people to say that this never occured before, even if it did. You never let on when a leader is in poor health, it makes him look less strong.

Clinton on the other hand has nothing to gain by telling people about this conversation he had. It sounds like he made a comment without thinking that Blair's people were going to say they never knew about this problem.

About the Lewinsky thing, if you were having an affair, would you tell everybody? No, you lie until its completly proven that your caught.

Blair has motive to lie. Billy boy doesn't.

For me, that provides all I need to decide.

eple 10-30-2003 04:16 AM

Why is there not a "none of the above" option?

captain 10-30-2003 06:20 AM

Bill Clinton lied. His past history shows he will lie even when the truth would be better. When confronted with a lie he changes his story until it is believed. I think it is pathological. He can't help it.

mb99usa 10-30-2003 06:37 AM

May not have been the aim but there is some deep seated Clinton hatred coming out in here.

Personally I liked the guy. I find Blair to much of a GW buddy which makes him even more suspect.

My vote goes to Bubba.

You should be aware that 99.999999% of all politicians lie. That percentage actually increases dramatically the higher the political office you hold.

Why would clinton lie about this? Where there is no motive there is generally no crime.

Dibbler 10-30-2003 02:15 PM

Bill just wants to be in the spotlight at all time! Even if he did know and that Blair has had heart problems before, Bill should have kept his big mouth shut. There is no reason to even comment on it except to get his name in the press and to stir up trouble for a Bush ally.

Sunrise 11-01-2003 12:38 AM

I prefer to not believe either. All politicians are full of it.

Macheath 11-01-2003 12:58 AM

Hey, I've SEEN this episode of the West Wing.

james t kirk 11-01-2003 02:47 PM

Politicians in power do not want to appear as weak, ever.

FDR hid his paralysis, Regan hid his medical problems, Bush, etc. etc. The public needs to perceive their leaders to be of sound mind (except in W Bush's case) and sound body.

Blair doesn't want to be perceived as physically weak cause it could cost him the throne.

Simple as that.

Clinton is most likely telling the truth, but he of all people should understand discretion and kept his gate shut.

XenuHubbard 11-02-2003 10:48 PM

The health of a leader in a country that has WMD's is definetely a matter for Intelligence.

I've heard it before, as well. It's not something that Clinton made up by himself. That Blaire has a heart condition has been in the news before.

Clinton has no reason to lie. Blaire has a reason to lie. His chances to get re-elected would not increase if people doubted his health.

captain 11-03-2003 07:01 AM

Bill Clinton has plenty of reason to lie--It keeps him on the stage and he really likes being on the stage. He does not want anyone even his wife usurping his rightful place on the world's political stage.

I doubt it. How often has clinton been in the news since he left office? Once every few months maybe? That hardly seems characteristic of someone who "does not want anyone, even his wife, usurping his rightful place on the world's political stage"

Conclamo Ludus 11-03-2003 10:14 AM

I think they're both full of it. Its happened before to Blair, and Clinton never knew about it. :)
